Sun Fang returned to the hospital in the middle of the day. There was no use in coming earlier; he wouldn’t be able to see Mianmian before his surgery anyway. He wasn’t entirely certain why, but he wasn’t going to get into an argument with Mianmian now. So he took his time in the morning, eating a leisurely meal and watching the garden from the patio.
Around noon, he took a fancy car to the hospital, Ivy driving him.
When he arrived, he stepped gracefully out of the car in one smooth flowing motion, his high heels clicking on the ground. He’d decided to dress elegantly in a lovely dark purple pantsuit and pair it with long, black heels. This was a special occasion, and it deserved a special outfit. Sun Fang was very proud of it, having picked it up on one of his shopping sprees just for this.
The doors opened automatically when they came close enough and Sun Fang led the way to Mianmian’s room. He wasn’t there, of course, but there was no better place to wait. Settling down on the couch, he pulled his legs up onto it next to him and occupied the whole thing.
Ivy walked through the large room, cleaning up as it went. There were a lot of windows facing a garden down there. Sunlight streamed in through them, and the soft blues of the walls was calming. Altogether, it was a lovely room for a baby to start its life in.
About an hour after he’d arrived, knocks resounded on the door. Sun Fang didn’t look up, busy with the game he was playing. Ivy went over to it and pulled it open, stepping back so the guests could enter.
A gasp. ”Brother!”
Sun Fang looked up, furrowing his eyebrows. Seeing his younger brother standing in the entrance with Marcus looming behind him like an ominous shadow, Sun Fang smirked and drawled, ”Hello, little brother.”
”You—” Sun Yi took a step toward him and frowned, ”What are you doing here? Haven’t you been thrown out?”
”Ouch,” Sun Fang said. ”That hurt.”
”No, I didn’t mean… it’s just that… well, didn’t father forbid you from coming back and bringing shame to the family?” Sun Yi said, wringing his hands in front of him and edging around the room like he was afraid of stepping too close to him.
Sun Fang rolled his eyes. ”Right, because I’m an incorrigible bastard.”
”If this is some sort of attempt to—” Marcus began, his rough voice cutting through the room like thunder.
”Oh, please, it’s not always about you.” Sighing, Sun Fang put his phone down and stared at them, frowning. ”Did you forget that Mianmian is my best friend? Did you seriously think I wouldn’t be here for him?”

”I, well…” Sun Yi gulped, plopping down on an armchair gracelessly. Marcus hovered behind him like a particularly annoying fly and Sun Fang’s frown grew harsher. Sun Yi twirled his hands in his lap and bit down on his lip, lowering his gaze and sniffling quietly.
Sun Fang rose an eyebrow.
Sun Yi peeked at him, lowering his gaze quickly again and sniffling quietly to himself. Marcus laid a hand on his shoulder and Sun Fang genuinely had no idea what was happening here. Rolling his eyes again, he said, ”I know you think I’m a horrible gold digger that would do anything for success, and all that. But seriously. Face reality. There’s more than one side to people. Just because you saw one doesn’t mean you know me.”
Picking up his phone again, Sun Fang continued matter-of-factly, ”Mianmian has specifically asked for my presence here, so I’m not going to fight with you. How about you? Do you want to argue with me while a baby is being born?” Raising his gaze from his phone, he furrowed his eyebrows and said, ”Come to think of it, you’re not related to Deng Xi. What are you even doing here?”
Sun Yi turned his gaze to the table in between them. Softly, he said, ”Father asked me to come, to give my family’s blessings.”
Humming, Sun Fang let the matter drop. He wasn’t particularly interested in the behind the scenes of the Sun family. It had nothing to do with him now and that was the way that he wanted it. So instead of pursuing that avenue of questioning he simply said, ”It’s gonna be awhile yet, so make yourselves comfortable.”
They frowned at him, Marcus narrowing his harsh eyes and glaring. Sun Fang assumed that it was that rumor of him hitting Marcus’ brother with a car that made him so suspicious, but seriously, why didn’t he just ask him about it? Or ask his brother, for that matter? It was this kind of reticence and inability to communicate that made Sun Fang unable to really relate to him.
He didn’t say anything else to them, focusing back on his phone’s game. He was in the middle of a dungeon battle after all, and the boss was about to appear. That was much more important than arguing with people who’d already made up their minds.
He clicked his tongue when his fingers pressed the wrong skill, setting the battle back and accidentally allowing a teammate to die.
Splaying out further on the couch so that nobody could sit next to him, he ignored the other people in the room and let the time pass by. Ivy handed him cold, sparkling soda at some point. At another point, it put down a plate of brownies in front of him. Sun Fang accepted each item gratefully, mumblings of ”thanks” leaving him each time something new was placed in his empty hand.
Before he knew it, the time had already come. Mianmian’s surgery was done and Deng Xi texted him plenty of pictures of Mianmian and the newborn (kind of flabby and pink-looking—did all newborns look like that?) baby, together with lots of crying emojis.
Sun Fang saved every picture.
