Chapter 5: A day on the farm

Harry teleported them, and Tagas went to knock on the door. Arthur was the one to answer, and the angel gave him a dazzling smile.

"I made pancakes," the angel placed the box with the breakfast under the farmer's nose. "I figured that you might like them?"

Arthur took the box, the ribbon not escaping his notice, and he stepped to the side. Harry then chose that time to show himself.

"What is the demon doing here?" Arthur asked, backing away.

"Why do you have to be so rude?" Harry asked. He smirked at the mortal, and bowed his head in respect. "I'll have you know I am Tagas's bodyguard. Where he goes, I go."

"He won't cause any trouble," the angel tried to assure his soulmate. "Don't you worry about him."

"But he is a..." Arthur was interrupted when Beth came, her cane hitting the ground with each step.

"Well, if it is not the little devil, and company, I, see?" The old lady spoke. Then, she saw the box in her son's hands. "What is this?"

"Pancakes," Tagas told her, beaming from ear to ear. He liked Beth. Sure, she thought him a mischievous rascal, but she was also fond of him. He was certain of that.

"See, Arthur? Some people can wake up early enough to make them. Well, what are you two waiting out for? Come on in," Beth then went back inside the house with her prize, and Arthur then turned his back to both the angel and the demon.

"Mother invited you in, please, join us for breakfast," and the farmer was gone. Not seeing the hurt expression on the angel's face.

"He will sing a different tune in a couple of days," Harry patted Tagas on the shoulders. "Soulmates never ignore each other, right?"

The angel nodded, although the hurt expression remained.

"Cheer up," Harry continued, as he pocked Tagas on the nose. "You are too cute when you are your usually bubbly self. Mopey like that you look like a kicked puppy."

Tagas rolled his eyes, but his lips did turn up. The two went in the house, and the angel led the demon into the kitchen. The pancakes were distributed in plates before long, and maple syrup was taken out.

"I already had a plate," Harry said, trying to place his plate in the middle of the table for the rest to enjoy.

"So? Look at you, all skin and bones. You eat, or find somewhere else to scare people, you scarecrow," Beth said, and Harry scrunched up his nose at her.

"I am no scarecrow," he protested.

"Look at Tagas, sculpted like a Greek God. Then at yourself, with barely any meat on you. Now eat," Beth then began to ignore Harry, and to eat her food in silence.

After the breakfast, Tagas and Harry followed Arthur out, who gave them each a shovel.

"We need to muck the barn," the farmer told them. "I would understand if you find that beneath you and refuse."

"I am no stranger to mucking," Tagas assured him. "I love keeping animals healthy."

"You'd be surprised at what we do down in the big cauldron," Harry said with a chuckle.

"Can we spend some time with the mother cow and her young?" Tagas asked hopefully. He was going to bless them both, if Arthur let him near them again.

"Sure, we need to change the straw in their enclosure. And, we need to change their water and give Anne new feed," Arthur listed. Normally, he did all that alone.

"How many cows do you have?" Harry asked, curious.

"Not many, just a shy over one hundred," Arthur admitted. "We make cheese on this farm from the milk, some yogurt as well."

"Can I help?" Tagas asked, wanting to spend as much time as he could with Arthur.

"Do you know how to make cheese and yogurt?" Arthur asked. What use was cheese for an angel?

"I do! Angels don't need to eat, but we still indulge. The garden of Eden produces all the food that we eat," Tagas told him. "The animals there are never butchered. We treat them with respect, and hunt on Earth, when we want meat in our diets."

"That is good to hear," Arthur's eyes softened at that. "Come on, we need to get to work."

They mucked the barn, and then Arthur led them to Anne the cow and her young child. Tagas skipped to them, and hugged the cow around the neck, laughing.

"Hello, girl," the angel began, as he made sure she was recovering just fine from the birth. Then, he uncovered his wings, and began to rub his feathers over her hide.

"What is he doing?" Arthur asked Harry, who was looking at Tagas dreamily.

"Blessing the cow, what else?" Harry asked. "She will live more than normal cows, have painless births. Give extra milk. You know, the usual."

The calf came to Tagas, and nuzzled his leg. The angel bent down, and then enveloped the animal into a hug.

"Hello, dearest," the angel murmured. A soft blue light coming off his wings, and sinking into the hide of the calf. "You will be a strong girl now, won't you? Strong and healthy."

The little calf's tail wagged behind it, and it nuzzled at Tagas with all it had.

"He really likes animals," Arthur spoke, feeling soft at the knees.

"Well, he was a cherub not too long ago," Harry said. Lucifer had told him all about Tagas and the angel's life until that point. "And his older brother told me that he still takes care of the animals in Eden. Even though it is not his duty."

"Do you think, he and I, are really soulmates?" Arthur asked the demon. Harry hummed low in his throat.

"If blue wings says so, then it is so. Look, you don't need to be afraid. Just look at him, he doesn't seem the type to harm a fly, does he?" Harry asked, and Arthur could only nod.

Tagas giggled, when the calf began to nuzzle his stomach. Tickling him. Anne's head was resting on his shoulder, and both of his wings were around the mother-daughter duo. Blessing them with health and happiness.
