Before the arrival of my new family, the cardboard boxes arrived at our place. As I gazed at them intently, a murmur escaped my mouth.

I had not heard much about his second-marriage partner, but I did hear that he used to live in an apartment. That was why I had imagined by myself until now that only a few cardboard boxes would arrive here.

The correct answer was, close to two dozen large cardboard boxes arrived.

I wonder if I packed all my clothes and other personal belongings, would it also astonishingly reach this number.

While I was trying to guess what was in that pile of cardboard boxes, my mother, dressed more spiritedly than usual, came out and stood beside me. Witnessing her wearing that long, flouncy skirt inside the house was perhaps since the day of that schoolteacher’s home visit.

“It seems that they will be arriving anytime soon. Are you mentally prepared?”

“No worries about it. I’ll be sure to greet them in a friendly manner.”

“I’m not worried much about that part though.”

Even though mom laughs saying that, she does look a little bit nervous.

―If I were to live together with the person I adore from today, I guess even I would get nervous. …

The face of Neneha floated in my mind.

―I’ll tell Neneha about my mom’s remarriage once I get settled with a new lifestyle. … For, if our relationship survives for a long period in future, there may come a day when I will have to introduce Nenehana to my mom and my new dad. …

While I was busy thinking about such stuff, the doorbell rang.

Mom called out to the front door and opened it.

It’s finally time.

Through the widening gap from the opening of the door, I see the figure of a mature man in his primes smiling serenely.

―Heh, so this man will be my new dad …, he does look very kind … He seems quite kind and …

But the door still opens.

As it proceeded to open gradually,… and by the time the door was completely open, I had somehow forgotten how to breathe altogether.

A familiar hair, lengthy enough to go till the waist.

A familiar figure, standing up in front of me.

And a face I was definitely familiar with.

Be it the eyes, the nose, the mouth, and all …, all resembled that image of my girlfriend whom I was imagining moments ago, the one I loved and adored greatly.

―Nenehana!?

Right at the end of my sight, Nenehana had also frozen up on seeing me.

“Daiki. This is Torii Ryosuke, your mother’s second marital partner. While this is his daughter, Nenehana-chan.”

My mother briskly introduced me to my new father and Nenehana-chan.

And then pointing towards me.

“And this is my son, Daiki. Look here! Daiki! Your Greetings!!”

“No, no, no, wait a minute! I didn’t hear about any kids on the other side too though!?”

I stopped my mother in between and complained to her in a whisper.

“Why the heck didn’t you tell me about this important thing right at first!?”

“Important thing right at first…? When I was about to say that, wasn’t it you who didn’t want to listen, didn’t you, Daiki? Come on now, just say hello to them quickly.”

What the heck. So, the important thing Mom was trying to tell me about her remarriage partner, was that they also had a child of their own?

It was such an important thing to talk about, but I just let my mom’s part of the story slide away without even hearing it.

And so, she got upset and gave up on communicating this important part of the information to me.

Furthermore, I forgot to ask her about it later.

“That’s what happens when you don’t try to listen to people properly.”

Mom said so with a nonchalant smiling look on her face.

From the look on her face, it seemed that she had already decided to get back at me by not telling me that her re-marital partner had a child from their first marriage.

― Still, the one at fault was me right!

I’m sorry about that!

If I had listened to my mother carefully, I would have known in advance that her re-marital partner had a child from his first marriage and eventually realized that the child was my girlfriend.

The fault here is completely mine. Here, I have no choice but to accept the reality without making any more fuss. …

“Oh,… um, I’m Daiki,…, it’s nice to meet you.”

I thought the greeting was as thin and empty as a greeting exchanged on the first day of high school.

― Come to think about it, did Nenehana know about this remarriage story beforehand?

I glanced towards Nenehana to check on her present status.

We saw each other at school every day and also chatted there every day. However, I had never heard from Nenehana’s mouth about her parents’ re-marriage even once.

I didn’t know that the re-marriage partner was about to bring Nenehana with them, and I had plans to tell that about Nenehana once I had settled down with my daily life for good; so, I did not tell her anything about my mother’s remarriage plans.

Then how did it go for Nenehana side? If Nenehana had known about this that was going to happen, Nenehana would have come up talking about this topic at hand one day too. …

I observed Nenehana’s facial expression to find out what was going on in her mind-heart.

Nenehana had a good-natured smile plastered on her face, but her eyes were completely baffled.

―…from that feeling, it seems that even Nenehana didn’t care to properly learn the details of her father’s remarriage in any way either. …

I chuckled, imagining her inwardly panicking about it like “what to do! what to do!”.

Then, next, Nenehana’s father introduced her to us.

“This is my daughter, Nenehana. Daiki and Nenehana attend the same high school, but have you ever been in the same class before?”

No, we didn’t. But we are on the same club committee… or so when I was about to answer that…, I became a little worried.

―Rather in fact, we are dating each other …

Should I say all this or should I not?

When I was in that dilemma, my sixth sense whispered to me.

No, rather wait. If suddenly so much information “comes out”, and hearing all of this altogether, you never know how Nenehana’s father would react to all that. Or so.

He has such a gentle smile and demeanour, but what would happen if he happened to really adore his daughter very much?

If he’s the type to say, “I don’t approve of any boyfriends,” he might change when he finds out that I’m her boyfriend. Then there is even a possibility that my mother’s remarriage proposal would be abruptly broken off by him.

I suppose it would be better to wait and see how Nenehana reacts to the situation. …
