“BAM!”

The bedroom door swings open slamming into the wall. Jumping up in my bed I prepare for a fight to the death. That’s when I see her.

“Rise and Shine.”

Are we going to act like you didn’t just kick in the door?

“We leave in 20min, so get dressed and meet me at the car.”

Guess we are. I nod, and she walks away.

Getting in the car I try to persuade her. “You know ma I’m still going to have to retake this year so what really is the point of going back to school?”

“If that is the case then this last month should give you a head start for next year. Either way, it will be good for you to get back into a routine and see your friends. OH! And because I said so.”

After the meeting, we went back home. I sat down in a chair on the back porch. I fucking knew I would have to repeat the year. I hate school. Whatever, now that I’m free I need to figure out what happened yesterday. It was like time stood still just for me, but only when I was in the most danger. I wonder if I can force it to stop. Sitting in the chair I strained myself trying to force time to slow down.

What am I doing, I look like I’m shitting my pants. It can’t just be in my head. I’ll have to force it on by putting myself in a dangerous situation…… Well…. maybe that’s not the best idea. Can my brain tell what a dangerous situation is? All I need to do is make it think that I’m in danger. I grabbed a tennis ball out of the garage and laid down in the backyard grass.

Here goes nothing. I toss the ball into the air right above my face and just let it fall. I hope this works. When it got about a foot away from my face time slowed down. Awesome, it wasn’t just me going crazy. Wait it’s moving faster than before. I try to grab the ball with my hands but they weren’t fast enough to catch it.

“Fuck…… oowww. Yep, when everything slows down that includes me. That’s fucking stupid. I thought I had a superpower like the people from the war. What's the damn point if I move slowly too? What, just so I can enjoy getting hit with a tennis ball in slow motion. Well, it did kind of save me yesterday, but I could have sworn I moved faster than this. Plus everything else was slower. Good thing I found my old phone in the bedroom because I have to tell Tobie about this. Looking through the window at my Ma, should I tell her? Would she turn me in? Does me having this power mean that all the stories of the war were true? No, I can’t tell her.

The gate opens and Tobie walks into the yard. “So what was so important that you needed to blow up my phone this early?”

“Alright, this might sound a little crazy but just listen to me…… I can slow down time.”

“Hahaha, did you really call me over just to tell me that? I mean I don’t mind I wasn’t doing shit, but still?”

“No, I’m dead-ass. Just wait here for a second.” Let’s see, all I need is a marker and a ball to prove it. After getting a marker and basketball out of the garage I come back. “Write anything you want on the basketball and I’ll tell you what it is.”

“So you’re doing magic now, reading my mind?”

“No dumbass, you’re going to spin the ball and I’ll read it while it’s spinning.”

“I guess that does make some sense, for you at least. Wait why are you laying on the ground?”

“You have to drop it at my head while it’s spinning for time to slow down.”

“Oh, of course. How could I forget the dropping it on your head part? I guess getting hit in the head doesn’t hurt if you don’t have anything up there.”

“Just shut up and do it. I’m not stupid. I’ll move out of the way before it hits me in the head this time.”

“What do you mean, this time?”

Shit. “Nothing now ju—” Trying to catch me off guard by dropping it while I was talking I see. Well, it won’t work on me. Now let’s see what it says. The words on the ball rotate into my view.……….. I can’t believe people think you’re the more responsible one out of us. I sit up while tilting my head to the left, so the ball just grazes my right ear.

“Wow! I’m surprised it didn’t hit you in the face.”

“Yeah, I’m sure that’s what you were trying to do since you don’t believe me.”

“So what did it say, Mr. Time?”

“Seriously?”

“I guess you didn’t see it after all.”

“……. I suck dick.”

“I know you do but what did the ball say?”

“FUCK you.”

“Hahahaha. I’m sure you want to. That’s a cool party trick, though I don’t see how it proves anything.”

“Come on man you couldn’t do that shit. I saw it because time slowed down.”

“If you can slow down time you should be able to move superfast? Or at least that’s what it would look like to me.”

“Well, I can’t really move when it happens. I mean I move, just super slow and I have to strain really hard to move slightly faster.”

“If what you say is true, which I don’t think so, that sounds more like you’re slowing down your perception of time. Not the actual time itself.”

“Yeah I know it’s basically useless, but it’s still kind of cool.

“You really must be fucking stupid.”

“Why?”

“Because if you could do that you would basically have superhuman reflexes. Which is another reason why I don’t believe you.”

Like with the car crash. “I think I know how to prove it to you now.”

“How’s that?”

“Hit me.”

“What?”

“Hit me. Don’t be a bitch.”

“No. You just got out of a coma! who knows What could happen if I hit you in the head.”

“One, you’re not going to be able to hit me. Two, then don’t hit me in the head.”

“Is that what you think? You know I did karate?”

“Yeah everybody knows you did karate in elementary sch—” Swing. Time stops. Again trying to catch me off guard. Well, he is just aiming for my chest. Twisting my body his hand passed through the air. I am moving just as slow, but I can see exactly where he is aiming. Plus it doesn’t take a ton of movement to avoid it. This is fucking awesome.
