The apocalypse was sudden.
Penelope locked herself in her room as tears continued to pour down. There were tons of grievances she hadn't let out. Kristine never really bothered socializing with her daughter leaving the young mourning Penelope for herself. She was there to only be as a mom yet not into her role, neither any was less for her nonexistent dad who neither tried to defend his daughter.
It took quite a long time before Penelope managed to calm down. She brushed her hair and washed her face, the cold water slowly making her red eyes and nose turn normal.
Afterwards, Penelope walked down to the kitchen. She glanced at the wall clock before pulling the door, and when the door was pulled, Penelope was stupefied as she saw the scene of her mother carrying large boxes and her dad, Antonio, helping her out. May sat on a chair eating a cookie.
“Mom...” Penelope didn't know what to say. She was still upset about the prejudice. Kristine heard her daughter's voice and immediately called, “Penelope you've been out all day sleeping, come and assists us with putting these boxes in the car.”
“I...Alright.” Penelope walked over and helped with lifting the heavy boxes up. Upon seeing her child do work, Kristen sat near May and gave her a cup of juice.
“May's surely a cutie, here you deserve this drink.”
“Thank you Aunt!”
“The boxes have been all placed. Where are we going next? Based by what you said May, those...monsters are moving north towards the city so the least is at the south, right?”
“Wow, Uncle you are so smart! Yes, May thinks so too that south is safe.”
Penelope overhead their conversation and was stunned. What do they mean? She was lagging behind their topic and didn't know what was what. “Dad..., by monsters..what do you mean?”
“Didn't you watch news—”
“Penelope, it's bad to eavesdrop on adults.” Kristine cut off Antonio's words and slammed the table in furry. “I was hoping you'd get better after being taught a lesson a while ago?”
“I did not mean that mom, more or less May is not an adult either. Why can't I listen to your conversation, you're my parents!” Penelope muttered in bitterness and completely submitted under her mother's ridiculous scolding.
Finally, Kristine had calm down. She sat up and took May's hand. “Penelope, go get ready, we're leaving the house to the south.”
“Yes Mother.” Penelope lowered her head and dashed towards her room, hurriedly packing her clothes and her few important things that was missing something dear to her heart. May appeared in Penelope's mind. She hated this child. She truly did. She abhors her existence.
‘Penelope, it's alright. May will go away when she returns home then you can resume your life. Yes...’
It took Penelope a few minutes to get ready. Her bag was already packed and she dressed up minimally. It was a green floral dress and it has pockets. Penelope took a key from her dresser and tied it on a ring, then she placed it on her pocket.
“Penelope!!” Her mother called her out again.
Penelope ran downstairs with a bag in tow and was amazed when she saw Kristine wearing heavy clothing, Antonio was too and May was less. May was only wearing a blue princess dress with uneven socks as a getup. There was also a hat with glasses above her head. She was dressed strangely.
“Geez. Antonio did you really have to change the tires at this time?” Kristine impatiently tapped her soles on the ground and ignored Penelope who was still behind her. “There are zombies coming this way and its a race against time, hurry!"

“Zombies?” Penelope blurted out in surprise.
May adjusted her things and looked at Penelope with a particular glint in her eyes. No one knew what she was thinking. There was a momentary pause within her actions as she nudged on Antonio's sleeve.
“Uncle, can the car fit two more people?”
“Hey, what does this trip have to do with zombies?”
“Penelope, I had a slip of tongue. We meant there's a limited holiday freebie on our destination trip. However, it seems that there's a change of plans and we have to leave in a hurry. Your paternal grandmother is having a stroke!” Kristine interjected and pinched Antonio secretly.
“Mom I'm not mishearing things, what's with the zombies!?” Penelope cried out.
Kristine frowned, “Young lady, there is no zombies!”
“Kyaaa!”
Yet, May let out a scream. Penelope observed around and noticed that a crowd was gathering nearby and those people crowding were looking weird and disgusting.
They had stiff movements and rocked on their steps incoherently. Upon setting sight on these inhuman creatures, Kristine shrieked and panicked as she pushed Antonio to drive and let May enter the car in a hurry.
“Hey, Mom!”
Penelope dashed to the car but the door was locked. Penelope immediately got goosebumps and knocked on the window furiously. “Mom, let me in! Tell me more that this is not an issue...there's zombies...”
“Penelope, they're not zombies. They're cosplayers ” But Kristine's attempt to fool her daughter was futile. “Stop lying mom, don't leave me please!”
“Penelope, let us go! There's not enough space in the car and we have to get your grandma in a hurry cause she had stroke! Just wait here, okay? We'll return with rescue.”
“Nooo! Mom, don't abandon me! I'm your daughter!” Penelope shouted as her hands continued to ram on the window. Mercilessly, Kristine took a final glance at her child and supported her husband to drive.
“Dad, MOm, May, don't leave me please!”
Penelope was pushed off to the ground by the momentum of the start of the car. She, however, crawled up and ran after them. But when she passed by the gates, she instead meets with a crowd of zombies heading her way.
