Things progressed slowly at the academy. Ino knew that eventually they would catch up to where she was writing and reading wise, but Yoshino had said that could be years away. Still, she liked studying with Sakura and Iruka would frequently give them 100s on assignments, with flattering comments in the margins, all of which was helpful for securing more sleepovers.

It was difficult not to pay attention to Naruto and Sasuke. First, because they featured so prominently in Sakura’s dreams, and second because they were both loud, rowdy boys. Naruto definitely took first place in rowdiness. He would frequently pull pranks on anyone he could get away with, although his favorite target was Iruka-sensei. It was difficult to get through a day without feeling frustrated by his antics. It seemed like he always had to be the center of attention. Ino was sure that she would have hated him just as much as the other kids if not for what had happened during the Winter Festival and the way he looked at the end of school each day. It also helped that she and Sakura had wondered how Sakura could be so mean to someone in her dreams, although they did understand a little bit more now.

His parents never came before Ino’s or Sakura’s so she never got to see what they looked like, but she wondered what they must be like for him to seem so sad about going home every day.

Half-way through the school year they started throwing child-safe kunai. Mizuki would lead the outdoor sessions, and even though Ino had her own set she wasn’t very good. The kunai never went where her arm pointed, and sometimes they would go in random directions even though she was sure she’d done the motion perfectly. Mizuki would help sometimes but she got a lot more tips from her family than from school. When the first class ranking got posted she was in the bottom half. Sasuke was first, and Sakura had gotten right near the middle of the pack, ahead of Ino, who was grumpy for a whole week. Sakura pointing out that Ino had been in first place consistently all year for reading and writing did little to improve Ino’s mood. At least she’d thrown better than Naruto and Shikamaru.
