“So it’s just a shared diary project?” Mebuki asked.

“Looks like it, I only looked at the most recent two before I started to feel bad about invading their privacy.” Fuyumi confirmed. “There was also a big scroll that had a timeline of their friendship, complete with pictures, and sadly some of the nightmares Sakura has been having.” Silence descended on the sitting room briefly, where Inoichi and Kizashi sat alongside their wives drinking tea.

“Yes well, I’m happy that you found out what it was.” Kizashi said eventually. “We couldn’t really think of anything too nefarious that the girls could be doing with extra paper and ink, so we didn’t mind supplying them. But I do admit to being rather curious what would cause our girls to go through scrolls like I go through transaction receipts.”

Sneaking back down the hallway upstairs Ino whispered to Sakura, “They bought our ruse!” And the two of them went back to Ino’s room.

“Sooooo… aren’t you gonna share any of the juicy details lovely wife?” Inoichi looked positively gleeful.

“Inoichi. If I ever catch you snooping through our daughter’s diary without a good reason you will be sleeping outside for a month.” Fuyumi said, although she was unable to keep her lips from curling upward slightly.

 “You’re no fun.”

“Speaking of secrets, I don’t suppose either of the girls has come to talk to you about nightmares recently?” Mebuki cut in before the bickering could begin.

“No.” Inoichi said concernedly. “And I’m starting to wonder if I made the right decision to try to comfort and reassure them that it was fine and normal. Little kids are so terrified of being called out as weird or different.”

“Well, we did the same.” Kizashi said slowly. “To be fair it does seem like Sakura is doing better, but I’m pretty sure we owe your daughter at least some credit for that.” The Yamanakas both smiled and Inoichi returned “It’s been a wonderful friendship for all of us I think. I don’t suppose you’ve chosen where Sakura will attend school yet?”

Mebuki chuckled before saying, “I’m pretty sure our Sakura would attend the academy regardless of what we said, even if Ino wasn’t going. Now that Ino is going we would never be forgiven if she went anywhere else.”
