In a clear voice, he asked, “Tell me how she died.”
He Yun reported, “The prison guards didn’t notice anything wrong with her because she was lying in bed. They only realized that something was off when they delivered lunch and couldn’t wake her up. One of them entered the prison to check, and that’s when they discovered that she was no longer breathing.”
“So those prison guards didn’t keep an eye on her?”
His eyes could no longer hide his fury. Even Pei Ge, who was standing beside him, could feel the anger simmering just beneath the surface.
“Sir, it is our negligence.”
On the other end, He Yun was actually standing before Ji Miao’s cell, watching the doctor transfer her body into the readied stretcher. The gray bed was stained with blood, as though she had shed her blood on the body.
The redness of it formed a stark contrast to the dull greyness of the bed. In this bleak cellar, the pungent metallic smell seemed to have pervaded the air the moment the prison guards were alerted to her death. The smell seemed to even induce the urge to vomit.
“I don’t wanna hear any excuse from you. Find out why she committed suicide, as well as the records of everyone she met. I want a detailed and complete record. If you can’t find it or miss something out, then you no longer need to continue working for my company.”
Ji Ziming hung up after saying this, turning to look at Pei Ge who had a distraught face, and felt heartache.
“Don’t worry. I won’t let her death be in vain. I will find out the reason for her death.”
He Yun became even more careful after receiving the orders and quickly went to investigate who the lady met, including the guards, in the prison before her death.
“She had a younger sister.”
Pei Ge choked. She did not intend to lock her up in prison forever. She planned to let her go after finding out the one behind this matter. Even if she did not intend to let her return to the company, she would still give her some money for her younger sister’s treatment. It would be enough to let the two of them live for a while without worrying about basic needs.
Alas, the lady could not wait until then—rather Pei Ge could not.
She could not wait until Ji Miao revealed the one behind her or for the latter’s sister to make a full recovery.
“Don’t worry. I’ve already sent bodyguards over to protect her. She’s already at the hospital preparing for surgery.”
Ji Ziming hugged the woman by the waist and rested his chin on her head while his other hand stroked her back. “Don’t worry; I am still here.”
“But if her younger sister finds out that she’s no longer around, how sad will she be?”
She did not dare to think further. She was afraid of such separation—afraid of her closest kin leaving her. She did not want to accept and did not want to even think of what would happen if others were to experience this.
In truth, it was not only her who could not accept it. Even the usually cold-blooded Ji Ziming felt a dull ache in his heart.

By the time He Yun called again to report on his investigation, it was already noon the next day. The call arrived just as the couple walked out of the dining area and got in the car.
“Sir, we’re done with the investigation; we only have one suspect, but we currently don’t have a face to match the person. I will investigate further, so please be rest assured. In addition, Ji Miao left a letter behind for madam. As it was blotched with blood, I had to ask someone to clean it up. I will send the letter over to your office in half an hour.”
“Alright. Properly and carefully investigate the person you didn’t manage to identify. There must be a time in the future when he will show up again. Also, pay close attention to Old Lady Qu. Qu Xiujie is still unconscious in the hospital, so I’m afraid that she will do something to him.”
“Yes, sir,” affirmed He Yun. He did not mind anything as long as his boss did not continue blaming him for this fiasco.
After receiving Ji Ziming’s orders, he continued busying himself.
“A letter?”
Pei Ge did not dare to believe it. Still, with Ji Miao’s death, her letter was no longer useful. It only made her feel guiltier toward her.
Death was another phase in life. It was different from the birth of life itself or living, for death was much quieter when it came.
Ji Ziming led the way into his office, thinking of bringing Pei Ge to visit Ji Miao’s younger sister later if she still felt awful then. Although her treatment had been delayed for a long time, it did not affect her underlying illness. Hence, she still had a chance of recovery if she properly accepted treatment.
It could be considered as the last compensation for Ji Miao.
“Yes, she wrote a letter to you. He Yun will deliver it in half an hour.”
His gentle eyes were dyed with heartache as he saw her eyes moistening. His low voice seeped into her heart. “Don’t worry; I’ll ensure her younger sister’s full recovery.”
“I know.”
Pei Ge nodded, thinking that even if Ji Miao was no longer around, her sister still was. The last ‘thank you’ that lady spoke to her still reverberated in her ears.
By the time the letter was delivered, she had already sorted out her feelings, yet her heart went into disarray after she finished reading it. Unbeknown to her and without her noticing it, she had become someone’s most trusted person.
Although Ji Miao did betray her, Pei Ge was not saddened by it. Instead, she understood her. As a mother herself, how could she not understand the feeling of being helpless when your closest kin needed help the most?
For example, during Ran Ran’s surgery, she was worried about her safety and went without sleep or food for three whole days. There was also that time when she found out that Ji Chi was her child…
There were too many examples that she could not mention one by one. As long as Ji Miao wanted to, she could even send her back to her younger sister’s side. Alas, she would never know that now.
Even Pei Ge herself was unwilling to bring up such a sad and bleak past.
“What did the letter say?” asked Ji Ziming softly. He knew from her expression that the letter had probably nothing to do with the truth or even the one behind the lady. It would only be related to the two siblings.
“She only asked me to take good care of her younger sister.”
