Rebecca Evantheon II

•❅──────✧❅✦❅✧──────❅•

It was a rainy morning. Raindrops kept running down the window, like a painting on the window.

A mist of water rising like a haze enveloped the garden, and the flowers which had been in full bloom could not stand the raindrops and bowed their heads. The sun, which had been bright yesterday, hid behind the grayish dark clouds, only exhaling a faint breath-like light.

The woman, wearing a shawl and holding a cup of warm tea, stared silently out of the window. The gloomy landscape of the garden seemed to represent the heart of Rebecca.

A few days ago, she heard that Karhan had visited the Duke. She was curious about the reason, but she had no one to ask.

Neither Karhan nor her husband, the Duke of Evantheon, were close with her. They lived in the same house, but they rarely met face to face, so it was worse than living as strangers.

A long time ago, Rebecca met her current husband through a political marriage. The memories of her past were as cloudy as the garden, but her first meeting with the Duke was still vivid.

—As long as you stay in your place, I won’t get involved. So don’t expect anything from me either.

Unfortunately, she fell in love with him at first sight as he uttered those chilly words. And at the same time, she realized that she could not receive anything from him in return because the Duke had someone he loved.

Rebecca had low expectations. It was a vain hope that he would give his heart when they lived together. But his heart was like an iron wall, and he didn’t look at her even after they got married.

Throwing caution to the wind, Rebecca spent her first night with him at the sanctuary of his vassals to give birth to a successor. The child who was conceived that day was the eldest son, Blair. Now that Rebecca gave birth to a child, she hoped that her husband would become a little more loyal to the family.

—Is that your son?

The Duke who saw Blair for the first time said indifferently.

—Now that I have a successor, I don’t need to sleep with you anymore.

At that time, Rebecca finally gave up all her hopes. She no longer longed for her husband’s heart, but remained faithful to her duties as Duchess. The lonely Duchess had only her son to lean on.

Then one day. In the middle of the night, the drunken Duke of Evantheon came to her bedroom. He embraced Rebecca with his body as heavy as a wet cotton ball. Not in his right mind, Rebecca was dragged away by the whims of the Duke.

He approached her, whispering that he loved her. At that word, the fire, which she thought had already extinguished in her heart, rekindled.

Rebecca would have been the happiest woman in the world. If only the Duke, who woke up the next day after making love to her, hadn’t said that.

—Why are you in my bedroom?

Rebecca was ashamed of herself. It was more shameful that their coalition that one night had so easily revived her love than the fact that the Duke had confused her with his lover. . Rebecca ran out of her bedroom, resenting the Duke.

But, in the end, a new life came to her after that one night. When she found out that she was pregnant, it was too late to abort it. The Duke was displeased with Rebecca’s pregnancy. He thought it was a betrayal to his lover.

The child who had come to the world unaware of their sins was unbeloved. She didn’t have the confidence to love the child who had come after the one night mistake. When time passed and the child was held in her arms, Rebecca was speechless because the child looked just like her.

—Yes… You’re my child.

Rebecca decided to cherish her second child. The child grew up well. Rebecca, on behalf of the disinterested Duke, named her child – Karhan. It means a rising star, because the eyes of her child resemble the rising star at dawn.

As time went on, the Duke, unlike the way he treated his eldest son, who was his successor, was cold to Karhan. The situation where Karhan was hated by the Duke was very similar to how the Duke treated her. When she tried to hug him a little more out of pity, Karhan smiled as if he knew how she felt.

At one time, Karhan was the pride of Rebecca. It was around the age of five that Karhan, who was a good son, became strange. He started by breaking things, causing accidents, stealing valuables or telling lies.

—The ring came out of your pocket. Are you going to deny that?

—….. No. I didn’t steal it.

—Reflect on yourself in the room.

Rebecca, like other mothers, disciplined him with appropriate punishments. Since he was a child, she tried to understand, but he went too far. Tired by her husband’s coldness and Karhan’s trouble, she became more temperamental as time went by.

—What are you doing!

Rebecca shouted at Karhan who was squatted in the corner and digging a hole with a branch. The startled Karhan looked up. Her husband’s face seemed to be overlapping with his face.

As he grew older, he looked a lot like her husband’…. Rebecca, with a fed-up look on her face, said,

—You are beyond control now.

Karhan only bowed his head with a wounded face.

It was the day after that. When she woke up, she sat down in front of the dressing table to get ready and screamed.

—Kyaaa!

There was a body of a smashed bird on the dressing table. All the feathers were scattered on the floor, and blood splattered everywhere. When Rebecca’s scream was heard the employees and Blair came running first.

Rebecca, who was being supported, found Karhan, who came in late. Karhan was looking at her blankly, holding a small cage. In an instant, goosebumps appeared all over her body.  For the first time she felt terrified of her son.

Since then, strange things have happened several times. All the circumstances pointed to Karhan, but it was abominable to deny it. Rebecca seemed to have a mental illness. She thought it might be strange for her to doubt her child.

Eventually, she came to the point of depression, and it suddenly occurred to her.

‘If I just give up and hate him, wouldn’t my heart be at ease?’

Eventually, Rebecca let go of Karhan. She didn’t hug him or talk to him anymore. At first, she felt guilty, but soon she felt that her actions were right. Dislike became hatred, and it was terrible to even be in front of him. Rebecca spoke to the Duke and drove Karhan to the battlefield.

By comparison, Blair was a mature and good boy. There was a day when she was very sick and when she woke up with an illness all alone, she found a wet towel on her forehead. On top of that, the bedside was decorated with flowers that Rebecca liked.

She later asked her employees, but they shook their heads, saying it wasn’t them. Since then, on rainy days, a flower has always been placed by the door. It may not be much, but it was a great comfort to Rebecca.

Rebecca took it for granted that it was Blair, and naturally came to rely on him.

“…I miss you.”

Rebecca’s gaze wandered through the garden. However, in her mind’s eyes, she saw Blair who was in a distant foreign country. Although he left as if he were being chased, he would come back when things were settled.

Even if he made such a mistake, it was only a small slip toRebecca. That good boy couldn’t kill people with malice, could he? However, it became complicated because the deceased person was the only child of the Count.

Still, she was in agreement with the Count, and tried to engage Karhan and Stella Delotta to secure a huge settlement.

Then, when she heard that Karhan was dating Lilia Bloden, she quickly abandoned Delotta. If the engagement ceremony was held safely, Bloden would raise the settlement money.

Rebecca put down the tea cup. She heard that Karhan has been going around outside lately. She was wondering what he was doing, but she stopped looking into it because she didn’t want to be interested.

“If you just do your part quietly, I don’t want anything….”

Karhan was only a temporary successor. The real successor was Blair, though he gave the seat to Karhan temporarily because he couldn’t withstand pressure from the elders who were saying that the seat of the heir couldn’t be left empty. So she hoped that Karhan would act like a dead person until Blair returned.

Rebecca slowly turned around and walked out of her bedroom.

On a sunny afternoon, Lilia went out to the backyard for tea. Standing next to Lilia, Malek delivered the news he had heard,

“…that’s why he’s stuck at home.”

“That’s good,”

Lilia nodded her head lightly. A few days have passed since the savage love quarrel at the banquet. There, Richard, who was humiliated, had his reputation hit rock bottom. Rumours spread quickly, and everyone was talking about Richard.

Rumours are always common occurrences, but the scale of this one was extraordinary. He even had an affair while playing with his fiancee’s money, close to their wedding date, and became a pathetic and unscrupulous person. When she remembered Richard, who had been risking his life in society, Lilia raised the corners of her mouth in a sneering smile.

“The timing was right,”

Lilia had been gathering information about the women Richard slept around with. There was a limit to personal revenge, so she was going to use them to bring down Richard.

Perhaps the name Bloden is scary, but everyone cooperated well. In particular, it went smoothly thanks to Rose Valla’s enthusiastic performance.

And early this morning, all the women left the capital to avoid Richard’s retaliation. Rather than being afraid of Richard, they tried not to be seen by Lilia. After writing a memorandum of willingness to live as if they were dead, they went down to the countryside.

Lilia saw clearly that Richard was grinding his teeth at her. However, Marquis Tersian was in a difficult position to retaliate against her, as he was struggling against the embezzlement and corruption he had committed.

In addition, she thought that Karhan was a temporary successor and excluded him from this, but the Duke of Evantheon made a move himself…… For the time being, she had to keep an eye on it.

Lilia’s expression after putting down the tea cup gradually subsided. This was just the beginning. This event was nothing more than reaping the seeds that Richard himself had sown.

“I’ll see to your end”

From now on, she was thinking of putting financial pressure on Richard bit by bit. Until now, he had lived on what he had received, but if nothing came in, the wealth would soon run out. He couldn’t even cut back on his spending, so it would go as expected.

There are witnesses, and if he doesn’t want to lose any more honor here, he’ll have to sign the break up agreement.

“Did you send a letter of thanks to the organizer?”

“Yes. I’ve given them a present, too.”

Lilia praised him for the good work. This time, she was able to invite all the women related to Richard to the banquet with the help of the organizer. This was because the organizer, who heard Lilia’s plan, readily agreed, saying it would be fun.

Lilia lifted the tea cup. A deep scent rose like smoke. It was tea leaves sold by the Delotta family.

She previously attended a tea party hosted by Stella, and since it was pretty good, she put in an order. Stella is still buying flower seedlings, so in a way they are probably helping each other. Malek glanced for a moment at Lilia, with a sly smile, and then delivered the next news,

“We have received a call from the atelier.”

As Lilia put down the tea cup, Malek continued,

“She wants to show you her painting.”

Finally, Vanessa’s painting was completed.
