RBR Chapter 19 A Failed Try
Eric's mindscape couldn't calm down even when he arrived home. Mathew's words were still reverberating in his mind, fueling his excited state.
Exploring this world! He had been so caught up in his gloominess that he hadn't thought about it fully. What if he was bound to die? Couldn't he still live his life fully? Life had many facets and things to offer!
(Tsk!)
He hummed a tune while the water cascaded down his body. There was absolutely no way he couldn't enjoy his life even if he knew it was about to end. He had been worrying himself over something totally beyond his control.
'I have to become an explorer.' A fire started within his chest at the mere thought. The liberation alone was sublime, serving to untethered his burdens into the void.
(One of my objectives aligns with that.)
'Huh!? Why? Are you planning in assimilating me into the collective?' Eric asked with an urgent need to know the answer, a chill enveloping his mind even as warm water slid down his body.
(No. That would be too soon. We haven't even tested...)
The rest wasn't said, probably the things he wasn't supposed to know.
"..." He sighed. It looked like he would never know. Would he have to ask the headmaster? No no no...that was not even an option. That man was way too dangerous and unpredictable!
"Anyway, the first course of action is to make sure I pass through the rest of the years at school in peace."
-----
"Eric, you seem to be in a very good mood today, what's the occasion?" Lisa asked as the trio sat around the dinner table, with Baguma still nowhere to be seen. The man hadn't appeared since he had dropped him off onto her. His elusiveness added to the mysteriousness surrounding him. Eric wondered what he was up to all the time since he was the owner of the blue sphere of electricity within his mind space. If he could, he would stay by the man's side permanently.
"I have chosen to become an explorer down the line." He answered even as his cellular collective mumbled praises about the texture of the potato in his mind.
"An explorer. It would be surprising of you don't make it with your level of abilities. Its wonderful that you have found something you want to do, congratulations." Lisa's eyes gazed at him with warmth and encouragement. It caused a warm stuffy feeling to appear within his chest for a moment.
"What about me, mother?" Elec asked in eagerness.
"We shall see after you manage to survive the awakening." She turned from warm to mild calmness, causing Elec's shoulders to droop.
Eric had no words of comfort since even he, still lacked enough data about that particular ceremony.
"How come you don't go outside this city? Could it be that you aren't an explorer?" Eric asked one of the questions that had been burning in the pit of his stomach this past week. She was still young and fit, unless there was some internal problems within her body? That brought a faint feeling of worry which he quickly chased away with a shake of his head.
"Being an explorer isn't something that can be taken lightly. Everytime someone walks into the wilderness, there is an 80% chance of death...even if that person is as strong as a clan leader of the spectrum clans..."
"What!? Isn't that practically zero?!" Elec literally jumped out of his chair, his voice so high, that it created multiple echoing on the walls.
"This is one of the pieces of the information closely guarded by the city...the high mortality rate." She continued.
"What about the families of those who die outside? Don't they speak of it?" Eric asked. It was a surprise that he hadn't found anything on the city's internet.
"Of course, they are paid reparations. Enough for them to live on for years, not to mention that fact that an explorer is one of the richest professions there is. Just a single inch-long piece of organic matter from the outside is enough to earn a person millions! Some rare pieces can go for billions!"
That piece of information caused the two boys to gape at her.
-----
Last friday, the matriarch had summoned her. She had been very nervous as she hadn't managed to gather any more information about the boy. It was mostly because of those other two who kept hanging around him. She had the urge to grit her teeth at the hindrances even now. They were just that annoying.
The good thing was that no punishment had come, but it had also been...not good. The matriarch had given her the order to try and become the best of friends with Eric. It had been...what was the word...'unexpected.' With the clan's shady dealings, she wouldn't have been surprised if an order to put the boy to death had been issued, instead, 'become close'! What was that? He was dangerous enough to kill her if she didn't keep a sliver of attention on him, a large hassle if you asked her.
But the bigger problem was the way to get close to the boy. Friendship...that was something she had never known. Her siblings had hatched at the same time as she, a bond forged from the onset. But here, she was being asked to start over.

How do you go about how to become friends? What are you supposed to do? These questions and many others were swimming around in her mind until she opened up her search terminal and started surfing the net for answers. There were many and varied, but she found that none particularly dealt with her situation, so what was she to do?
'I will have to jump in and start a conversation...what a pain!!!'
She rolled around in her bed, all the while howling in her mind. This was complicated. One of the reasons she was avoiding all the others was that she didn't know how to start up a bond with them.
But she also knew that she had to form new bonds, except that it scared her. What if she forgot her siblings in the future? What if these new people weren't as good as her siblings?
She tore into the pillow, scattering feathers around the room. How frustrating!
But the order had to be obeyed. She had already wasted a day. Tomorrow, she had to make an effort. How nice it would be if she could catch him alone, without those hanger-ons. Then it would be easier...right?
-----
The new day dawned with Eric still high on the excitement. He greeted the other two, Jet and Mathew with such vigor that they gave him weird looks. He even caught the whisper in Elec's ear with Jet was wondering whether he had gone crazy.
"I am still sane, just that I have found myself a goal." He said.
"I can see that, the burning ambition in your eyes. Though, do know that this is just the initial excitement. It will wear off." Mathew cautioned.
"I know."
The four headed up the floors, the school having been built with no elevator for the students. Apparently it was so that they could exercise, after all, with advanced technology, very few walked. Most used hover-boards or were driven to school.
It was all to curb laziness. Unless someone intentionally wanted to, being overweight was a thing of the past, not to mention the related diseases.
Eric hummed as his steps created the music, with the other three going along. It was the theme of the currently most popular fantasy VRMMORPG, Bio-Fantasy online.
Most of those on the same stairs with them either looked at them as if they were a weird bunch, or hummed along with them. It was mostly the boys, though some girls also followed along.
"Wow! I never knew this many people played the game!" Elec muttered in amazement and wonder.
After the climb, Eric stopped his humming, and so did the rest.
'Today, I must enjoy my day!' He thought to himself as the entrance to the classroom entered his vision. Only that he was taken aback after seeing the figure standing beside the door frame, and it wasn't him alone as he heard audible gasps from Elec and the other two.
'Why is she outside? Could it be that she's waiting for someone?' He wondered, but didn't put it to mind. Leah's business was hers alone. His need for wilderness trivia had been smothered by his excitement and new purpose in life. When the time came, he would appear there himself and explore to his heart's content. The secrets buried inside his body still made him curious, but he was fine without knowing. They were part of his body after all, once activated, he would know.
"We...need-toto...talk."
"Huh!" Eric understood her, but what was with that messed up wordage? Upon looking back, he saw his trio of friends gaping at her as if they had just seen an alien. She was standing in front of Eric, having barred his path, except her gaze was downwards, causing him to wonder more why that was.
"What do you mean? Why are you speaking weirdly?" He asked, only for the girl to accelerate from zero to incredible in an instant, leaving behind a metaphorical dust cloud in her wake.
"Was that really Leah?" Jet's shocked voice came from behind, the tone making it seem as if he had just seen a Rampager in broad daylight.
"Don't shake me, even I am wondering whether an alien has somehow replaced her." Mathew chasitised, even with his voice laced with astonishment. Jet was channeling his shock by shaking the living daylights out of him, a comical reaction that would have earned a chuckle out of Eric any other day.
"This is the second time she has taken the initiative to speak to you." Elec's tone was accusatory. His eyes were already in the 'I will kill you mode.'
"I don't understand. Why did she run away?" Eric rubbed his hair while tilting his head.
"Was she about to confe-mmmmmm..." Jet's words became muffled, Mathew having clamped down on his mouth with a palm. Eric had now turned towards them, some amusement in his gaze at their antics only for a glare from Elec to cause a chill down his spine. He saw rage, suspicion, accusation, and many other emotions within those eyes.
"I don't know what's going on!" He shouted while raising both hands in a harmless gesture.
Elec shoved by him and entered the classroom, his fury not erupting as he had expected.
'This is going to be a pain!' He bitterly smiled.
