RBR Chapter 21 The Lion Princess
The weeks dragged on until the term was about to come to its end. The year was separated into three periods of learning with the holidays spaced in between. And the first term was coming to an end, something that brought a serious atmosphere to the school because of one thing...
"Exams! How I dread looking at those questions!" Jet shouted in protest and frustration. They were seated in the lunch hall as always, all five of them, Leah included.
Even as Jet continued to complain, Eric was simply amazed by how far they had come, from an uneasy relationship to the best of friends.
He looked sideways at her. Her attention was on Jet's words, a pout on her small face. It seemed that she also had the same worries. She was no longer jumpy when he gazed at her, something that signified how far they had progressed from their initial meeting.
Though, there was one thing that still caused him headache. She liked to stick near him most of the time, having minimal contact with the others, a thing that constantly brought about Elec's displeasure.
"You shouldn't complain. It was all your fault for not going that extra mile of paying attention in class, or engaging in studying sessions. Eric and I are the only ones who cared enough hehehehe..." Mathew said, a smug expression on his face.
"Mathew, why wasn't I included? I also studied diligently!" Elec complained with an eye roll.
"Ah! I had forgotten about you." Mathew's expression was inviting a beating.
Eric smiled at their antics while enjoying his lunch. He had tried everything on the menu, and his favourites had already been decided. With one, being the current dish, sweet potatoes boiled with mashed groundnuts. It was very tasty, number two on his favourites. Sometimes he lamented about the fact that he couldn't choose everything.
Today, was supposed to be any other normal day, with him enjoying his meal with friends, but his expression shifted upon feeling the chill down his spine, the hairs on the back of his neck rising up.
The entire lunch hall had instantly went silent, as if none of the students even existed. Upon looking at Leah's side profile, he found that her emerald pupils had at some point become vertical slitted. The reason for all this was the thick bloodlust in the air, which had appeared at some unknown point in time, permeating the entire lunch hall like a sea of fog.
"She's here! I had thought we were going to be safe this term!" Mathew whispered, his face a white sheet of paper.
(Another one with an awakened willpower, how interesting.)
The voice echoed within his mind. Actually, the atmosphere was heavy, but he didn't feel any kind of threat to his life, so he was still nonchalant, except that Leah at his side looked like she was about to jump out of her seat and attack whoever was causing this.
"Hoh! Some interesting people seem to have appeared this year." A brazen female voice with a deep undertone echoed in the silent hall. The bloodlust receded, only to cause Eric more immense distress, beads of sweat forming in his skin. It seems that the newcomer had decided to concentrate all of it on him and the others at the table.
Leah outright jumped onto the table and glared at the person. Since his back was to the entrance, he hadn't yet seen the person, only hearing her voice.
"Please don't come here! Please don't come here! Please don't come here!" Jet repeated the mantra with an uneasy expression on his face, like he already knew that doom was coming, or inevitable.
A whisper of the wind rang through his ears, a projectile of some sort had been launched. An attack!
Eric frowned, his hand blurring for an instant, before something brown was clutched over his right shoulder. It seemed the attack hadn't been aimed to take his life, just to test something.
"Would you mind coming to the arena?"
The question, uncomfortably close caused him to leap out of his chair and turn around with such speed and delicacy, that the table behind wasn't even affected by the movement.
It had been too close, like someone had been standing right behind him and whispering in his ears. But, the reality caused his eyes to widen. She was still very far away, so how had her voice seemed to have been close. Could it be that she was faster than she seemed? The suspicion caused his eyes to shrink into needle points.
The girl was too tall for her age, somehow even taller than him. She was thin and lithe. Her body appeared to have been sculpted for speed. Wild brown hair, dropping to the tips of the ears swayed with her every step.
Those brown eyes with a black circle in the middle were currently regarding him with interest. It was so intense that he broke eye contact, deciding to scan her other features, like that small mouth with an excited grin, showing off those protruding small canines.
Those legs of hers seemed to go in forever as the skirt, barely over the knee caps, swayed with her movement.
She didn't hurry, instead taking her time as she sauntered over, for some reason, causing a feeling of unknown anticipation and excitement within his heart.

This brought upon a realisation of what he hadn't dared think about during the previous weeks, he had been bored. The virtual games had been interesting, the food delicious and the friends entertaining, but something had been missing. Something he only realised at this moment while gazing at her, excitement!
"We seem to be cut from the same cloth." She said the moment she appeared close, with a mere metre separating them. The words brought back his attention which had wondered to somewhere.
"You are certainly an interesting girl, introducing yourself with an attempt at my life." Eric countered with a grin and those words while raising his hand to show her the captured brown needle.
"That's a very bold accusation. I had clearly aimed to miss." She answered with a grin of her own.
"I was right. What did I tell you?" Someone's voice finally made him acknowledge the person next to her, the thin teen who had had an altercation with Elec sometime back, Nkyima.
"If you had been wrong, I would have dragged you to the arena myself for a match."
The girl's words caused the teen to grimace. Her words had conjured up some unpleasant memories it seems.
"Judging by the hair and the eyes, you must be from that clan, right?" Leah's voice came from behind him. She had managed to curb some of her reaction.
'Mpologoma.'
"Mpologoma."
Leah said exactly what he had in mind. It was common for someone to have the same features as this girl, but Eric was sure that he wasn't mistaken. Her ferocious nature from the get go, and the enormous pride radiating from her were the clues, unless this was all a facade.
"Miss Elena, what brings you here?" Elec stood up and asked with a sigh. Eric knew that his actions had been brought upon by the fact that none of the others could take on the task. Mathew and Jet would be ignored...probably. And Leah plus him were clueless, so he was the only one who could perform the introductions.
"Son of Baguma, I have heard of you. Though, I doubt you will be as interesting as your copy standing in front of me." She entirely dismissed him with a frown and a wave of the hand.
Elec's face took on a very dark expression, with Eric even seeing the teen clenching his hands, but ultimately, he sat down.
"That wasn't very nice of you." Eric withdrew his grin.
"I only speak the truth. In this entire school, there are very few people whom I deem interesting enough to place on the same level as myself. You should be honored to have joined the short list, the both of you." She said, her eyes also darting towards Leah.
Eric felt some anger at her words. She was way too arrogant!
"Follow me to the arena. If you turn out to be good, you might be useful to me in the future."
"Why would I listen to you?" Eric crossed his arms on his chest. The way she spoke was as if she was at a height unreachable by him and the rest.
"Seeing your current actions, I have to assume that you don't really know me, do you." Her gaze narrowed, a dangerous feeling wafting from her lithe body. Eric was given the feeling that she had become massive, easily looking down at him.
Zzzzzzt!
Electricity flared to life around his body, causing gasps to ring out and a few to take steps away from him.
'What is this? I didn't activate it?' For a moment, he forgot about his anger, puzzled at the occurrence.
(The genes of an electric eel. Your cells temporarily transformed into electrocytes)
An explanation was provided, allowing him to understand, but why wasn't it turning off?
(You will have to learn to control these innate abilities yourself.)
Eric panicked even more. If the collective wasn't going to help, then how was he going to handle this, not to mention that the girl hadn't taken a single step back in fear, instead the grin on her face had become even wider!
