Chapter 23: Vram Trail

Noises coming from below spread far throughout the safe zone. In a room, lit by the sunlight streaming through the broken windows, 3 people currently sat across from one another. 

With her fists clenched tightly, Elise lowered her head. Listening to his father's explanation, her confused expression shifted to being shocked and angry. 

Slam! 

Elise slammed her fists on the armrest; her brows knitting in disbelief as she glared at Duke Kayn. 

"I don't accept this! How can you just do that without our permission!?" 

Duke Kayn leaned on his comfy chair, savoring the wind breeze coming from behind him.

"It was his request. If I reject it, wouldn't I lose my credibility? And if people get a sniff of this, it might damage our reputation." After a soft sigh, he continued, "Look Elise, I know that what I did earlier was a little bit harsh. But, it doesn't mean that I'm wrong either."

"Then why would you—?" 

Before Elise could finish her words, Duke Kayn interrupted. 

"Look, I valued you more than you could think of, that's why. He saved your life and without him, I might never see you again. I'm grateful for his actions that's why I decided to reward him. However, If I give him a mere treasure or money, does that mean your life is only worth like that?" 

Elise glanced at Zeus who was currently holding his lips, attempting to suppress his laughter. Seeing him like this, her emotions only grew wild. 

Biting her lips, Elise looked at her father. 

"No! This doesn't count!" 

"Why? It's not bad, right?" Duke Kayn said, spreading his hands. 

"Not bad? Father, can you even hear what you're saying?! You're adopting him! He's going to become my brother! How can I not complain!?"

Elise's voice grew louder and louder. If not for the soundproof barrier installed by the Duke, many passersby would turn their heads to the house for sure. 

"Don't worry, it's temporary. Until he could find what he's finding, he'll stay on our manor as an adopted child of mine."

"He's taking advantage of you!" 

"And that's what I like, a greedy person. I even thought he'd choose money as that would be the best choice. However, he wanted us to shelter him." As soon as Duke Kayn said this, his gaze shifted towards Zeus. He continued, "Adoption. It's something I never thought of. He basically… outwitted me."

Hearing his father's words, Elise could only grit his teeth. Duke Kayn is one of the most intelligent men in the kingdom and he holds many theories that's already been proven true. 

That's only one of his many feats.

Thus, in the outside world, he's known as Sage Kayn. A man possessing wisdom above others. However, as her daughter, she knows his father more than others. 

He's a calculative man. A cunning bastard who was despised by his enemies for his unusual methods. 

Therefore, it would be a surprise if someone managed to outwit his father.

"It's alright Sister." Zeus said, adding fuel to the fire. 

"Shut up! You're not my brother." Elise exclaimed. 

Duke Kayn took a sip of his wine as he watched the two interact. A curve formed on his lips before it disappeared in a mere second. 

"Elise, you shouldn't be harsh to your brother."

"Father, just stop talking or I might just puke a mouthful of blood from your shamefulness."

"Hahahahaha, is that so? Why don't you even want him to become your brother?" Duke Kayn caressed his black beard, as he pondered for a reason. "Hmm, unless you like hi—" 

Elise immediately stood up with a flushed face. 

"No! W-why would I like him? We're just friends! I'm just uncomfortable with having another brother. That's my reason."

"That's not a valid reason for me. Anyways, let's move on. You can't change my mind anymore."

Duke Kayn stood up from his seat and tightened the tie around his neck. He took the brown undercoat hanging on a nail and wore it in front of a mirror. 

"Go back to the capital. The academy is already demanding that you go back otherwise they'll expel you." After fixing his hair together with his clothes, he turned towards Zeus before turning back at Elise. "By the way, I'm going to tour my new son somewhere so you and Ciel would be the only ones who'll go back."

"You…are really serious." In the end, Elise could only cover her head in disbelief. 

"Of course I am. I'm not the type to joke around. Ready Zeus?" 

Zeus nodded. 

Duke Kayn fetched the hat on his table before walking towards the door. Zeus followed behind him immediately. 

As Zeus approached the exit, Duke Kayn suddenly stopped and left a few words.

"One of my guards will follow you for additional safety. So please, don't run around anymore. I'll let my men get that fruit so you can advance to the Adept rank."

"Yes, father." Elise murmured. 

She understood that his father only wanted her to be safe. When she sneaked out of the manor to find the fruit that could let a Peak Novice Sorcerer to the next rank, her father met her at the foot of the mountain the next day and gave her that task. 

In order to prove herself, she, together with her friends, ventured into the mountains. However, they met Kleo and everything had gone wrong. 

But she failed. She didn't even get to advance to the next rank. 

"Very well."

Duke Kayn nodded and left the room together with Zeus

Thud—

As the door closed with a loud sound, silence pervaded the room leaving Elise in an uncomfortable solitude. 

…

Zeus followed behind the Duke outside the safe zone. Shelly was left in the pet house. An inn that serves pets' relaxation and food. Zeus checked her there and it seemed like she was doing fine. 

But she'll just probably sleep the whole day.

"We're nearing the Vram Trail entrance."Duke Kayn said. 

Zeus scanned the vicinity and he couldn't help but notice that no one seemed to be there. Aside from the knights on patrol, no adventurers could be found. 

"Vram Trail?" 

"Mm. The Beastial Mountain Peak has 3 Trails, leading to different zones. The Ayakan, Lohman, and the Vram Trail." Duke Kayn explained as they walked towards the entrance of the trail. 

"What's the difference between them?" 

"Well, monsters vary in strength in each trail. The Ayakan being the weakest and the Vram having the strongest of the monsters inside." 

"Then the one Elise and I exited earlier was the Ayakan Trail right?" 

"Yeah. It's the safest and the most used trail out of the three. Monsters around that zone are mostly 1st Orders and some 2nd Orders. On the other hand, the Lohman Trail houses 2nd Order to 4th Order Monsters. Both trails could be dangerous if you're not professional or accompanied by a strong guard." 

Listening to the Duke's explanation, Zeus nodded.

"How about the Vram Trail?" 

"Well, it's one of the most dangerous zones not only in the kingdom but also in the whole world. As of now, we don't know how strong the monsters living inside but it should be 5th Orders and above." 

"Although I don't know much about the ranks, how powerful is a 5th Order Monster?

"Powerful enough to destroy a large town." Duke Kayn sighed and continued, "The Vram Trail certainly houses more powerful existences than that. That's why this zone is also one of the forbidden places in the world." 

Soon, they appeared in a deserted area, devoid of life. Ahead, a wide path could be seen with a sign on its entrance saying 'Vram Trail.'

'This!' 

The moment they arrived there, Zeus already felt tingles on his skin. 

Just by standing at the entrance alone, cold sweats oozed out of his forehead. He wiped it with his hands but it kept on falling to his cheeks. 

'Terrible.'

The eerie winds and gloomy atmosphere crawled on his skin, sending cold shivers down his spine. 

"Are we going inside?" Zeus asked as he gulped his saliva nervously. 

"You said you wanted to awaken you aether right? On this trail, there's a breaker you can use."

"But isn't this dangerous?" 

"Indeed but isn't this what you wanted? To awaken in 7 days? You can still back out and use the breaker in the academy but the session already ended yesterday. As the schedule goes, the next one would be 9 days from now."

"I see. I'll just pick this way then." Zeus said helplessly.

Fortunately, he found a loophole. 

He already told the Duke that he's already at the right age. As he knew that a man like him could detect a lie, he told him that he was 'already more than 14 years old.'

He's not really lying when he said that as he was a grown man in his previous life. Although he wasn't certain if it would work, from the looks of it, it sure did. 

In their 3 day journey, Elise also promised not to tell anyone his real age. 

"Don't worry, you're part of the Ambrose House now. I'm not going to let you die here. Even if you die, I'll just kill the one who kills you." Duke Kayn assured him. 

Hearing the Duke's words, Zeus' mouth twitched. 

"That's quite the assurance."

"Well, if you're ready, let's go." 

"Mm." 

Duke Kayn led the charge. 

After taking a deep breath and firming his will, Zeus trudged forward and followed behind.
