Zeus' pupils shrunk. His instinct screamed danger. Subconsciously, he leaped to the side barely evading the incoming attack but the walls behind him weren't lucky.

Boom—!

The attack smashed the walls and cracked the stone ceiling. Zeus hurriedly stood up and yelled at the giant bird.

"I'm sorry! I didn't mean to!"

[Human! I told you not to come here but you won't listen! You'll pay for your actions!]

The bird charged another attack.

'Shit!'

Zeus attempted to move away but before he could do so, he bumped into a hard wall.

Thud—!

He fell to his butt and supported himself back up again. However, the attack had already come his way.

'I'm getting hit!!!'

Having no way out, Zeus closed his eyes and waited for his death.

'Am I going to die again?'

But after waiting for a few seconds, the assault did not arrive.

Instead, the bird wheezed out aggressively as if it had a terrible cold.

[Cough—! cough—!]

Zeus opened his eyes, and scanned his surroundings, making sure that everything was fine. He glanced at the large pupils of the bird which seemed to be losing its light as time passed by.

Drip—, drip—

His ears also caught the sound of something similar to water leaking in a faucet.

'It should be blood. Looks like her injuries were much more fatal than I thought. But how can she be injured seriously like that? The beasts outside don't look strong enough to deal with her.'

Although bewildered, Zeus temporarily tossed his thoughts away to the back of his mind.

The bird coughed out more blood and her eyes fluttered time and time again.

Though she was injured, her eyes never left him. He discovered that she was hesitant to kill him but she probably couldn't move from her spot right now.

"You're dying." Zeus blurted out. In a surprise, he hurriedly covered his mouth for fear of angering the mother bird.

[I… am.]

Zeus felt sorry for the bird. Because he knew better than anyone about the love a mother had for their child.

She wouldn't hesitate to protect them as if they were even more precious than their very own lives.

As he looked at the bird, it reminded him of his previous life. Her mother always worried about him despite his work not being that much hazardous.

Even when she's sick, she's still worried about him paying money to buy medicines so she would just keep it hidden until he discovered it.

Zeus wanted to help.

"Do you need any help?"

However, to his surprise, the bird didn't respond. Her eyes just stared at him as if she'd kill him the second he made a wrong move.

"Uhm, do you want me to get water, I could…"

He tried to persuade the bird several times but he still received no answers. Zeus narrowed his eyes and focused on the bird's pupils.

For some reason, he was troubled by the fact that it was just glaring at him.

At that moment,

Caw—! Caw—! Caw—!

The bird's child chirped more loudly than before. Its cries echoed throughout the cave.

'She is…'

It was so at this moment that Zeus realized what was happening.

'She's dead.'

The mother bird already died.

She died protecting the child beside her and even in her death, her eyes never left the potential harm, which was Zeus.

She's truly a wonderful mother.

Zeus lowered his head and chuckled softly. He didn't want to admit it but he was really sad about the death of the mother bird.

If he could save her, he wouldn't even hesitate but unfortunately, he's powerless to do anything.

As he raised his eyes, he saw the mother bird's eyes looking at him as if saying something. Puzzled, Zeus walked towards it and suddenly felt that he kicked a feathery thing.

It's the bird's child.

He looked at the mother bird and realized. "I see… Do you want me to take him?"

As if agreeing to his words, a tear fell from the bird's eyes before she closed her eyes.

It was permission.

"Please rest assured that I'll take him to safety. Although I may not look like it, I'm a man of my words. May you rest in peace." Zeus bowed towards her and sent his prayers.

For him, not all beasts were ferocious. Just like humans, they have emotions as well. Zeus picked up the child bird and carefully pulled him away from his mother.

Caw—! Caw—!

Although he wished he could stay longer, it wasn't just possible anymore. The stench of blood in the surroundings was far too strong. It would be a miracle if no beasts get a sniff of it.

Hence, he needed to leave as soon as possible.

"Little guy, let's go."

Zeus turned around and rushed towards the exit. He didn't know if it was luck but he somehow managed to evade the risky paths that could make him trip.

The light ahead got stronger.

His body throbbed wildly and anxiousness washed over his face.

And as expected as soon as he reached the cave's exit, his feet came to a halt. Silence permeated the vicinity. Zeus desperately stopped his breathing trying not to get noticed by the giant beast feasting on the bodies around.

Chomp—, chomp—

The beast that looks like a hyena stood at 4 meters tall. It has a large head with a long, thick muscular neck. Its jaws were wide enough to swallow him in one bite.

Zeus stepped back cautiously; his legs trembled in sheer fright.

Tap—!

However, his foot kicked the rubble lying on the ground which was enough to be heard by that carnivorous animal.

'Shit!'

The hyena shifted its gaze to Zeus and its eyes gleamed in delight. It's as if it was happy after seeing another prey alive and well.

Gulp—

Zeus swallowed his saliva and gripped the ax tightly in his hand. Thick green veins popped out of his forearm as if they might burst anytime.

He regretted coming here. No, rather he regretted not leaving sooner.

If he left a few minutes ago, he could have avoided this timely misfortune. Unfortunately, there's no room for regrets anymore as the hyena already roared in excitement.

Roar—!

The air seemingly trembled. The shockwaves decimated everything around it.

'I can't fight it. I won't even last a second.' Zeus concluded.

Hence, the only option is to run away.

Without looking back, Zeus sprinted as fast as he could. He could sense the malice coming behind him but based on the sound, it seemed like the hyena just watched him escape away.

However, he could feel that his body was already locked on. Even though the chance of surviving is slim, he still puts effort rather than not.

Rustle—, rustle—

Zeus' body charged against the sea of bushes. Although his strength wasn't an abnormal one in this world, if it was placed back on Earth, he should be at the upper-class strength now.

He ran for a few minutes, jumping, climbing, and descending every nook of the jungle. Like a professional parkour, he shuttled around obstacles without fear of falling.

However, as time passed by, it was getting harder to breathe. He panted heavily but fortunately, the adrenaline rush kept him from feeling exhausted. It's like his body was pushing its own limits and he just had to follow what it wanted to do.

Despite his legs trembling, he kept moving forward. Just when he was about to lose his sense of direction, his ears perked up.

Splash—, splash—

'What was that sound?'

Zeus halted momentarily and listened to the soundwaves coming from his left.

Splash—, splash—

1 second…

2 seconds…

10 seconds…

His eyes brightened.

'Water!!!'

The sound of water falling from a cliff. This should be the source and it's near here. Zeus hurriedly ran in its direction but he shuddered when he felt a strong gust of wind coming from his back.

"Damn it, run Zeus, run!!!" he winced in pain. His legs were slowly failing but the cliff was just ahead.

20 meters…

15 meters…

5 meters…

1 meter…

As soon as he reached the cliff, Zeus didn't hesitate anymore. He released the bird and he jumped.

He jumped higher than he could ever do.

Whoosh—!

The hyena behind him opened its jaws but fell a little short as Zeus was already in mid-air. All it could do was growl in frustration.

Roar!!!

As for Zeus, his body landed on the waterfalls.

Splash—!

The impact broke some of his bones. Fortunately, he knew how to swim and in just a few more seconds, his small head popped out of the water.

Splash—

"Cough! Cough! Argh!! Fuck!"

Zeus clutched his shoulder and felt a tearing pain coming from his armpit down to the elbow. He raised his head and stared at the hyena overlooking everything from above.

At that moment, he burst into joy.

"Hahahaha!!! I'm alive!!!"

Despite the injuries he received, what matters to him is he survived.

Tears welled up in his eyes. The joy of being alive once again sent him to euphoria momentarily. Zeus swam off the shore and lay comfortably on a flat boulder.

Pant—, pant—

The adrenaline cooled off and a burst of exhaustion washed over his body.

He's tired. His eye lids felt heavy.

Fortunately, he's safe now. The crisis was already solved. Of course, he didn't forget to raise his middle finger towards the hyena.

"Better luck next time, bud."

He was about to close his eyes when a sudden thought entered his head.

'Wait, can hyenas swim?'

Surely, they can't, right?
