Chapter 41: Unexpected

As soon as their combined attacks drove in front of Robert, a mighty purple energy exploded outside his body, blasting their attacks together with their bodies away. 

A gust of wind twirled like a tornado and both Khan and Zeus were blown up and crashed into the ground. Fortunately, it wasn't enough to make them injured. However, their guards immediately shot through the roof, knowing that Robert cast an ability. 

Zeus dragged himself up and glared at Robert. 

'What is that?' 

The aether around the surroundings was sucked by this purple energy circled around Robert. Although Zeus couldn't recognize it, the ominous energy shouldn't be a good thing. 

Khan and Zeus didn't hesitate and took advantage of Robert's lack of attention. But, as soon as their attacks attempted to bypass this purple energy, it suddenly turned into a shield, preventing their attacks from reaching the target. 

"What is this?" Khan asked with a solemn gaze. He was familiar with curses and this one was surely leagues above what he previously encountered. 

Robert closed his eyes, feeling the burst of power coursing through his veins. As he opened it, his pupils turned purple. 

"So this was the technique huh?" Robert waved his hands and the purple shield around him changed into various weapons. "Hahahaha, but it's not complete. I need them." 

At that moment, Robert's eyes turned to the frightened villagers shivering down the ground. Then, his gaze shifted towards Khan and Zeus. 

"It's the power bestowed upon me. You don't have the right to know it." Robert snorted. 

He could feel it. These two adventurers wouldn't be able to bypass this energy as long as he blocked it.

Which also means, he's invincible as long as he's inside. 

Hearing Robert's words, Khan's expression crumbled even more. With his familiarity with curse spells, he knew how it works. He didn't even want to think about it for fear of it actually happening. 

However, despite his fears, he mustered all his courage and asked. 

"Just what did you sacrifice?"

Taken aback, Zeus alternated his gaze between Robert and Khan. Now he knows why at the mention of curse spells, Khan's face showed discomfort. 

'Curse spell requires sacrifice huh.' 

It was stated that curse spells were a branch of the Darkness Element which was also the element affinity of Duke Kayn. Together with its other branch, the Shadow Element, the Darkness Element was hailed to be the strongest out of the 4 Cardinal elements.

'If so did he sacrifice his life force or…' Zeus' eyes narrowed. 

"Isn't it obvious?" Robert smiled mysteriously. 

At the same time, the villagers release painful cries as they clutched their necks due to their sudden loss of oxygen. 

"W-what's happening!!! I…I can't breathe!!!" 

"H-help! Ahhhh, guaaaahhhkk!!" 

"Connie, w-wake up!! Ahhh!!" 

Slowly, their bodies began to shrink as if their blood was being swallowed. Their faces wrinkled at a rapid pace and soon, everyone appeared like a malnourished person, be it children or the elderly. 

At that moment. 

Thud, thud, thud—

One by one, their body system collapsed and everyone slumped into the damp soil with their bodies seemingly hollowed out of strength. Khan and Zeus hurriedly gazed at the scene with horror in their eyes.

It was a horrifying nightmare. 

"It can't be…" Khan's face crumbled as he stood there with his fingernails and bit his palms. Rage flowed through him like magma that was about to erupt. 

However, before he could even move, a hand grabbed his elbows. 

"Khan, don't let your rage take over you." Zeus said. "Calm down."

Hearing this, Khan bared his teeth. Without having anyone to vent, he grabbed Zeus' collar and stared him down like a mad beast. 

"Calm down!? Haha." Khan chuckled as he looked at the corpses piled behind them. 

"Please." 

"How can I calm down!? The villagers are dead and we won't be able to save them anymore! And now you're telling me to calm down?" 

Khan's words were raging like fire. He's furious. Zeus was aware of that. But, with the suspect still alive and kicking, their minds should be focused so they could think rationally. 

Of course, he's mad too but he learned to control his emotions. If not for his control, Zeus might have already charged at Robert recklessly.

"Look at you two bickering as if I don't exist. The dead can't be turned back around anymore. What's the point of arguing over such pointless things?" Robert provoked. 

Hearing this, both Zeus and Khan glared at him. Their eyes were burning as if looking at a dead man. 

"Mm, that's scary." Robert prepared himself as he sensed the change in atmosphere.

"Don't think about dying a painless death, Robert." Zeus stated coldly. 

Lightning crackled not only coating his weapon, but also his body. At the same time, Khan's eyes turned blood red. 

"I'm not afraid of you two now." Robert grinned confidently. 

Zeus signaled Khan with a light nod. Then, as if they were in a tacit understanding, both of them attack at the same pace. 

Swish! 

Swish! 

Two flashes, one golden and one red dashed towards Robert in an instant. Both carried an overbearing force to each of their attacks. 

"Hahaha, stupid fools." Robert grinned as he manipulated the shield to guard all around his body. 

Clang! 

Shortly afterwards, their attacks clashed with the energy shield, sweeping the area in a powerful shockwave. 

Wooosh! 

"It's hard."

The shield didn't budge. However, instead of retreating, Zeus and Khan kept hitting it. 

Boom! Boom! 

Knowing that hitting the sides won't do damage, Zeus leaped upwards and slammed his weapon down.

"Haaah!" 

Bang!

The shield remained intact. In a split second, Zeus immediately retreated after Robert conjured several energy spears aimed through his vitals. 

'It was softer.' Zeus' eyes sharpened, looking at the energy dome, blocking all of their attacks. To be precise, he's looking at the top side of the dome in which the concentration of these energies was scarce. 

'Or maybe it's just a coincidence?' Zeus said inwardly. He didn't follow up and waited for Khan to retreat first. 

Meanwhile…

"Ah! Robert!!!!" Khan roared wildly unlike the calm temperament he used to show. 

Bang, bang, bang!

Sparks fluctuated between every hit due to friction. Even so, Robert remained unfazed. His confidence in his shield is too high and he didn't think that these two adventurers could break it. 

"Even if you two hit this for a day, it won't break." Robert smiled and continued, "Although my plan was foiled, I can just start over again."

A few minutes passed in a flash, Khan managed to regain his clarity and he eventually retreated to the rear beside Zeus. It's not because they're exhausted but rather, because Robert could manipulate this energy shield into a different shape whenever he wanted, making it impossible to hit him. 

Moreover, in random intervals, Robert counterattacked which increased the difficulty of fighting him by one level. 

Unless they could break that shield or bypass it, they wouldn't be able to defeat him. 

"Khan, we have to time it. A simultaneous attack." Zeus whispered.

"A pincer?" Khan murmured. 

"Yeah, he could only defend what he sees. Although his shield guards his whole body all around, most of the energies were concentrated to where he could see it."

"So that means you're attacking  the right and I'll go to the left?" Khan asked to confirm. 

Zeus shook his head. "No, I'm going to take him by surprise while you try to attract all his attention. He knows your threats are far stronger than mine so he'll probably put most of his attention on you."

"I see." Khan nodded. If Zeus really thinks it'll work, then he'll try his best. He's not a good tactician but Zeus' plan was a good idea. He knows that at least. 

"Hopefully, it will work." Khan knows how difficult it was to bypass that shield. If this plan failed, they would be back to square one. 

The two glanced back at Robert with a determined expression etched on their faces. 

"Are you done discussing how to kill me?" Robert sneered as if mocking their plans.

Inside this shield, he's invincible so what's the fuss? Of course, he didn't let his guard down. However, no matter how much planning they do, it's futile. 

"Go!" Zeus ordered. Khan nodded as he sprinted to the left while Zeus went in the opposite direction. 

Robert tensed. He moved backwards, throwing energy attacks toward the approaching figures while also keeping half of his shield just in case. 

At that moment. 

Zeus flashed like a lightning bolt, appearing instantly near Robert.

Swish!

However, instead of attacking, he ran behind him. Robert followed Zeus with his eyes and activated his shield before turning his gaze at Khan who would soon attack. Without hesitation, Robert enveloped a shield around him. 

"Nice try." He smiled though there was a hint of mockery on his face. 

Khan's aether-coated fist collided with the shield.

Bang!

"It's futile! Die!" Robert conjured energy spikes and they charged toward Khan. 

Unfortunately, he failed to recognize the threat behind him. 

'Got him!' 

Seeing Robert underestimated him. Zeus used this trait and leaped atop Robert's head while his attention was occupied by Khan. 

Adrenaline pumped blood into his body twice faster than ever before. Zeus' arms tightened and thick veins bulged around his muscles. 

Three different powers slithered around his staff, coating it with unprecedented power. Unbeknownst to him, another colorless energy wrapped around his weapon. 

Shu!

After the staff that was covered by aether, [Enhance], and [Lightning], he raised his weapon above his head. 

Then, using all of his might, Zeus swung it down. 

Slam!!! 

 

Like fragile glass, the dome shattered into pieces. 

Bang!!! 

Robert felt the threat above him but unfortunately, it was too late. The staff already broke through his defense and hammered him down to the cold ground. 

Rumble! 

The ground under Robert shattered by a few centimeters and the surging force plunged him deep into the earth. 

"How did you—!?" Robert roared. He was horrified. Zeus bypassed his shield effortlessly only using his weapon. 

Such power, he had only seen it once!

'Aura!' 

This adventurer, how old is he!? 

That is the power only those who have broken through their limits over and over again possess. Unfortunately, his questions would remain unanswered forever. 

Whoosh! 

A powerful shockwave swept through the surroundings, sending nearby rubbles flying into the air. 

At the same time, a mechanical voice rang in his mind.

It didn't end there.

Zeus opened his mouth in surprise.

"What?!"
