Chapter 82: Extract

Once the dust was completely gone Leo got a good look at the four agents.

They were wearing a class-D jumpsuit and had both their hands and legs cuffed, ensuring that they could not properly move.

"Artemis, is it?" said one of the voices.

 

 

 

He slowly shuffled out of the bearcat and Leo got a close look at the man.

Three other agents followed him, signaling that he was the leader.

He was a blonde man who was quite skinny, definitely not what you would expect from an MC&D agent.

 

 

 

One of the female agents had black hair and freckles on her face, there also was another man who was bald and looked alot more sturdy than Tallis.

Finally, there was one more female agent, she was a lot more noticeable.

She had brown hair, but something else was more noticeable.

The left side of her face was deformed a bit, with a lot of scars.

 

 

 

They were old burn scars, comparable with third-degree burns.

Leo had treated burn scars before, but he instantly noticed that it was beyond repair for the woman.

The burn mark stretched from her lower jaw all the way up to her eyelid, where it promptly stopped.

 

 

 

"Let's go Tallis, we don't have all day." responded Artemis quickly.

Crawler followed up on the statement from Artemis.

"Foundation backup will arrive soon, let's go."

"Mate do you think me and my agents will be able to go anywhere with these restraints?" retorted Tallis.

 

 

 

Artemis sighed before walking up to Tallis and taking his gun out, aiming it at his hand restraints.

He made sure that he stood in a place where the bullet would not ricochet back to him or any of the agents before letting out the shot.

 

 

 

Artemis was surprised when the hand restraints were still there, with little more than a scratch on them.

However, Tallis quickly cleared the situation up.

"I already expected this, these restraints are most likely made with a special metal compound, they are highly resistant to bullets."

 

 

 

A short silence was in place until it was broken by Pirate.

"So, what now Artemis?"

"We will have to carry them to extract, not a lot else we can do about our current situation."

Tallis quickly jumped in.

"In that case let me introduce my agents briefly. You obviously know my codename from your report, the woman with black hair is Merlin, baldy over there is known as Whistler, and our final lady is known as Banshee."

Artemis was quick to respond.

"Right, now let's go. Tallis I will carry you, Pirate you will carry Whistler as he is heavier, Crawler you can take Merlin and Leo will take Banshee. Extract will arrive within 30 minutes, so we will have to hurry up as we will have to walk up a hill."

Everyone was ready to depart but Whistler was protesting against Artemis.

 

 

 

"Artemis was it? You can't honestly expect a fragile little lady to carry me all the way to extract, wouldn't it be smarter to swap me out with one of your guys?"

Artemis didn't respond and simply nodded towards Pirate, who proceeded to easily lift Whistler and put him in a fireman carry position.

In the meantime, Whistler kept complaining.

"You won't be able to keep this up, you will get hurt! you should..."

 

 

 

Whistler kept on going but Pirate was simply ignoring him.

Leo quickly followed Pirate's example and lifted Banshee onto his shoulder as well.

Leo noticed that during this entire interaction Banshee hadn't said a word against anyone, but he didn't comment on it.

 

 

 

"Alright, team! Let's get moving!" yelled out Artemis.

Everyone started marching and followed Artemis out of the tunnel.

Leo took one last look around the tunnel before leaving it.

 

 

 

It was a mess, there were corpses everywhere and a stench of iron hung around in the air.

Leo as quite glad that he could get to leave the tunnel.

Artemis stepped over the guardrail and started moving into the forest.

 

 

 

It was still really dark but he had handed Tallis a flashlight, which illuminated the way forward.

Leo had noticed that carrying Banshee on his back was getting harder as they were walking uphill, but he didn't comment on it.

Instead, he attempted to strike up a conversation with Banshee.

 

 

 

"So, what is your real name, Banshee?"

Total silence followed.

"I know that you are not allowed to tell as we are technically still on a mission, but we are in the middle of a forest. No one would be listening in on us here."

Silence followed again and after a while there was a response, but not from Banshee.

 

 

 

"Spare yourself the effort lad, Banshee rarely talks."
