My shift at work had just ended, another day of cashing customers out at a chain supermarket. As with any other day of work I made my way to my car and hoped that my old beat up car would start. Unlike my coworkers I didn't have the luxury of heating, and given the cold weather of upstate New York this time of year my car was positively frigid. After some few attempts of turning the engine on, my car sputtered to life, the smell of gasoline was rich in the air, the exhaust fumes leaked through several holes. The parking lot was icy, not allowing for much traction from my tires as I started making my way home, I had to clench my jaw as I pulled onto the highway, partly due to stress, but mainly to stop my teeth from chittering from the cold. The snow picked up it's assault on the road and my visibility, and foolishly I had increased my speed, eager to get home and log in to an MMORPG, the only form of escape I could afford. It came out of nowhere, a large deer suddenly in my lane. I swerved, losing control of the steering wheel. My car went off road, missing the last portion of guard rail and down a hill. The treeline rapidly approached before what was at first the blinding white of snow in headlights turned to black.

"Your recounting of your demise is quite accurate." A voice, disconnected from reality informed me.

"Well, I suppose you can keep these memories. Your game knowledge is also fine and will aid you in your new life."

Confused, I tried to speak, yet no words came out. The voice seemed to understand my meaning of "New life? What are you talking about? Am I dead?"

"To answer your first and last questions, yes. And to the other question, as you have unfortunately met an untimely end, and a family in another world has just conceived, you are being 'reassigned' to that world. You have a strong desire to escape the daily monotony of life here on Earth, and this new life will be much more to your liking."

An aura of calm washed over my soul. Analytically I realized I should be anything but calm. I died. I'm leaving behind my life and relationships on Earth. All because I... What relationships did I have? I vaguely remember having a family but their memories are evading me.

"There. Your memories are altered. You may feel some voids of lost memories as you grow older. Good luck in your new life, and try to raise your levels early in life. It's a dangerous world." The voice faded to nothingness as it finished speaking.

The world slowly faded into existence, a warm, cramped and dark existence, but it was better than the void. Some time had passed and I acknowledged that I was in a womb, ready to be born as my confines got more claustrophobic and uncomfortable. I had been plucked from my old life and given a chance to start over. I excitedly navigated my confines much to my mother's chagrin.

I felt a popping sensation and before long I saw light again, trying not to think about where I had just emerged from. People stared at me and spoke in an unfamiliar language, undoubtedly wondering why I hadn't made a noise.
