"I'll give you a few books to read that will help you learn." King Rian changed the subject abruptly, as though he was not the one who had been interrogating her a moment ago.

She was glad to ditch the interrogation so she had nothing to complain about. "Alright."

He stood to leave. Before she could let out the breath she had been holding, he stopped and traced the back of his forefinger down the side of her face. "One thing you must remember, my dear Jasmine, is that you will never get away with anything in the realm of immortals. No matter how tiny you think your mistake is, you have to be punished for it."

"I understand." She thought back to all the times she had gone to the human realm. Was he implying that he would punish her for those too?

….

As promised, a little bird sent by King Rian carried a bag of books to Dairon's mansion that evening. She was in her room when it arrived so she quickly opened the window to let it in, and took the books from it.

"How did you manage to carry such heavy books on your claws?" She felt their weight and concluded that the little birds must be stronger than they looked.

As if she had just praised it, the red bird chirped happily and rested on her pillow.

Her heart melted. "Wait here. I'll get you a snack."

She went to the kitchen and brought grains of wheat in a bowl. When she set them before the bird, it merely gave it a glance and didn't eat even when she dipped its beak into the bowl. However, when she scooped a little of the grain into her hand, the bird pecked them all from her palm and looked like it would be glad if she gave it more.

She smiled at its peculiar preference and fed it more grain from her palm. She had the urge to pat its feathers so she did. "Good girl. You should probably go back to your master or he will think you are starting to laze around."

She let the bird leave and watched it fly away, feeling like a part of her was flying off along with it. She had not fed it to bribe it as she joked to King Rian; she felt an unfamiliar fondness towards it.

Since when did she start to pet birds? That was something that Dairon liked doing?

It was strange now that she thought about it. A demon petting birds… It was strange yet so beautiful.

After returning the empty bowl to the kitchen, she sat on her bed and opened the bag to inspect its contents. The largest book was the book of the law of the realm of immortals. That was expected.

She glanced at the second one and rolled her eyes. Laws of the human realm. When she glanced through the rest, she didn't understand how they were related to her learning the language of the gods. They were all books of laws governing different realms, including the underworld.

How he got access to the underworld rules was one thing; why was he sending her this kind of books? There was a note attached to the last book. She pulled it and found that it was written in the language of gods.

[It's rude to learn the language of any place without knowing its rules. Let's start over.

Your grandfather, Rian.]

She crumbled the letter into a ball in disgust. Who set that crappy rule? And since when did she have a grandfather?

"No thanks." She threw it aside, only for it to spring back into the straight sheet of paper or was before getting crumbled. She picked it up to inspect it. It was smooth and of a much better quality than human realm stationery. If she was allowed to pay her family a visit any time soon, she would bring some with her for Dahlia.

A knock resounded on the door and Dairon peeked in. "May I come in?"

"Of course." She shuffled out of bed and into his arms. She had missed him even though it had just been a few hours since they parted ways.

"What are you doing?" He asked curiously when he saw all the books on her bed.

"That, King Rian thought it was fun to send me rules about all the realms." She pointed at the books on her bed. "I wonder how many immortal realm rules I have broken already."

"Probably a hundred." He teased and made the book about the underworld rules levitate to him, then he opened it.

"It's forbidden for demons to go to any of the realms of the living without getting permission from the King of the underworld." He scoffed at the ridiculous rule.

"Does Ulke know that you—as Dairon—are a demon?" She asked.

"He does."

"Yet he doesn't try to punish you for disobeying the rules even though you hate each other so much?" She blinked in confusion.

"No one's as twisted as Ulke. I bet he doesn't even know the rules he set himself." He snorted in ridicule and dumped the book back onto her bed.

"Would you like to take a walk? The sea looks especially beautiful this evening." He offered a hand.

"I'd love to." She patted her head when she remembered that she had changed into comfortable indoor clothes that didn't look appealing to go out in, and her hair was a mess. "Could you give me five minutes? I'll get changed and join you."

"You look beautiful this way." He said with a straight face.

She knew that he meant it. He would probably ogle at her even if she draped on a floor rug but it was for this exact reason that she couldn't listen to him.

She grabbed a hair brush and realised that he didn't have any intention to leave.

"Could you wait for me outside?" She gathered her courage to ask, her face flushing even though there was nothing wrong with what she had just asked.

"Just ignore me." He sat on her bed. Although he had asked to be ignored, he did nothing to make his presence unnoticeable. How could she ignore him when he was staring at her like that? She could feel her gaze even with her back turned towards him.

She swallowed a gulp and contemplated changing in the bathroom. When her eyes darted towards the walls, she realized that it was useless. He could see everything without using any effort.

She hugged her hairbrush to her chest. Did it matter? He would be her husband in the future. He would see her body sooner or later, she might as well get used to it.

Thinking it was one thing but when she reached behind her back to unzip her dress, her skin felt hot even though all he did was watch her. She pulled down the zipper and slid the dress over her shoulders. It was loose fitting so it dropped to the floor in a pile as soon as she let go of it.

Heat crawled up her skin as she felt his gaze on her turn fiery. She was standing with her back to him in just her underwear.

She hesitantly tilted her head to glance at him, too embarrassed to change out of her underwear under his watchful gaze. She was puzzled to see that he was no longer on the bed but that only lasted a few seconds. His hands were on her shoulders in the next second.

He kissed her back as he slid the straps of her underwear down her shoulders.

"Dairon, our walk," She bit out as his fingers trailed down her body.

"Can wait." He pulled her to turn around and face him. He straightened up and cupped her face. "You're so lovely, flower," He breathed.

She placed a hand on his shoulder which cupped into a fist.

His hands stopped at her waist, pulling her against him. He looked into her eyes as he glided his hands down her backside and her eyes instinctively shut.

"No, look at me." He whispered.

His lips took hers as soon as she looked up. One hand came to her neck and held her in place as he kissed her. She hugged his shoulders for support as her knees felt weak.

He let go of her out of the blue. She was about to ask what happened when he turned to leave. She instantly understood it. His fangs were out.

She grabbed his arm.

"Don't look at me." He pleaded. "They're ugly."

He had never striked her as the kind to be insecure about his appearance, so much that he was nervous even though she had already assured him that she loved every part of him.

"Dairon," She placed her palm on his back. "I already told you that you are beautiful. This includes every part of you. If the demon side of you wants to show up and enjoy the moment then let him.. I don't need you to restrain him."
