Nemu and Trewy wandered senselessly through the forest. Well, they had a goal, but as with the rabbit tribe, they couldn't find it. For the rabbit tribe there was a map, however, this time there was nothing but an approximate point the elder of the rabbit tribe showed them. There aren't any known maps that show the existence of the slime cave. And it wasn't surprising. They were deep in the forest. Hours passed and even with Nemu's magical perception, they still hadn't found any slime. There was another reason for this. In this part of the forest, the trees were very dense. That made it impossible to rely only on sight.
"Are you sure it's here?" Trewy asked impatiently.
Nemu sighed. She was right. Even though they hadn't been there long, they didn't know if this was the right area. The elder said there would be a cave with slimes. But maybe the slimes are long gone? They should have asked when the last person was at the cave.
As before, Nemu used his Detective skill all the time, but even with it he couldn't find any traces of slimes. He had already used his Waterjet skill for scouting, but by now the water in his dimensional space was running low, so he couldn't rely on that either.
"Maybe we should wait until night." Said Nemu. He looked at a large and old tree. The canopy of the younger trees already towered over it. And so the old tree got no more sunlight and by now even the leaves had fallen off. The way of life.
"Why until night?" Asked Trewy, so far they had always walked only during the day, so she did not understand why they should search at night. She was now standing in front of the same tree. And probably had the same thoughts as Nemu as she gently placed her hand on the old tree trunk. She let her natural energy flow into the tree. Calm and steady. At first, there was no change. But then the tree got its old color back. The crumbling bark of the tree became stronger again. And the tree grew, further and further. Until it reached the treetops and new leaves grew on the branches. After a while, one of the leaves slowly fell to the ground, as if the tree was thanking them.
"Slimes often move only at night. It's like a natural instinct for blue slimes." He said after watching Trewy in fascination for a while. Without a doubt, Trewy grew stronger. Just like the old tree, filled with new energy.
Then the tree dropped another leaf. And then another, until the leaves slowly pointed in one direction. Did the tree want to show them the direction?
"Let's go that way." Trewy said while looking at the fallen leaves on the hard ground. There wasn't a single plant growing because of the missing sunlight. A sight they have seen very often in the forest.
"Yes." Nemu agreed. He had never seen Trewy do anything like that, he wasn't even sure if she had intended it.
After they left the place, a soft breeze blew through the forest, taking the fallen leaves of the old tree with it.
It was only after an hour when Nemu suddenly stopped. Trewy looked at him, that could only mean one thing. He had found something.
"Is it the slime cave?" Trewy now asked. It could be a lot. A monster, a barrier again, maybe a group of humans or a tribe of one of the species from the forest. There was no information about tribes in this part of the forest, but it still wouldn't be surprising since there are countless tribes in the Jura Forest that had no contact with the outside world. Many of them did not want to. Trewy and Nemu couldn't blame them, after they saw what happened to the Rabbit Tribe, maybe a life in solitude wasn't bad at all. Or a life in solitude is better than no life at all?
"I think so." He said after a pause. "But something is wrong."
Trewy sighed. Couldn't they just once arrive somewhere where everyone lived peacefully and happily together? But no, something had to be wrong all the time. She suspected something bad.
"Is it dangerous?" Well, actually everything in this forest can be dangerous one way or another. They both knew that.
That was the reason why Nemu did not answer. Nemu had been using his Detective skill for a while. But it puzzled him that there was no sign of slime. Slimes don't really stay in one place. Sometimes they gather in groups, like a pack, but their whole purpose in life is to hop through the forest. This was also the reason why he found it suspicious since the elder told him about the slime cave. Actually, if it was just red slime, he would have understood. Many red slimes never leave their cave and when they gather, it makes sense.
But with blue slimes it's different, they don't hide, during the day they are less active and sometimes they just wait as if they have no energy left, but at night they are active and never stay in one place. And he really wanted to find out the reason for that. After all, that's his job as an adventurer. So when he said something was wrong he didn't necessarily mean it was something bad, even though in his experience it probably is, it just felt.... wrong.
"Let's keep moving." Said Nemu while still keeping his magical perception focused on their target.
Trewy nodded.
As they moved on, Nemu became more and more aware of what was going on. There were blue slimes. Lots of blue slimes. At first he thought there were about a dozen, but he was wrong, when they were about to see the entrance of the slime cave he could already sense 50 of them.
The elder said he had also seen red slimes there. And by now, Nemu should feel them. After he got his name, his magical perception became much better. At that time he could use it with a radius of about 50 meters, but now it was a whole kilometer. But he still could not perceive red slime. So either there were no more red slimes there, which was not unlikely, since all slimes split after a while, or.... there was something that disturbed his perception. He wasn't sure what he would prefer, he really wanted to meet other red slimes, but if there is something that disturbs his magical senses, it would cause them trouble for sure.
When they were almost in sight, he felt something as if someone was calling to him. Something wanted to communicate. But it was only very faint and... as if it was being disturbed.
'Hello?’ He tried answering. Sending a message by telepathy to the surroundings. Red slimes should be able to sense it.

'... run.' Said a voice in Nemus' mind before he couldn't perceive anything. Whatever was there, now it was gone. And any further attempts were useless.
"Run?" Said Nemu aloud. He was sure now, whatever was in front of them was probably dangerous. And it was probably in the cave.
"What do you mean?" Asked Trewy, raising her brow and already expecting that something not so good happened.
"There was a voice. And the voice said run." Said Nemu while he was in deep thought. He will not run away, that much was clear. And since the voice could answer by telepathy, it most likely belonged to a red slime. No, there was no doubt about it. There were red slimes in the cave. Even without the certainty, of course, he would not have run away. But now he was even more sure. He had made it his mission to rescue red slimes and bring them to Tempest, and he certainly wasn't going to give up on that. And again, he cursed himself for not being stronger.
"So it's trouble again." Trewy said and shrugged. She knew, of course, that Nemu would not leave. And she was no different. Her job was to protect the forest and that included all the inhabitants.
"Let's go. Whatever's there, it's in the cave, outside there are just slimes." Nemu said and Trewy nodded.
When they were finally close to the cave they saw that it was on a clearing. The entrance was on the side of a small hill, with no trees around. They had seen such a clearing before. But this time it was different. There weren't any spirits. And the missing trees... There were supposed to be trees. There were even small holes on the ground, like someone ripped the trees, including their roots from the ground. But it wasn't ripped out, there were no signs of any forced used. It looked more like they just vanished into thin air.
However, since there were no trees, there were small plants everywhere on the ground. Inside the forest there were no plants growing on the ground, but here... after they walked a couple of steps and jumps out of the forest, the sun that was hidden behind the treetops was allowed to touch the ground again. Leaving space to let small plants grow everywhere.
But that wasn't the most confusing sight here. The most confusing sight was the slimes on the clearing. Nemu did not stop using his Detective skill and there were no signs of slimes outside the clearing. All of them were gathered here, like they were trapped. And their behavior was strange. Some of them did not move. While others moved with short movements in circles around an invisible object.
Nemu and Trewy watched the spectacle, trying to see if it made sense. If they missed something. But they couldn't come up with something. Whatever happened to the slimes, it wasn't some natural phenomenon. And then they looked at each other, trying to figure out something in each other's expressions. But nothing. They were both just confused.
They had seen a lot in the last few weeks, but nothing that didn't make sense. Nothing like here. A surreal sight, in an empty clearing.
And then, something touched Nemu's mind, as if it was searching for something. Scouting his mind, from all its sides. Circling like a pack of wolves, their prey. And that's how Nemu felt right now. Like a prey. Completely irritated and confused at the situation he tried to calm down again. After what was supposed to be a deep breath, he used his magical perception again. And he felt something, coming from the cave.
Trewy looked alternately at the clearing and at Nemu. She knew that something was happening to Nemu. Under other circumstances, she would have liked it here. Finally grass under her feet again, she had missed the feeling, slowly she moved from one foot to the other, but... She could not really enjoy it. She knew Nemu well enough by now to know that he was concentrating on something. So she decided to just wait.
Nemu continued to stretch out his magical feelers. His perception was already in the cave. Sometimes it felt like there were hundreds of slimes in the cave and the next moment it was like there were only a few. Whoever or whatever was in the cave, it was actively messing with his perception. Like he tried to prevent Nemu from entering his territory. Not just physical territory, but his mental territory. Of course, it didn't work out well. There was little that could limit Nemu's magical perception. And Nemu had a vague idea what was going on in the cave.
With a sigh, he stopped his magical perceptual battle with the cave. He had to see what was going on inside.
"Let's go inside." Nemu said, for the first time in his life feeling like he had a headache.
"How bad is it?" Trewy asked before she started walking. She knew Nemu would warn them if they were in danger, no question he was tense, but it didn't feel like he was scared. It felt like... he was angry.
"I... can't say for sure. I have to see it first. There's something in the cave that's interfering with my magical perception." He explained. Trewy knew that it was a serious situation. Something that could disturb even Nemu's magical perception? That had only happened once before. On the Demon Island. The reason was a powerful magical artifact. She had talked to Nemu about it afterwards. He told her that something like this won't happen again. He just didn't realize what was behind the barrier because he didn't know what the barrier was. He had never seen an illusion before.
As they moved toward the cave, something strange happened again. All the slimes stopped moving. Even the slimes that were aimlessly jumping around stopped. Of course, they don't have eyes. But Trewy felt the slimes staring at them. A very unpleasant feeling. Uncertainly, she walked alongside Nemu to the entrance of the cave, while keeping an eye on her surroundings. The slimes didn't move, but she still felt their senses on them.
They stopped at the entrance to the cave and looked into the darkness. There was faint light coming from inside the cave, but Trewy's eyes would have to get used to it. It wasn't as bright as the sun that was currently shining at them.
However, there was another reason why they stopped. It was Nemu. The mind that was observing him before, it changed. Now it was like it was standing in front of him.
‘Welcome. Please come in.' It said politely.
