The dullness of everyday life is weighing heavy on my heart. I remember when I was a child, filled with wonder and excitement at the thought of becoming the hero in my own story. But now, that innocent spark has been extinguished. Despite it all, I refuse to let go of hope. I won't let myself be consumed by the monotony, the lack of adventure and passion.
"That'll be $29.67, please!" The cashier's words cut through my thoughts, bringing me back to reality. But in my mind, I'm still holding on to that glimmer of hope, determined to make my life a story worth telling.
"Here you go!" I force a smile and hand him the money, masking the turmoil inside me. I grab my bag and step outside, pulling out my phone as I wait for the crosswalk. I scroll through pictures of happier times, memories that now feel like a lifetime ago.
But my reminiscing is interrupted when I see a young woman, lost in her own thoughts, walking directly into the path of an oncoming truck. Without hesitation, my legs move on their own accord, propelling me towards her. I push her out of the way, but there's not enough time for me to escape the collision. The truck slams into me and everything goes black.
I open my eyes to a world of blinding whiteness, with a figure standing just a few feet away. My confusion grows as I realize I should be dead, but I'm not bleeding out.
"What happened?" I ask, my voice barely above a whisper.
"You died, doing a worthless deed," the figure's voice echoes inside my head.
"Worthless?! I saved her life!" I shout, anger and disbelief coursing through me.
"You may have saved her life, but you doomed her more," the figure speaks again, its tone devoid of emotion.
"W-What do you mean?" My voice trembles with fear and anger.
"You pushed her out of the way of the truck, but in doing so, you caused her to hit her head on a lamp pole. She bled out, flickering in and out of consciousness before dying," the figure's voice is tinged with a hint of sadness.
As the reality of the situation sinks in, I scream out in despair. I had only prolonged her suffering and death. My actions caused more harm than good. And in that moment, I feel nothing but regret and guilt, as my heart aches with the weight of my mistakes.
