“Where am I?” Was my first thought upon waking up.

“What the. Am I tied to something?” I tried getting up, yet, for some reason, there was no feeling in my hands, “I might have been numbed by someone.”

“Did they blindfold me as well?” I attempted to look around, however it was pitch-black, “wait, no. There’s some light over there.”

“It’s very faint,” a blue undertone of light seeped in from the bottom of my sight, “that looks like… Moonlight?”

It was illuminating the floor and, subsequently, the dust floating around it. The flooring was entirely made up of soil, a thick layer of dust, and the trails made by insects.

“How dirty is this place—!” It wasn’t a moment after that that the ‘blindfold’ walked off my face. It was a gecko, a dark skinned one, who stepped out of my face as if I was a wall, and climbed down the furniture.

“......”

Why was a gecko… Ugh, I feared the thoughts of what might’ve happened while I was unconscious, so I focused on something else. The appearance of this room? House? Cabin, sort of the building was, to put it gently, very run-down.

Several pieces of furniture, held together only by interlaced spiderwebs, sat decaying in this room.

A few chiseled rocks made up what might have been a sink, judging by the mold and worms. Whatever it had been, tonight it looked like a graveyard for bugs.

The shine of the moon coming from the right wall was the only source of light, and also my only indicator of where the windows could be.

As I took in the sight of this decrepit building, my mind suddenly came to realization, “I’m not sitting on some chair, am I?”

The height of my point of view, the fact that I still couldn’t feel my limbs, and the issue of only having my sense of sight and touch available, altogether meant that, “I’m probably not human anymore.”

Had I become a table top accessory? Or something of the sort, I pondered for a while. However there were hints that would help me find out.

“Since a lizard was big enough to cover my whole view, then I guess it’s something with one eye, and I can’t really move that one eye. Otherwise, there’s no way it would take that long for the lizard to move away.”

“It’s something with a sense of touch and sight. That probably discards the chances of me being a clock, since clocks are bigger and make noise… at least old clocks do. And there’s no way something new would be in this kind of place.”

“Now I wish there was a mirror. I also wish that I didn't become something useless. And I wish to expand my range of vision.” I started praying to whatever god that would hear my pleas.

[Command accepted. Acquiring “Expanded Range of Vision” at the cost of 50RP.]

And, unexpectedly, my desire was realized. The limited range I had began to expand, almost as if I was floating above the spot I was a moment ago, allowing me to see what was in a meter radius around me.

“So this is how it looks around me. Dirty, full of mold and… are those stalks of plants growing on the walls?”

I slowly turned around, and looked at the floating hologram that had sprouted out of thin air along with the voice. “Okay, serious talk now. I wasn’t expecting a god to really help me out. I was thinking more of a genie while praying, to be frank.”

The exact same thing that the voice had said was written on the hologram, but with a “OK” button at the bottom just waiting to be pressed, “I don’t have fingers you know.”

Speaking of which, I can now look at myself and, “what?”

A plastic folding tube holding onto a large lens, the cubic large frame, a ping-pong ball sized shutter button, including even two circular holders on both sides, and lastly a paint job that seemed to represent the time period when taking black and white photos was a spectacular job done.

“This is exactly what would come to mind if someone asked me about an old portable camera,” I felt a chill, although I shouldn’t be able to.

I looked at the hologram again, “there’s no way this is me, right?”

As expected, no response came from it.

“Come on, this is a sad state to be in. Even though it’s looking better than the rest of the house, that’s just zero being better than minus one hundred.”

I stared intensely at the buttons, both the hologram’s and the camera’s, but nothing occurred. “This is a flaw.”

“I can’t touch anything, but I can feel the cabinet below me. How am I supposed to be a camera if I can’t make myself take photos?”

“Let me think.”

You are reading story Reincarnated as a Camera: I Will Build up a Worldly Portfolio at novel35.com

I am a camera, holograms, something called “RP” that has a numerical value, I am an old camera, the house is in ruins, pretty sure I just saw some disgusting bugs, I am a freaking camera…

“I’m a camera, okay,” and as if it heard my thoughts, the hologram changed into what seemed to be the next message.

[Current balance: 50RP]

“I only had a hundred RP to begin with? But, I have no idea if that’s a lot or too few. Can’t you show me, my status, my profile or something like that?”

[Command accepted. Displaying profile.]

It immediately responded to my begging, “good gracious,” and soon after revealed a larger window of information.

[Category: (Ancient) Camera.]

[Grade: Relic]

[Level: 1 | F-Rank]

[Features: (Photo Shooting), (Manual Trigger)]

[(Hidden) Functions: (Soul Imprinted Lv.MAX), (Short Focus Range Lv.1), (Expanded Vision Range Lv.1)]

[(Hidden) Rating Points: 50]

[Remaining uses: 10]

“Wow.”

On the white board floating in front of me, several lines of information that reminded me of some old RPG games appeared, “this is amazing.”

“I have a relic grade, that’s pretty high in games, like, a step above the epic grade items.”

“There’s also level and rank, but it’s good that I can grow from the beginning, who knows what mistakes I would’ve committed if I had started with a high level.”

“Is the ‘ancient’ prefix before the camera just a cool way of calling me old? And the features really are stating the obvious usage of a camera, haha,” I thought about it for a bit, “maybe that’s why I can’t take a photo by myself, I might require an ‘automatic trigger’ feature or something of the likes.”

“I can see that the thing I spent fifty RP on is right here, listed as a function, at level one. That explains the extremely short range. Though I feel disappointed that the range of focus of this camera is short and low level,” looking over the first function listed on the screen a few times made me think, “that’s my consciousness right there.”

And right as I was about to question the “hidden” parts, a smaller piece of information that looked very crucial caught my eye, “what do you mean by ten uses left!?”

I read it again just to make sure I wasn’t mistaken, “you can’t be serious. If this actually means that I can only take ten photos, then I’m done,” so, I took my time, which was a lot, to inspect every single part of the profile.

Until, “yeah, I’m done for,” I blurted that out.

Once I saw the next menu, which appeared once I thought about the uses of the rating points, formerly mentioned as RP, I couldn’t help but feel like I had wasted my life.

[Available Upgrades: (Model Upgrade 200RP)]

[Available Features: (Flash Trigger 150RP)]

[Available Functions: (Augmented Lens 75RP), (Decreased Frame Weight 75RP), (Increased Focus Speed 50RP), (Expanded Focus Range 50RP), (Expanded Vision Range Lv.2 30RP), (Short Focus Range Lv.2 25RP)]

[Available Services: (Replenish Ten Uses 50RP), (Repair 50RP)]

“Look at those prices!” I would’ve held my head in shock if I had one, “I really am dumb for spending so many rating points on a small range expansion, aren’t I?”

“If someone picks me up and spends all of my uses, or breaks me, I only have one more chance before I become a useless piece of scrap.”

“And I don’t even know how to gain more points,” I stopped for a moment to look at my new body, “though, I’m guessing, it must be related to taking pictures.”

“Other than that—” My thoughts were abruptly interrupted by a feeling of foreboding.

Something that I had never felt before but instinctively knew that I wouldn’t like to go through even once, was what my non-existent guts warned me about.

Once the perpetrator was within my range of view, I knew, subconsciously and probably consciously as well, exactly what was about to happen, and also that I had no way of stopping it. And by it, I meant that vile creature of six legs and not-so-blue shell that held no remorse in crawling towards an honest and clean camera.

“Please don’t. Go back to the wall or something, but not the camera. I beg you,” I wish I could prostate myself towards it right now.

That was just the beginning, however, of my several days of suffering in this house.
