670 – Ymir, the Misshapen Giant

I face the incoming ymir head on. Seeing that I’m not fleeing, its two mouths open wide in glee.

【[Ymir]: L (Legendary) monster】
【A giant with a strange body.】
【A thousand trees break as it walks, and quenching its thirst requires all the water of a lake.】
【It is said that if its anger is roused, a continent will sink.】

I’ve run away from it so far, but here it is… This encounter will be the last. I’ll fight it head on.

『W-w-will this be okay…?』

I feel treant trembling on my back.

『I’m sure you’re both tired. Rest on my back. If you feel you can, try shooting some long range attacks to gain some of the experience. If you can land your [Death God Seed], treant, then you’ll probably get a decent amount.』

[Death God Seed] will continue to cut down the ymir’s MP as long as the battle lasts, so even if he does nothing else he’ll continue to contribute to the battle. Against a single, high-rank enemy, [Death God Seed] should be very effective for levelling.

『Although…With my new stats, it might be over in an instant!』

I take a look at the ymir’s status as I speak. Having always run away before now, I never properly looked at its status.

Wh-what are those crazy high stats!? I had assumed it would be about the same as the origin matter, but it’s way above that. Its magic stat is low, all the rest are higher than I expected.

My speed and attack still surpass it, but with my HP so low right now, I don’t want to get into a brawl. On top of that, I’m running low on MP, so fighting at a distance would be hard. Perhaps running away would be for the best after all.

『…Hey, treant, could you give me back that mana?』

『How am I supposed to do that!?』

I-I suppose I should take a look at the unfamiliar skills. Though it’s clear that this guy relies mostly on sheer stats rather than skills.

【Characteristic Skill [Headlong Charge]】
【Counteracts movement restrictions and stat decreases that result from status conditions such as poison or paralysis. 】
【While this characteristic skill is active, attack power and speed are also raised.】

Dangerous…! I hadn’t realised such trap-like skills exist. It’s my first time seeing something like this. Both Aro and treant have poison skills, so I need to make sure they absolutely don’t use them. If this thing gets any more powerful or faster, I won’t be able to handle it.

【Normal Skill [Herculean Strength]】
【Consumes MP to momentarily raise attack power.】
【Additionally, by activating this skill at the moment damage is received, the damage taken is reduced.】

So it has a power up it can activate on its own too! It’s always this sort of simple skill that end up being the strongest.

With this power up in its pocket, I’ll need to brace myself for an attack power of over 7000. I’m just glad it doesn’t have any other attack-boosting skills.

The ymir leaps up and swings its long heavy arm towards me. I fly away, slamming my tail into its chin as I leave. A loud crack rings out from the ymir’s neck as its head is forced up.

I fly around it, aiming to strike it quickly in follow-up. But the ymir’s waist twists as it stretches out its arm, swiping it towards me. I dive down to dodge, then take my distance.

I was able to avoid it this time, but those long arms are seriously threatening. I think it must have endured the damage to its head with [Herculean Strength]. It was probably prepared to take some damage in order to close the distance and compensate for my greater speed.

I was able to get away because of my stat advantage this time, but I absolutely want to avoid getting into a brawl. The ymir is a bit like the hecatoncheir, but while the hecatoncheir had overwhelming defence as its selling point, the ymir has brute strength.

If I just had MP, I could kill it at range…! I guess I was underestimating it too much to think I could fight a max level Legendary while I’m this exhausted. Even compared to the origin matter, the ymir is quite dangerous.

『Master-dono! Nice dodge! I was able to apply [Death God Seed]!』

Treant exclaims happily. That’s great, but I don’t think our outlook is very good.

My stats as an apocalypse are higher, so if I can get a good flurry of hits in, I should be able to kill it. But, my low HP and MP hurt a lot here. Just one full-power hit from its crazy strength could be enough to kill me. This battle will probably end before [Death God Seed] can have much of an effect.

Should I use the last of my MP to go on the offensive and see if I can take it down? Or should I hold back so I can heal? I’m not sure what the correct answer is here.

『I’d like to go for hit and run tactics, but I don’t think it’ll let me get away with that…』

The ymir’s neck snaps back as the wound on its chin closes. It has [Autoregeneration], so in order to wear it down through hit and run, I’ll be forced to enter its range many times. Its reach and power makes that too risky.

That said, bursting down its HP in close quarters would also be hard. The ymir is fast, even for a Legendary. In addition, it can endure a hit with [Herculean Strength] and then use its long reach to counterattack.

I’ve decided what to do. I’ll use the last of my MP to hurt it with mid-range skills, then immediately dive in to finish it in close quarters.

The only saving grace here is that the ymir doesn’t have any long-range skills. I can gain time to think by taking my distance.

“Dragon-god-sama, what is the giant doing…?”

Aro asks worriedly. I cut off my train of thought and turn to face the ymir.

The ymir is clasping a noroi tree between its hands. As I try to puzzle out what it’s doing, its body becomes bright red, and its muscles swell up. The tree lifts up and immediately swings towards me.

N-no way!? Even though those trees are so stupidly heavy!?

I hurriedly fly up to avoid the tree. Powerful winds billow over me from its passage. Aro and treant desperately cling onto me.

I-it’s made up for its lack of long range skills though brute force…!
