Chapter 1: 01- The Unfortunate Hero

'Life is never easy for anyone. But at least they have a life.'

That's what Luke always thought while laying on white hospital bed.

It was his 18th birthday, it should have been special day for him. But for Luke, today was no different. Instead, he couldn't help but fear a little. After all he didn't have even few months left to live now. 

Others might argue what was so good about living when his whole world was a single hospital room. But he would only scoff at such ignorant people. 

So what if he couldn't go out? He still had few novels to read and he still had few games to win. 

Luke shook his head to get out of his thoughts and grinned towards the laptop in front of him.

'Let's see what is so good about this gaming laptop.' He thought and opened the gift he got just a few minutes ago. 

'There is already a game?' It was a little shocking for him. 'Did Alan also begin to play games?'

His elder brother was never interested in games and novels. So it was indeed a surprise for him.

He hurriedly opened the game called 'The unfortunate Hero', and the screen changed to show a wooden room. 

Luke checked all the game options. It was an rpg game, which was Luke's favorite genre. So it was already a good start. 

But Luke frowned a little when he tried to change his character's information. 

The default name of his character was Mark, and no matter what he tried he couldn't change it. 

Luke was not used to such restrictions in the game, but he still continued. Because the graphics were extremely realistic. 

After playing for few hours he was sure that Alan never played the 'The unfortunate Hero'. 

Why? Because it was an eroge. The main character was a 'Hero' who had to defeat demon King with the help of his 'Party' and other 'Heroes'. 

Seven holy weapons chose seven heroes from seven different races. These chosen ones were called heroes. Luke's character, Mark, was chosen from human race. 

The seven holy weapons gave all seven heroes a lot of advantages, but they also got a curse. 

It seemed, gods couldn't give such powers to mortals without any backlash, and a curse was given to heroes to minimize the backlash.

His own curse was the curse of lust. Which forced his character to be horny all the time, and his character frequently had to have sex to not go insane.

'Coincidentally', all members of his 'Party' were beautiful girls with their own stories. So, he didn't get bored even when he was not completing a quest.

It was a big game. Luke couldn't complete it even after three weeks. Though, he couldn't play 'The Unfortunately Hero' in front of others was a big factor as well why it was taking him so long. 

Initially, he had always wondered why the game was called 'The Unfortunately Hero', but after playing it for few days he thought it was a perfect name since 'Hero' was really unfortunate.

Firstly, when Holy-sword chose him, royal guards reached his house within 10 minutes, and he was brought to the King. 

Luke didn't like the King. That bastard was extremely arrogant, and he even demanded Luke to use power of the holy-sword to give rare classes to the King's daughter and other nobles. 

Luke was angry, because he could give rare classes to only 4 people in the world. Hence, he decided to refuse the king.

Luke didn't fear the king because anyone who killed a hero would get the 'curse' which would instantly make any person go insane without the holy weapon to minimize the curse's effect. 

That was also the reason why no one tried to harm 'heroes' to get holy weapons. But the damn game didn't even give him an option to refuse.

Luke was vexed, he hated such restrictions in the game, but he really liked other aspects of the game, hence he continued. 

But it seemed his character's misery had just started because next, his family was kidnapped.

Unsurprisingly, he had to complete all the quests the kidnapper gave him, because again, there was no option to refuse. 

Though it didn't mean, he would do nothing. Luke used all resources available to him to find kidnappers. After much patience and hard work…

…he still found nothing.

But one day, his character got the information of the kidnappers by a… ghost. 

It seemed his character's family members were angry because they were being used against him, hence they wanted to help him.

But kidnappers also weren't idiots. They had jammed all kind of communication through an array and even locked their mana.

But his character's little sister, Catherine was some kind of genius.

Who used two or three different spells to reach him in the ghost form, and informed him about kidnappers. 

But how did she use spells when their mana was locked? Luke was confused but when he found out the answer his whole body froze. 

His character's family had used their own soul energy to send him information. But they needed a lot of energy to breach the jamming arrays. Hence all of them… died

Though Luke didn't know them, he still felt bad for them. After all they sacrificed their lives because they were being used against him. Luke felt jealous of Mark for the first time.

Luke's own family didn't even spare a glance towards him. The only one who visited him was his elder brother, Alan. But Luke didn't have much to complain since it was also because of his family that he was able to live for so long. After all, his medication was extremely expensive.

Luke shook his head to get out of such thoughts, and looked at the cute ghost in front of him, who was beginning to disappear. He promised her he would kill those kidnappers in most inhumane way possible.

To which the ghost told him to just be careful and not risk his life. Which again melted his heart. So he killed those kidnappers as brutally as possible.

But it was not the last problem his character faced. His life seemed so miserable Luke wanted to stop playing altogether.

Again, he felt 'The Unfortunate Hero' was a perfect name for his character.

It became so annoying he wanted to punch the developer. Everything, which could go wrong went wrong with him. Everyone just wanted to take advantage of him, and they went to every length to achieve their goal. 

It came to the point he wanted to stop playing. But he didn't, because he wanted to take revenge against those people who made his character's life a living hell.

'But what if developers didn't even put revenge option in the game?' He didn't want to waste more of his time. So he simply searched about it on google. 

He spent few minutes, but he found… Nothing.

There was no information about the game or developer. He even asked few of his friends but they also didn't know anything about such a game. 

Though it was a little suspicious, he still wanted to take his revenge. Hence he continued playing. 

But things went continuously bad for him no matter how hard he tried. In the end, he was betrayed by his own 'Party' at the crucial moment. When he was fighting against demon king's general, Vampire king.

There were seven such generals, and every hero had to defeat one general with the help of their party to reach demon king. At such crucial moment, both of his party members ran away, like they had already planned it. Two of his party members had already died in different dangerous quests. Hence these two were last of his party members. 

"…"

'Only demon king is left,' Luke reminded himself as to not stop playing because of his anger. But he promised himself, he would surely take revenge against those bitches.

After much hardwork and some luck, he reached the demon king with other six heroes. Who had also lost their party members one way or another.

They fought against demon king together, but demon king was too strong. Luke frowned, his character was also at the SSS-level. How could gap between him and demon king be so large when the demon king was also at the same level. 

At least, that's what Luke believed because no mortal could reach the next stage. Which was demi-god, and only children of true god could reach that level. 

In the end, his suspicion was proven correct. Demon king was a demi-god!

'Fuck! How can seven heroes defeat the demon king? Have gods gone insane?' 

Luke thought, but he found out he was wrong. Actually, the gods had never thought that seven heroes could defeat demon god. That was also why they had put the curse on heroes in the name of backlash. 

When every hero was dead including Luke's character, Mark. He saw a scene where all seven curses absorbed the soul of seven heroes, including all the monsters the heroes had killed in their journey. Then the seven curses went inside demon king's body and tried to seal the demon king for eternity. 

Luke was shocked! He had become a little numb to such 'unfortunate' things after playing that shit game for close to two months. But this betrayal was not something small. 

Basically, the seven heroes were meant to be just sacrifices from the very beginning. 

"Hahaha," suddenly the demon king started to laugh like a maniac. "So dragon king was right. Gods are truly dead, and only this mechanism has saved their world till now." 

Luke knew who Dragon King was. One of his party member, who was also the daughter of that bastard King, had told him about the Dragon King and how seven heroes defeated him. 

That was also how Luke found out it was not the first time that Heroes were chosen. 

"Hehehe," his thoughts were interrupted by demon Kong's laughter. 

Which felt eerie to Luke. 

"Hehe, I already had an idea about your mechanism, and I had already prepared for it." After saying that, Demon king closed his eyes. Next, the mouth of his snake like ring began to enlarge, and in front of disbelieving eyes of Luke, it ate all seven curses. 

Luke was shocked! All heroes had tried to remove curses, but nothing happened no matter what they did. But demon king already had a method. 

'So our lives were sacrificed in vain.'

Luke was so angry, he wanted to smash the damn laptop. But suddenly, he began to feel weak. 

He wanted to call someone for help, but stopped because of a shocking sight in front of him.

A crack was beginning to form in the mid air just opposite him. Luke felt that something or someone was shattering the very space in front of him.

'What the…' 

Before he could complete his sentence, a blue spherical ball came out of his body and went inside the crack. 

The crack began to heal rapidly, and the room returned to its initial state in no time. 

Only a soulless body of Luke was left on the bed. Whose face was still filled with confusion and fear of unknown.
