Chapter 1: New Beginnings

‘Ugh, my head really hurts! How much did I drink last night?’ She thought to herself ‘actually what did I do at all last night’

She tried her hardest to remember what she did last night, she failed to remember anything. Slight panic started to set in at this, she tried to open her eyes and realised they were already open, she was just in a pitch black room.

She went to raise her hand to her head to attempt to quell the metaphorical hammers pounding inside of her head. She froze as a green thing flashed across her vision, kinaesthesia told her this is her arm. Her vision was blurrier than she expected, but try as she might she could not blink it away, she couldn’t blink at all. The panic started to grow, she tried all kinds of actions, many were met with failure. She couldn’t turn her head, she couldn’t talk and she couldn’t blink.

She could walk and she could turn around, turning around revealed a green blur in the distance, seemingly miles away from her. She had come to the understanding that she was not in her usual form, she didn’t know what her usual form is, in fact she didn’t know anything about herself personally, she remembers buildings, cars, planes, trains, the sky, trees, bugs, books, actually she remembers a lot of bugs and books, and lots more, but nothing about herself. Did she own a book, a car, maybe even a plane, a building or even any bugs?.

While perusing her so-called memory of things, she had reached the green blur. She would have taken a deep breath if she could breathe, before walking through the green blur. 

She took a moment to get her bearings as her eyes adjusted to the new level of light. She looked around for a moment to let her identify the blurry shapes around her as trees, they had their usual green colour, in fact everything was green, the bark and the sky included, but some leaves and plants were almost black.

A slightly feminine but robotic voice said from seemingly every direction, not hashly, but enough to make her jump a bit.

‘System?’ she echoed in her mind.

[Listening:]

‘What is going on? Have I gone crazy’

[Answer: Negative. No mental status effects detected.]

‘Status effects?’

[Answer: Status effects are internal or external influences on your base stats, bodily state or mental state.]

She pondered her new information. After thinking for a moment she formulates a few questions. ‘What happened to me and who are you?’

[Answer: I am the System Response Interface Program.]

‘What about my other question?’

[Answer: Only the last request is answered to save on memory usage.]

‘Okay, one question at a time, what happened to me?’

[Answer: The administrators have chosen you for the reincarnation initiative due to a multitude of factors.]

[Extension: You have been reincarnated as a Common Tarantula.]

‘That’s why I can only see in green?’

[Answer: Affirmative, the majority of spiders can only see in green and ultraviolet light.]

[Extension: Full colour vision is available from the acquisitions menu.]

[Extension: The acquisitions menu is accessible through the status board.]

‘How do I open the status board?’

[Answer: Focus on yourself and say ‘Status’.]

‘Status.’

She goes through all the pages and menus available to her. ‘My stat points are kind of lower than I’d expect for a tarantula even with all the status affects’

[Answer: Stat point values have been adjusted to reflect the average strength of the local environment.]

‘So I’m weak compared to the creatures in this area, can you adjust for the global average?’

[Answer: Affirmative. Would you like to display adjusted stats?]

‘Yes’

‘Why is my name not showing?’

[Answer: You are unnamed.]

‘What was my name?’

The system is silent for a moment.

[Answer: Unknown.]

She thought to herself for a few moments, as she thought of a name for herself. ‘How about Vanessa?’

‘Are the gods the same as the administrators?’

[Answer: All Gods are administrators. Not all administrators are gods, especially powerful individuals can become administrators.]

[Answer: Negative. The civilised races are hostile to monsters you will be killed on sight.]

[Answer: Priority 1: Uphold the Integrity of the System, even at the expense of all other priorities. Priority 2: Uphold the safety of the administrators. Priority 3: Uphold the contract of peace. Priority 4: Ensure transfer of otherworldly knowledge.]

‘What happens when I reach level 10?’

[Extension: Different Acquisitions will unlock specific paths of evolution.]

‘How do I level up?’

[Answer: Kill other creatures and reach milestones to gain experience.]

‘Why didn’t the other milestone give me experience?’

[Answer: The milestone did not present enough challenge to warrant an experience reward]

‘Yes’

She looked on in amazement as colour slowly faded in and her vision sharpened drastically to the point of no longer being blurry until she couldn’t see any further through the trees. When her vision stopped improving the system spoke up again.

[Notice: Acquisition complete.]

‘Thank you. How do I get more points?’

[Answer: You will gain more configuration points as you level up.]

[Extension: You can trade stat points for configuration points and configuration points for stat points.]

[Extension: If any of your stat points reach 0 you will be immobilised until said stat reaches has a value greater than .0]

‘That's all the questions I have for now’

[Answer: Acknowledged. Closing connection.]

Now that her questions have been answered for now she turns her attention towards her future. She needs to pass her knowledge on to the denizens of this world, she needs to be able to communicate, to communicate she needs some skill or evolution to do so. She needs to level up. She needs to hunt.
