Prateek was desperate to uncover the truth behind the collar marks on his mother's neck. He had asked everyone in his father's household, but none of them seemed to know the answer. Frustrated and on the verge of despair, Prateek remembered one more person who might be able to help him - his cousin, Shila.

As he stood in front of her, Prateek could feel the desperation emanating from him in waves. "Please, I need to know," he begged, his voice hoarse and strained. "It's driving me crazy not knowing."

Shila hesitated, her expression pensive as she looked away from him. "I don't know if I should tell you," she said, her voice soft and hesitant. "It's not my place to reveal your mother's secrets."

Prateek's heart sank at her words. He had hoped that Shila would be able to help him, but it seemed like she was unwilling to share what she knew. "I understand if you don't want to tell me," he said, his voice sincere. "But please, I need to know. It's not just about curiosity, it's about understanding my own past and my mother's. I need to know the truth."

Shila looked at him with sympathetic eyes. "I can see how much this means to you. And I understand your need to know the truth. But I'm just not sure if I should be the one to tell you. Maybe you should ask your father or another family member."

Prateek shook his head, his determination growing. "I've tried asking everyone else, but no one will tell me. Please, you're the only one who can help me. I'll do anything, just tell me what you know," he said, his eyes pleading with her.

After a moment of hesitation, Shila relented. "Okay, I'll tell you what I know. But you have to promise me that you won't tell anyone else, and that you'll keep it a secret between us. And you have to do something for me in return," she said, her eyes glinting mischievously.

Prateek eagerly nodded his agreement. "I promise! I also won't tell anyone. Thank you so much for trusting me," he said, relief and gratitude flooding through him.

Shila took a deep breath and began to speak.

"I know it's hard to hear about your mother's past," Shila said, her voice soft and sympathetic. "But you have to understand that she's been through a lot. She's been through more than most people could ever imagine."

Prateek's eyes widened in shock at the revelation. He could feel the blood rushing to his face as he tried to process the information. "What do you mean?" Prateek asked, his voice strained.

"Your mother was betrayed by someone she trusted," Shila said, her eyes sorrowful. "She was enslaved and treated like a common servant. It was a difficult and painful experience for her, one that she has never fully recovered from."

"But why didn't anyone tell me about this before?" Prateek asked, his voice filled with confusion and anger. "Why was I kept in the dark about my own mother's past?"

"I don't know," Shila said, shaking her head. "But I do know that your mother wanted to protect you from the pain and trauma of her past. She wanted you to grow up without the burden of knowing what she had gone through. And your father probably wanted to protect her and the family's reputation."

"But that's not fair," Prateek said, his voice filled with frustration. "I have a right to know the truth about my own mother. I have a right to understand my own past and my own identity."

"I understand how you feel," Shila said, her voice gentle. "And I agree that you have a right to know the truth. But you have to understand that your mother's past is complicated and difficult. It's not easy for anyone to talk about it, and it's especially hard for your mother. She's had to live with the pain and trauma of her past every day. It's not something that can be easily explained or understood."

"I understand," Prateek said, his voice heavy with emotion. "But I still need to know the truth. I need to understand my mother and my own past. I can't just ignore it or pretend that it doesn't exist."

"I understand," Shila said, her voice filled with empathy. "But be careful. The truth can be a powerful and dangerous thing. It can change everything and it can't be undone. Be sure that you're ready for the truth before you pursue it."

Prateek nodded, his mind racing with thoughts and emotions. He knew that he had to find out the truth about his mother's past, no matter how difficult or painful it might be. He was determined to understand his own identity and his own past, and to make things right for his mother. He knew it wouldn't be easy, but he was willing to do whatever it took to uncover the truth.

"But who was the rival? Do you know?" he asked urgently, his voice shaking.

Shila shook her head. "I don't know. That's all I know. But I have a feeling that your father knows more than he's letting on. You should ask him."

Prateek nodded, his mind racing with questions and theories. He had to find out the truth about his mother's past and make things right. But first, he had to fulfill Shila's request. He turned to her, his expression serious. "Okay, I'll do it. What do you want me to do?"

Without waiting for a response, Shila stood up and grabbed his hand, a sly smile on her lips. "Come on, let's go fulfill my request. You promised, remember?"

She pulled him into her bedroom and locked the door behind them. The room was dimly lit, with only a few candles burning on the dresser. The air was heavy with the scent of lavender and rose petals.

Prateek's mind was still racing with questions and theories, but he knew he had to focus on the task at hand. He had made a promise to Shila, and he intended to keep it. He followed her over to the bed and sat down beside her, his heart pounding in his chest.

Shila leaned in close to him, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Okay, now it's time for you to fulfill your part of the deal. I want you to close your eyes and let me give you a surprise," she said, her voice low and husky.

Prateek hesitated for a moment, his mind still preoccupied with thoughts of his mother and the revelation he had just learned. But he knew he had to push those thoughts aside for the moment and focus on Shila. He closed his eyes and waited, his breath coming in short gasps.
