By the morning, I woke up and went to the well to pitch a bucket of water. I couldn't do this at night because of the barricade due to past incidents of people falling into the well at night. To prevent more incidents, the chief covered the well with a large wooden board with a couple of heavy stones above it to prevent children from removing it.

With a full bucket in hand, I returned home and cleaned myself at the back of the house.

Cleaning by myself felt off putting. Before the disease struck the village, I would usually bathe with my both of my parents or one of them. That has been that way for so long that it became my new norm, but now I'm alone and it feels so alien.

After cleaning myself, I went inside to eat breakfast with my father. We ate the leftover stew from last night. He also bought bread from the baker which we shared with each other.

"Take care of your mother, and don't cause too much trouble. I'll be going now"

"I will. Who do you think I am?"

He chuckled.

"My son. That's why I'm telling you this"

He pats my head, then once he shouldered his bow and quiver, he left through the door.

After cleaning the dishes, I then took care of my mother's well-being. Our conversation from last night stuck to me like glue, and I couldn't help but think that my mother has given up hope.

Regardless, I fed her, cleaned her, and nursed her. Unfortunately, without any medicinal ingredients, all I could do is feed her warm meals and put a cold wet towel on her forehead.

"Thank you, my dear'

She coughs hard, enough for the dark fluid to come out.

"Don't talk too much"

My worry for her increases each passing day. Her fever is getting worse, her coughs are becoming more frequent, and the discoloration of her skin is spreading.

At this rate she'll...

Seeing my expression, she caresses my hand while smiling softly.

"I know that look..."

She coughs again

"You should... worry about yourself... I... don't have much time left..."

I scowled at her remark.

"Don't say that! We just need to wait for any peddler to arrive with herbs. When they arrive, then we can treat you!"

She clears her throat before sighing.

"The plague kills the sick after a week... some die sooner... I'm fortunate to still be alive... but... it won't be long..."

Despite her smile, her expression felt sorrowful.

I bit my lower lip, feeling the hopelessness.

The situation has turned grim, and we are helpless to do anything. There are no doctors, no hospices, and no gods. We are suffering from this disease, and yet, no action is being taken by the King. No action is taken by anyone with power.

Noble duties... what a joke. It only takes one royal decree to help the masses... but they choose to do nothing. I should've crucified every noble and boil what child they have if I knew this was the future.

As I fell to my own dark thoughts, I felt a warm hand touch my face.

"That face of yours... your thinking of horrible things... aren't you?"

My face twisted to anger.

"Of course! People are sick and dying, yet no one from the nobility is doing anything! Not the King! Not the Dukes! Not even a lowly Baron! They have so much wealth and power, but they do nothing to help those in need. They are a disgrace! Why do we have to suffer while they live in luxury?!"

All of my pent up thoughts have finally been released at that moment. My anger, my disdain for nobility, and my inherent powerless life.

Hearing my rant, my mother sighed.

"Indeed... I know how you feel, my boy... but please... don't speak of your thoughts to anyone... I may die... but I want you to live a longer life..."

Her words hurt my heart, but she's right. As a peasant, I can't do anything about this injustice.

I've heard what they did to my cousin at Tolbern from my parent's discussions. They roped him to horses and tore him in half, then staked his head in front of the gate with pigs feasting his corpse below.

All because someone heard him say the King is a fool for continuing the war.

"I know... I'm going to go now, mother. Sleep well"

She faintly smiled.

"I will... be a good boy, okay?"

I nodded.

I stood up, and began to take my leave.

One day... one day, the nobility will collapse. It may not be today or tomorrow, and I may not be the one to do it. But one day... it will collapse.

I smiled slightly from my thoughts.

I left the room and began to work on my chores.

I first cleaned the house, then began to help Mr. Markus in chopping firewood in exchange for some. Afterwards, I went to the market to restock our pantry for the week.

"It seems that prices have risen again..." I mumbled.

Fortunately, I have always been a good haggler so I was able to lower the price to 15 fur pelts in total.

"By the way, mister. May I ask why did the prices increase?"

He looks at me with a scornful look, most likely due to my haggling.

"Taxes, kid. The stupid king has risen the taxes again"

"Hey! Careful... you might get impaled for that" says another farmer.

"Bah! I would rather die than work another day in the fields! Why do we have to pay these stupid taxes while the king and his court get to enjoy luxury?! Why can't he share his luxury with us?!"

"It's because he's royalty... they're descendants of the first heavenly angels during the war 300 years ago"

"What war?"

They look at me, the scornful farmer looks at me with annoyance.

"The war against the demons! What else?"

So they're talking about that... so it has been 300 years...

"So... who are these angels?"

The scornful farmer sighed.

"They are heroes who were sent down from heaven to slay the demons. They were all lead by a great angel, and with his brilliance, he was able to command the forces of heaven and earth to slay the demons"

Great angel? Heaven? What on earth?

"And... who is this great angel?"

They both look at each other, unsure on what to say.

Then, the other farmer looked at me and spoke.

"The angel that got corrupted and known as the [Betrayer of Mankind and Heaven]"

What?

"Can... Can I know the name?"

"...No... you cannot. Just saying his name will bring great evil and disaster!"

"Aha! Maybe he's the reason why we're all suffering! The reason for the tax! The reason why I'm balding! It makes so much sense now"

"So... the cultists have cursed the Kingdom?! Damn it, no wonder..."

Cultists? Betrayer? Angel?

What happened in the past 300 years?

"I... I see. Well, I'll be going now. Take care!"

I then hurriedly went home.

What the hell just happened? What kind of stories did they pass down throughout the centuries? And the heavens?

I faintly smiled and chuckled as I internally monologue.

There was no heaven... no gods... no angels... only me. The gods didn't give me a revelation... I did it all myself. And why did they call me a traitor? I didn't betray anyone! I wanted to help people. Help the poor and common people from the corrupted system of nobility! Abolish the Kings and replace them with competent minds. How dare they twist my name and smear my reputation! Damn it.

Once at home, I began to restock the pantry with grain and salted vegetables for the week.

"It's a good thing father is a hunter, otherwise we wouldn't be able to eat meat. Eating salted meat isn't healthy after all, and it isn't the tastiest either!"

As I organized the pantry, a faint knock came from the door. Behind the door is a small blue apparition that I know fairly well.

Alina is here. I wonder what she needs

"Coming!"

I finished my work and rushed towards the door.
