Chapter Twelve

The voice belonged to the girl named Claire. She was a Seven year old girl who had smooth and long white natural hair, the clothes.. or should I say clothes? more like, the equipment she had on today was the basic leather protection she always wore when we were fighting. she was the first friend I made after coming into this new and fascinating world.

When she slammed the door open and shouted she ran at me and hugged me, besides her height, which was now a little shorter than mine (although she had still grown taller) and her gorgeous white hair, she hadn’t changed much. However these estimates were from the exterior appearance only, I was eager to get in a fight with her.

“How have you been Claire, You sure have grown!”

“Pftt, James you sound like an old man, haha.” After laughing a bit more she responded: “However I have been great, I have been training every day waiting for your arrival, this time I’m going to beat you up! ok?” Saying this while throwing some fast and cute punches.

At least her personality hadn’t changed, she was still the Extroverted and cute Claire I knew. But what was I? I don’t think I have changed in the slightest, moreover, I feel like I have stayed the same, without growing up much. What age was I mentally now? Twenty-two? I guess I’m already an adult.

I wonder how my sister is doing, I hope she didn’t cry too much after knowing what had happened to me. I’d feel bad if she, who had supported me all through my life suddenly became depressed.

But enough about that, I should be happier. I mean I can’t change what happened in the past, and if I’m going to be honest. If I had the chance to avoid being reincarnated, I wouldn’t take it. I feel like I am someone now, I feel like I have a meaning.

“Oh by the way James, before we play, Grandpa wants to speak to you for a bit..” she said while pushing her hair back behind her neck.

“Do you have any idea what it’s about?” I was taken out of my daze and responded.

“I have a small clue but I’m not too sure, just ask grandpa,” she said while pushing me inside the front door. “Alright follow me to grandpas office, let’s go!”

I remember Claire being playful, but I forgot how playful she was. I might not have any energy after tonight.

I sighed and followed after her.

“Grandpa! I brought James! I’ll be out the back so don’t be too long!” Claire said before hugging me and running outside while giggling.

“Fuahaha it’s been a while, James, two years has it not? You have grown into a sturdy boy, and since you are here, your training will get even more intense. And for that exact reason, I have hired one of the best men I know to personally train you up into being fit to attend Kingwood Academy For Swordsmanship and Swordcraft!

I gasped. Wasn’t that meant to be the top school in the country? Never mind the country, but the entire human continent? Just how influential was the family I was born into?

I took a bowing stance.

“Grandfather I am grateful that I will have the opportunity to attend such a privileged school, you have my unwavering thanks!”

What a great opportunity! I clutched my hand which was shaking with excitement.

However, I have one worry, what kind of training will me and Claire have to be put through, just to have the chance to attend this prestigious school?

“Fuahaha, pay it no mind, anyways..” a man suddenly walked into the room which was connected to the back of Edwards’s office. “This man is Gregory, he is a highly renowned King Rank Swordsman. And one of my best friends! Claire has already been told the schedule of your training routines ask her about it later. Now I think It’s been quite a while since I saw you fight. When was the last time again? With Claire? Anyways you will now go against Gregory. Alright, let’s go to the back!”

"Before we fight." Gregory spoke-

"Young James I would like to say thank you. I heard you had an affinity to control the root from your grandfather... I am truly grateful to be your instructor." Gregory who was a typical scruffy bearded swordsman with brown hair and who had the build of a gorilla, wearing a tucked in brown shirt along with some black leather trousers matching his leather gloves and boots. He looked and sounded like the uncle you always adored.

"No, I am grateful that you would be willing to spend your precious time training someone as unexperienced as myself, thank you!"

After saying this, I quickly went to get changed out of the clothes that I had come with, and change into some more fitting, combat.

However it seemed that anytime I saw Claire, she was always in her combat clothes. Maybe that was just her preference...

After changing clothes I put on my leather protection gear with my gloves, and decided to go to the back garden to fight Gregory.

“You can do it, James! Good luck!”

I could hear the cheers of Claire who was standing on the top of a wooden wall waving at me. I waved back while focusing on Gregory who was already holding his sword up.

“For this fight, James, you will be using real swords, this is also part of the assessment, I want to see how well you move under a life-threatening situation, and if you can adapt well enough to the sudden change of pace.

Although somewhat shocked, the shock quickly faded away, I mean I guess I’ll have to go all out, however, I don’t think I’ll be able to land a hit on Gregory, right now I don’t even think I classify as a intermediate Swordsman…

Guess I’ll have to give it my all.

The cheering of Claire still fueling the flame in my heart.

“Start!” Edward roared, the match had begun.

Quickly analyzing the situation, I saw what looked like an opening to the right of Gregory’s side, however, it could well be a fluke to put me off target and confuse me.

Nobody moved. Was he waiting for me to start rushing toward him? Or was he waiting to see what my next move would be?

If he wasn’t going to move first, then I would.

Although we were not allowed to use Sword forms for this duel, to a certain extent it did put me at an disadvantage, every part of Gregory was superior to me. However, I could not just do nothing.

I bolted forwards.

Knowing that he would probably dodge, I side-stepped to the side and slashed sidewards. But as expected he Blocked my strike. It was like watching a cat play around with a mouse and going back and forth between letting it think it had escaped, to snaring its tail down with its sharp claws over and over again.

This is the first time I felt this humiliated in a while, and I made a vital mistake. I lost my calm.

Almost as if he knew that I had lost concentration, Gregory slashed down for the first time.
