Newcomer (1)

Early the next morning, Anna walked briskly to the earl’s mansion. The knee injury was no longer a serious problem. It took less than half an hour to walk. Working hours started at 7 o’clock in the morning, and so she needed to get up at 6 o’clock in the morning. Fortunately, she didn’t have the habit of sleeping late, and Pomegranate Lane was lively even before six o’clock, so waking up early was not difficult for her.

Now that spring was here, the sky was bright early. Walking on the road, Anna could see busy civilians coming and going. Common people needed to work for a living and therefore must get up early, but the nobles lived a more comfortable life. There were often banquets until the early hours of the morning, and they typically woke up after nine in the morning, so the kitchen maids would only start work at seven in the morning.

As for the evenings with banquets, many preparations would be made in advance, and the maids who went home every day like Anna could still get off work at 7 o’clock, while the maids who resided in the earl estate completed the rest of the work. Their salary was also higher than Anna’s.

After greeting the guard at the back door of the earl’s mansion, Anna entered the estate. She walked safely to the kitchen along the path Rebecca showed her yesterday.

The kitchen in Earl’s estate was very large, and there were more than a dozen people working there. The kitchen was divided into several rooms. In the corner of the largest preparation room, there was a clock. When Anna arrived, the clock showed 6:55.

When Anna arrived, she went to find Rebecca. Rebecca was busy tidying up last night’s banquet. Seeing Anna was here, she asked her to help.

Rebecca was only three years older than Anna, but had been working here for five years. She was an old worker trusted by Madam Mary. Her words and actions also seemed to resemble Madam Mary. She was only at the age of twenty, but always had a straight face and an unamenable look.

“Anna, you wash these napkins first, and I will teach you how to fold them later.” Rebecca said to Anna with a solemn face, “In the next few days, you must learn how to fold the napkins until I am satisfied.”

Anna nodded: “Okay, Rebecca.”

Rebecca first showed Anna how to wash the napkins and how to remove stubborn stains. Anna listened very carefully.

Because it was her first time to wash napkins, it took Anna half an hour to clean all ten napkins and dry them out. Rebecca checked her work and nodded without saying anything, but Anna knew that this meant that Rebecca was satisfied with her results.

As for the napkin folding that followed next, it was a piece of cake for Anna. She had dexterous fingers, good memory, and very good spatial imagination. After Rebecca demonstrated it once, she quickly got the hang of it.

Rebecca had planned to polish the cleaned silver tableware, but just as she polished one, Anna, who she had expected to take at least one or two hours to stack up a qualifying pile, came over with her work.

The napkin was folded into petals. Although it was the simplest request of a maid of the Earl’s estate kitchen, it was also relatively complicated. Rebecca did not expect Anna to fold it so quickly, and it looked very good.

“You folded it yourself?” Rebecca asked.

Anna nodded: “Yes, after memorizing the trick, it’s very simple.”

Rebecca was polishing the silver tableware. This was a very important job. Only a kitchen elder like her could touch it. So she thought about it and called another person over to teach Anna other folding patterns.

Seeing Anna’s concentration while studying, Rebecca also had a little more approval in her eyes.

When Rebecca finished her work, she walked to Anna to check her progress.

At this time, the maid who taught Anna had left, and only Anna was folding flowers there. At this moment, her hands were folding patterns that Rebecca had never seen before.

Rebecca coughed. Anna looked up and smiled: “Rebecca, I have finished learning.”

Even though she knew that Anna was a fast learner, Rebecca still couldn’t believe it after hearing about her progress at this moment.

It’s not that she hadn’t taught new people before, but it usually took about three days for them to learn a folding pattern like napkin flowers.

But right now, Anna was at most two hours in.

“Next, I will evaluate you. If you pass, you can continue to the next course of study.” Rebecca was still stern and did not show much emotion.

Anna put away her smile and nodded earnestly: “I’m ready.”

Rebecca’s assessment was very simple. She would name a napkin pattern and have Anna fold it. In Anna’s opinion, this was the same idea as being asked to spell English words from memory in middle school

There were a total of twenty kinds of napkin folding flowers. Rebecca tested her on three basic ones and three difficult ones, but Anna didn’t feel stumped.

Rebecca’s stern face couldn’t help showing a very faint smile: “Good job.”

“Thank you, the teacher taught me well.” Anna said modestly.

Rebecca nodded, did not say much, and then taught Anna about the placement of tableware.

There were also many rules here. The nobles had a lot of ways to eat. There were three or four sets of knives and forks. Different dishes required different tableware. Anna had to remember them all.

Compared with the various report data that Anna needed to remember in the past, these were all a piece of cake. She still learnt very quickly and successfully passed Rebecca’s assessment.

Rebecca thought that after she taught Anna, she could do her own thing, and let Anna practice the rest by herself. But because Anna learnt fast, Rebecca spent nearly half of the day teaching her.

Fortunately, Rebecca had taught many newcomers before, so she still had many things to teach.
