Mage (1)

“It seems to be very powerful… As you all know, I just came to the earl’s manor, and there’s a lot that I don’t know. Is the four-star mage very powerful?” Anna asked embarrassedly.

The three of them all wanted to please Anna, and they were willing to talk about this topic to show off how much they knew. On top of the fact that this topic was not taboo, a lively conversation started in which everyone joined in.

“Although we don’t have a mage association in Blue Rock City, I have seen a noble wizard before. He was very kind, and told me a lot.” Abigail said triumphantly, “Do you know that, in general, for an apprentice mage to become a four-star mage, it usually takes forty years, but that person became a four-star mage when he was only in his twenties. How amazing! Moreover, he is the son of a noble duke!”

Obviously that young four-star mage had nothing to do with her, but Abigail was a little arrogant when she said this, as if she was proud of him.

Anna hurriedly asked: “What is the Mage Association? What’s the level of a four-star mage? How are the levels divided?”

Not to be outdone, Fiona rushed to say: “The Mage Association is where the elemental mages learn, but we don’t have one in Blue Rock City. The most recent Mage Association was held in Green Pine City. Because we don’t have a Mage Association here, we rarely see mages. I heard that the earl manor recruited some mages as guests, but I have never seen any of them.”

“Mage likes to be alone; they don’t usually appear in the estate.” Abigail said, “The one over there only came a few days ago. I heard that he was recuperating, and that he was wounded by a demon! Oh, that’s right, when he came, Anna, you hadn’t arrived yet.”

“Hey, why did I hear that he was wounded by an assassination?” Kelly retorted.

“I heard it from Kanley. Who did you hear it from?”

“I don’t remember. Anyway, what I heard must be closer to the truth!”

“Hehe, what nonsense. Kanley was even praised by the master. How could what he says be false?”

Seeing Abigail and Kelly ridicule each other strangely for whose news was closer to the truth, Anna became more and more anxious.

They still haven’t said what level the four-star mage is! And what’s an elemental mage? Is Father Louis of the church a mage? Or was that another kind of power system?

It was a pity that the three still hadn’t finished arguing—That’s right, Anna didn’t know why, but Fiona somehow joined the other two maids’ war of words. The three people were disputing so fiercely even until Anna’s break was over. Seeing Rebecca beckoning to her from a distance, Anna had to say goodbye to the three of them and rush back.

When Anna left, the three were still arguing.

This was Anna’s second day at the earl estate, and she was still learning new things. Except for Parrish calling her to serve, Anna, as a newcomer, did not need to face the Lord of the estate.

She didn’t know if it was related to those “porcelain bumping”* incidents, but when studying in the kitchen, more people came over to talk to Anna. Most of them were inquiring about the relationship between her and Young Master Parrish.

*[碰瓷 or ‘porcelain bumping’ comes from the practice of dishonest shopkeepers placing a porcelain item in a spot where it was likely to get knocked over and broken, allowing them to claim damages from the “clumsy” customer. It’s modern meaning is: to fake/stage an accident for compensation]

Apart from clarifying that she had nothing to do with Young Master Parrish, Anna didn’t say anything else.

When Anna came to work on the third day, she felt that the impetuous air of yesterday had instantly calmed down.

Anna learned from the maids who worked in the kitchen that because there were too many people setting him up, Young Master Parrish had warned the head housekeeper of the estate. He was very angry and rounded up all the “porcelain bumping” maids to scold them together, and then deducted half a month’s salary.

After that, the estate calmed down again.

As Anna listened, she covered her mouth and made a look of surprise, perfectly showing the astonishing and innocent emotion of shock, and no one suspected that she was the initiator.

Even Abigail and the others thought that they had come up with this method to attract Young Master Parrish’s attention. They never thought that this was the result of Anna’s deliberately directing.

When sending breakfast to the demon for the third time, Anna couldn’t help but sigh. Even the demon was lazy, and liked to sleep in late—it was already past 11 o’clock when the demon’s personal servant Waldo came over and asked her to bring the breakfast over.

Anna only glanced at him briefly and didn’t dare to look at it any more. Today’s demon still looked super scary.

Today’s breakfast was as luxurious as usual. Anna stood respectfully to the side, watching the demon finish his breakfast.

Not wasting food was probably the only good trait of this demon.

Seeing that the demon had finished eating, Anna stepped forward to pack everything up, but just as she approached the table, she saw the demon suddenly holding his stomach, cold sweat appearing on his forehead.

Anna was startled. Did this demon want to frame her for poison? Was he impatient and wanted to put her in jail, so he could then force her to sign a contract with him in desperation, and get her soul that way?

Anna’s thoughts were racing, and cold sweat dripped down her forehead.

Waldo’s reaction was much more immediate. As he helped Young Master Parrish walk into the bedroom, he shouted to Anna: “Hurry up and find Father Louis!”

Anna left quickly, and when she stepped into the cold wind outside, she instantly became awake.

Maybe, the really powerful Father Louis could see the body of the demon and destroy him! Anyway, it’s not like she was the one who invited the priest to exorcise the demon. Even if the priest failed, the demon could not hold her accountable.

After all, in the eyes of the demon, she couldn’t possibly know that there was a demon hidden in Young Master Parrish’s body!
