Rejected the Demon’s Marriage Proposal Thousands of Times Chapter 17.1
New Gossip (1)
Anna could only save up to a gold coin’s worth after working an entire year in the Earl's estate. For ordinary civilians, they could work a whole year and not spend anything outside of living expenses, and might not even be able to save a silver coin’s worth of income. The other party wanted a gold coin; they were obviously using false accusations to blackmail them.
However, there was no law enforcement agency in this world. If there was a discrepancy, it could only be decided by the lord. But for the lord to make a ruling, three silver coins were needed each time. Ordinary civilians were generally reluctant and unable to fork over this money. The ones asking the lord to make a ruling were either commoners with money or regular small aristocrats.
In most cases, the rule of “the weak are an easy prey to the strong” was followed by the civilians in this world. Only if someone had a lot of people in their family, or if they were physically strong, could they protect their own interests.
In any area, the people always tend to gravitate toward stability, so some people relied on strength or fame to become a figure similar to the ancient east in mediating conflicts. Ordinary civilians would respect the "Master" and accept the "Master’s” ruling of the discrepancy.
The people on Pomegranate Lane were relatively simple. No vicious cases have occurred, and there was no established "master." Therefore, if Evan did not accept a gold coin requested by the other party, he could seek the ruling of the tavern owner Abbas, who was the "master" of that area.
Anna helped Gaea treat Evan's injury, but she couldn't help but feel distracted.
Bobby was most likely scared away by her words before, but went to find Lily and Renee later on. Compared to Lily's immaturity, her mother Renee's thoughts were certainly more vicious. The idea for Bobby to go to the tavern to make trouble this time was certainly thought of by Renee.
The follow-up request of a gold coin to this matter could explain a few things.
If the rumors were true that Young Master Parrish really wanted to marry her, then Parrish would certainly help her family take care of this problem. He would either directly pay up a gold coin or use his status as the lord's son to scare away the other party.
But if Anna's family couldn’t afford to pay, or if no one helped her family, it would prove that the rumors were just rumors. In this way, Bobby would no longer need to panic, and might even directly force her to marry.
No matter how useful Anna's brain was, she seemed to be incapable because of her lack of money.
She didn’t know how to solve Renee’s tavern setup, unless she actually asked Parrish to come forward and settle the rumors.
However, the rumors she made were still spreading in private. If she asked Parrish to come forward, of course, if he was willing or not to come forward was still a large question. Even if he was really willing...he would definitely find out about that "rumor", and she couldn’t guess what his reaction to it would be.
Parrish usually seemed to be affectionate in calling her ‘dear’, but when she asked him to teach her literacy, he refused so simply. She didn't really think he was illiterate; it was probably more so that he just didn't want to teach a maid. He probably thought she was unworthy.
She could be favored and ridiculed by him as a woman, but she could not, as an equal, enjoy the knowledge that belonged only to the upper class. Parrish was a nobleman; she was just a commoner.
Anna was in deep thought when she heard Evan say: "I'll go to Master Abbas and ask him to mediate. That person's injury can be cured with only three silver coins, and we can afford it."
Gaea replied, "Okay, I'll go with you."
Anna washed the linen towels in clean water, listening silently to the discussion between the two.
On the side, Jim sat steadily on the ground, looking at Evan with his unblinking eyes. Adele took little Evan’s hand and looked at her father in fear and worry. She wanted to cry but, at the same time, didn’t dare to.
Her eyes were red and wet, and she looked very pitiful. Little Evan didn't know what exactly was going on. The child was lethargic. He held Adele's hand, his body taken over, bit by bit, by sleep.
Anna poured away the dirty water. She came over to pick up little Evan, and said to Adele: "Adele, it's time for you and little Evan to go to bed, let's go."
Little Evan hugged Anna's neck tightly, and Adele hurried over to hold Anna's skirt as they walked to the bedroom.
Anna looked back at Jim again; he stood up quickly from where he was sitting, patted the dust off his body, and followed behind them.
After arranging the three of them in bed, Anna walked out of the bedroom again.
When Evan and Gaea had finished discussing. Anna sat down next to them. She looked at them and said, "I'm sorry, Mama, Papa. I’ve caused you to worry over me."
Gaea waved to Anna; Anna lifted the stool under her body and moved over. Gaea hugged her and said with a gentle voice: "You are our daughter, don't say such silly things."
Evan patted Anna's head. He rarely made such affectionate movements, so he seemed a little uncomfortable.
"Papa will protect Anna." Evan assured Anna.
When Anna was dealing with the demon, she couldn't tell the truth to others. She carried all the pressure on her own, which made her mood constantly a little depressed. Now, she was comforted by Evan and Gaea. She couldn't help but tear up a little, and hugged them.
She was so happy that she had such a family to support her.
