“Hahaha!” I laughed while watching what the little vampire did in my world. She was definitely the right spirit to choose. “I wonder how this will shake the foundation of the world. You won’t be alone for long, little one! The residents of this world will be introduced to the second sin soon enough if my calculations are correct.” I looked over to the budding seed of gluttony on the other side of the world. “I can’t just have the sins running rampant… lets see… Oh!” The face of a wolfkin appeared on the screen in front of me. “I see, I see! You will be granted a boon as well. I hope you are able to use it wisely.”

I started to head down the dirt road towards the next village. I was hoping to find something unique from the people I would encounter. Learning more and more about the world was everything I strived for. I walked for hours down the path until I finally started to see more wooden and thatch buildings. By the time I got to the village the sun was beating down on me. The people were going about their day as I approached. I saw several people taking buckets of water from their houses. What was it for? When I got close enough two people wearing pelts approached me.

“Where are you coming from little missy? I have never seen a girl with silver hair before.” The two people were wearing makeshift pelt armor, and they both had wooden spears with a stone point at the end. I wasn’t going to start something immediately. “I came from the forest after being chased by a monster!”

Shock filled their faces with my exclamation. “What kind of monster was it, young lady!? Forgive me, but we need to know in case it comes this way.” I stretched my arms as far as they could go. “It was this big, and it was green and scary!” People of the village started to gather, and I could hear their whispers as I explained more. “They had pointed ears, and there were a bunch of them!”

“I see, you probably ran into some goblins.” The second man said before smiling at me. “It is nothing to worry about now that you are here.” He pointed at his spear. “Me and this thing here can take them. Why don’t you follow me to old Edna’s house? I am Kirn by the way, and this is my friend Ulof. We can take you in. If you have nowhere else to go then Edna is the woman to talk to. Hey! You guys, stop gawking, and allow me to escort the poor girl!” He yelled at the people who had gathered before gesturing to follow.

I followed him and as I did, I noticed more things about the village. The place had wooden and thatch huts just like the last village, and the people mostly wore pelts from various animals. There were about 18 huts that I counted, and I could guess that there were about 40-60 people living here. I never really counted them individually. I only cared to learn what they knew. To be like them, I had to blend in.

He led me towards a hut at the back of the village. It wasn’t special. Much like the others it was a simple round hut. It was a little smaller than the average size for a hut, so I guessed this woman must live alone. We got to the entrance of the hut before Kirn stopped walking. “This is where I let you off. I am sure Edna will be kind to you as long as you are honest with her. I have work to do, so I hope you and her will get along.” He finished by ruffling my hair. Then he went back towards the entrance of the village. I thought he was probably just a village guard.

I opened the door to the hut and entered. “Is Edna here!?” I called out into the hut, but I really didn’t have to as there was only one room. “Yes, that is me, little one. Are you the cause of all of the noise this morning?” She sat slouched on a pelt of some kind, and in front of her was a small wooden table. She had a leaf cup on the table that she was drinking a strange red liquid from. Her face was old and wrinkled, and she had gray hair. One of her eyes was glazed over with white; the other was a normal brown color. Much like the chief of the last village she also had a pipe in front of her on the table, and the place smelled strange. I didn’t know the smell, but it was new to me. I smiled as I greeted her.

“I just came into the village today, and Kirn told me to come see you.” She put her hand to her chin in thought. “What did Kirn tell you about me?” She started to empty the contents of the pipe onto the table by smacking the pipe against it. Resin started to paint that part of the table with a black color. “He didn’t say much, but he said you could house me. I was running from some monsters before I came here. Please, I need to stay here.”

She loaded her pipe with a ground up green plant. The tip of her finger sparked above the greenery setting it ablaze. I opened my mouth in shock at the display before me. It was my first time ever seeing someone use magic with my eyes. “Edna, can you use magic?”

“Aye, that is what it is, but I am surprised you know of it. Most of the people here have no idea what a magician even is. They choose to stick to their spears rather than learning the way of divinity passed down by our goddess. I will tell you what little lady. I will let you stay here with a condition.” She smirked at me before taking a hit of her pipe. I tilted my head at her. “What is the condition?”

“Well first of all, I can tell you are not human, so you can drop the act with me.” I wondered how she noticed, but it was probably my red eyes and fangs that gave it away. The people at this village were awfully trusting of someone that wasn’t human, or it was only this lady that caught on. “That I am not.”

“Well what are you? I need to know the species of someone who is going to stay with me.” I didn’t know the word for my species, if there was one, but she needed an answer. I answered half truthfully. “I was a spirit, and then one day I became what I am today.” She raised her brow at what I had said.

“So you are a demon? I have never heard of any demons that can speak though… Then again the only demon I know of is Ifrit. Well, if you are a demon that is even more interesting.” I shrugged my shoulders at her. “I don’t know what I am, but I suspect that I am the only one of my race.”

“You are the only one of your race? This…this…this is amazing!” Her yelling made her have a coughing fit. It took several minutes for her coughing to calm down before she was able to speak again. “Haa… this old bag can barely get excited before she goes into a cough that might be her last.” She finished with a hearty laugh. This woman was definitely not alright in the head.

“Right, your condition for staying here…How about you tell me what it is like being a spirit?” I tilted my head at the question. “I never really thought about it, but I knew that I didn’t like it. I always wanted to be like the mortal races. You all are able to have things that I cannot. I always thought ‘why do they get everything, and I don’t’?”

“Over here we call that, envy. It is one of the sins that the goddess gave us. We are all imperfect, and envy is what I believe you have experienced. Maybe the goddess gave you something that changed your body?” I see, so the word to describe what I feel is envy?

“By the way, do you have a name? Do spirits have names?” I wasn’t sure if I had a name, and there was nothing that would tell me. The conversation did give me an idea though. “I never had a name. What if I just use ‘envy’?” I showed my fangs as I finished, and in the next moment I was in front of her. She didn’t look at me with a hint of fear. She simply smiled instead. “You really are a poor soul. The goddess may bless you, but the path you walk will be one of sorrow.” She had so much knowledge that I yearned for, and those were the last words before I drained her blood.
