Once Huang Xieli and the other consorts were pardoned to leave, they almost ran away to get away from the 4 dead bodies in the hall and the bloodied sword in Tian Chen’s hand.

The guards cleaned the scene and Tian Chen returned the sword back to Li Feng. He went to Xue Lan to offer a hand.

“You may rise.”

Xue Lan didn’t accept it, “This subject does not dare.”

Tian Chen stiffened and lowered his fisted hand, “Does Prince Xue fear Our hands now?”

“This subject only fears of bringing misfortune to Your Majesty’s prosperous life,” Xue Lan lowered his head further. “Your Majesty, I would rather be resented by you than to cause damage by receiving your generous care. Please, reconsider before it is too late.”

Tian Chen felt his chest tighten.

This man’s words always dripped with the sweetest honey and flowed with the gentlest melody. He always seemed to know the things he desired to hear when most of the time he himself didn’t.

“Rise, Prince Xue,” Tian Chen tilted Xue Lan’s face up by his chin.

Xue Lan slowly stood up. His legs were numb with pins and needles, causing him to stagger.

Without needing to be told, Mo Shen delayed his reaction, letting Tian Chen catch Xue Lan.

“Apologies, Your Majesty,” Xue Lan pushed himself away from Tian Chen.

But the other didn’t let go.

“Where did you go to earlier in the day, Prince Xue?”

“Answering Your Majesty, this subject went to find some paintings to decorate my chamber.”

Tian Chen gazed at the thin lips opening and closing as Xue Lan spoke, “We are not short of exquisite paintings in this palace. You may take whichever fancies your eyes.”

“…This subject believes that is not quite appropriate, Your Majesty. I am merely nothing but a guest now,” Xue Lan looked away.

Standing at the side with Li Feng, Mo Shen regretted not bringing any melon seeds to watch the drama. On the other hand, Li Feng couldn’t bear seeing the lovestruck emperor any longer and silently retreated.

“You are Our beloved Honorable Prince,” Tian Chen gently turned Xue Lan’s face back to him. “The title We bestow grants you partial rights to the treasury.”

He couldn’t stop himself anymore and leaned to connect their lips. But when they were just a breath away, Xue Lan raised his fan, erecting a screen between them.

“Your Majesty, we must not…” Xue Lan forcefully broke away and saluted. “Your Majesty must be confused from stress. This subject will return first to prepare a blood-enriching soup for you.”

“Why must we not?” Tian Chen caught Xue Lan’s wrist, preventing him from leaving. “Why do you keep denying your heart?”

“…If Your Majesty wills me to return into your harem, this subject will gladly comply.”

“You are very much aware that that is not Our intention,” Tian Chen’s hold tightened.

“This subject does not dare to boldly assume Your Majesty’s intention,” Xue Lan struggled to free his hand.

This was getting ridiculous and annoying.

Tian Chen’s words were stopped when Xue Lan’s knees gave out. He reached out to grab his waist, but this time, Mo Shen caught him first.

“My Lord, you have reached your limit,” Mo Shen carried him up by his knees. “It is time to rest.”

Xue Lan looked at Tian Chen briefly and lowered his gaze. Mo Shen promptly brought him away.

Tian Chen, “…”

He rubbed his fingers on his palm, savouring the lingering sensation of Xue Lan’s skin.

Why must they not?

What was Xue Lan’s fear?

Was it merely because of their background and situation or was there something else?

When Xue Lan and Mo Shen were outside, they saw a palanquin awaiting for them at the bottom of the steps. The head eunuch announced that it was Xue Lan’s personal palanquin, a gift from Tian Chen.

He was sent back to his residence and returned to his room. Mo Shen settled Xue Lan on the couch before going to the kitchen to make his late lunch.

There were still some ingredients left from the summer hunt and he used the rest of them to make the meal.

Mo Shen was coming out of the kitchen when his foot stepped on a paper. He bent down to pick it up and checked the content before entering the house.

“You are truly cruel, My Lord,” he put down the tray with a chuckle. “How much further do you wish to make Tian Chen fall?”

Xue Lan picked up the chopsticks, “As further as one can get.”

“It’s basically a steep slope by now,” Mo Shen said as he handed the paper he found to Xue Lan. “A sigh of yours can roll him down easily.”

Xue Lan took the paper and read it. He folded it back and put it aside, “If he wants to meet, then let him come. Why should we answer his summon?”

“My Lord, do you plan on being on Qian Jin’s side for now?”

“The fall of Qi Ming is not something we need to prevent. We only need to make sure of our innocence when that time comes,” Xue Lan ate his meal.

“What about Huang Xieli and Qing Meilin? Are we going to let Tian Chen deal with them for us?”

“No, I won’t be satisfied that way,” Xue Lan unhesitantly said. “Although it’s convenient, the purpose of seducing Tian Chen isn’t to be our executioner. I want them to go through what they made me go through.”

Mo Shen was satisfied with Xue Lan’s answer, “The appetizer is almost done and the main dish is being cooked. Such a feast, My Lord is truly gluttonous.”

Xue Lan didn’t deny it as he calmly chewed his food.

In the evening, his courtyard was visited by a guest. The consort’s face was solemn and indignant. He didn’t think Xue Lan wouldn’t come to the meeting point without any excuse.

He was simply humiliating him.

Was the prince always this willful?

A servant informed Mo Shen of his arrival, but it took the other a full half an hour before welcoming them.

“High Consort Tang, forgive me for the delay. My master’s leg needed some massages,” Mo Shen gestured to the house. “Please, come in.”

Tang Zhuo entered the front hall and saw Xue Lan sitting by the window with tea readily prepared between the two chairs. He took a seat across Xue Lan and saluted.

“Good evening, Fifth Prince,” he faked a smile. “I fear that my intention to speak with you failed to be conveyed and took the liberty to come to visit you personally. I hope I’m not disturbing your rest.”

“It is inappropriate for me to have a secret rendezvous with His Majesty’s consort. High Consort Tang, you may state your business and leave,” Xue Lan sipped his tea.

Tang Zhuo’s eyebrow twitched.

He was told that the Fifth Prince was useless and he could use him as cannon fodder if must. It was fine if he was just useless, but he didn’t expect the prince would get smitten by the Emperor.

Did he really not know who he was even after calling him ‘Fifth Prince’?

“Fifth Prince, you may drop the act. I’m here under the Defense Minister’s order. I believe you bought a painting this earlier in the day?”

Xue Lan fleetingly glanced at Mo Shen and the other gave a slight nod.

“Yes, I did,” Xue Lan put down his teacup. “Unfortunately, it got stolen on my way back home. Even my carriage was damaged by those thieves so my attendant needed to carry me all the way back.”

Tang Zhuo frowned, “…Stolen?”

But Han Jinli failed to steal it back.

“It is a precious antique from Jin Period after all. Those thieves will undoubtedly resell it at a sky-high price. I have sent people to look for it,” Xue Lan slowly fanned himself. “Consort Tang, what does the Defense Minister have anything to do with it?”

“Fifth Prince, you truly do not think that you are sent here to be the Emperor’s dog, no?” Tang Zhuo looked at Xue Lan incredulously. “You are supposed to retrieve as much intel as possible from the Emperor’s bed. Have you not been specially trained for that? That painting is an important clue for our success and you lost it. Even the Emperor’s head will not be able to make up for it.”

Xue Lan’s motion stopped.

Even without seeing Xue Lan’s darkening face, Mo Shen knew Tang Zhuo had touched his master’s reverse scale. With the contract binding them, he could clearly feel the dark emotion crawling up from Xue Lan’s abyss.

Tang Zhuo sensed something was wrong with the decreasing temperature. When he saw Xue Lan’s constricted pupils at him, his body jerked to stand up. All the cells in his blood were telling him to run.

But he couldn’t.

His body was trapped by a crushing pressure onto his seat.
