Xue Lan strolled the palace ground with Mo Shen as usual. When he was out of inspiration and wasn’t in the mood to read, he used the time to memorize the palace’s layout and daily activity. He already had the map in his head, so it was a pretty simple thing to do.

Not that he needed to with Mo Shen by his side but might as well.

“Are you not going to seduce Tian Chen again, My Lord?” Mo Shen asked.

“The situation is now I’m currently avoiding him because of our previous conversation,” Xue Lan replied.

“You should try writing scripts for plays,” Mo Shen tutted. “Who knows? Maybe you’ll get extra income.”

“If I am in the mood for it, maybe I’ll try. Still, we have indeed idled around long enough,” Xue Lan looked in a direction on his left. “Shall we trigger the next scene?”

“No objection here,” Mo Shen led Xue Lan to the training ground.

At this time of the day, the Emperor would be practising his archery. It depended on the day between archery, swordsmanship, and horse-riding, but except for the last one, the other two were conducted in the training ground.

When they arrived, they saw that there were two people, one male and one female, by Tian Chen’s side who were neither his attendants nor eunuchs.

From their clothes, Xue Lan recognized them as concubines. He recalled that they once pushed him into the pond after ripping his robe.

They didn’t plot anything special against him, but they bullied him with several other concubines under a certain consort’s leadership.

“Are they our next actors?” Mo Shen was unimpressed.

“Side characters, I suppose,” Xue Lan said in a flat tone. “They’re not worth the effort.”

“Isn’t that what I said?” Mo Shen’s eyes flickered red. “Just give me the order and everything will be done, My Lord.”

“I didn’t expect a demon is so merciful towards their prey,” Xue Lan continued walking forward.

He had just walked two steps when Mo Shen suddenly swung his arm in. He was jerked back by the swift movement and Mo Shen pulled him in further by his waist.

He heard the air whistling behind him and a loud thud ensued from the tree on his far right side. When he turned to look, he saw that a small arrow had pierced itself into a tree trunk.

“Well, prey or not, you almost became a wild game, My Lord,” Mo Shen chuckled.

Xue Lan, “…”

“Tian Chen’s coming,” Mo Shen prompted.

Xue Lan shifted back from Mo Shen’s chest, returning to their previous position.

Because Mo Shen kept bathing with him, he smelled almost exactly the same as him. He didn’t know if it was a demon’s natural odour or something, but Mo Shen also had this lingering scent of ambrosia on him.

He put his thought away and saluted at Tian Chen with Mo Shen, “This subject greets the Emperor.”

“Rise,” Tian Chen prompted. “Honorable Consort Xue, you must be rather shocked. Did Our arrow cause you harm?”

“Answering Your Majesty, this subject is still being watched over by his ancestors. They have saved me from the misfortune,” Xue Lan shook his head.

Tian Chen nodded. His attendant pulled out the arrow and returned it to him. He looked back at Xue Lan.

“Join Us in Our practice, Honorable Consort Xue.”

“This subject is afraid to get in the way of Your Majesty’s training,” Xue Lan didn’t directly accept the invitation.

“That will be for Us to decide,” Tian Chen offered his hand. “Or are you going to refuse Us the third time?”

Xue Lan wasn’t seriously refusing anyway, so he humbly accepted. Whether he liked it or not, he took Tian Chen’s hand.

He could walk by himself for such a short distance, but Tian Chen’s previous words made him unable to reject his hand.

Rather than following Mo Shen’s example, Tian Chen served no purpose in holding his hand. It made his walk more difficult instead since he had to match Tian Chen’s pace. He hid his exasperation and annoyance behind his fan.

If it wasn’t for the robe Mo Shen tailored for him, he would’ve tripped several times already.

Once they arrived at where Tian Chen was practising earlier, the male concubine was already kneeling on the ground. It was he who touched the crossbow placed aside on the table and accidentally launched the arrow.

“This concubine begs your forgiveness for his grave mistake. Honourable Consort Xue, please punish this lowly concubine as you see fit,” the male concubine deeply apologized.

Xue Lan gazed down at him and briefly glanced at the female concubine. He could see that the male concubine wasn’t feeling any guilt and the female concubine knew exactly what was going on.

“It is only an untimely accident and none is injured. Do not mind it too much,” Xue Lan took the chance to let go of Tian Chen’s hand, seemingly to help the male concubine stand back up.

He smoothly returned to Mo Shen and stood aside to let Tian Chen continue his practice.

The concubines looked at one another and shifted back to their prior position as well. They were tasked to hand new arrows to Tian Chen and clean the ones the attendants returned from the target.

Every time Tian Chen hit the bullseye, all the people around them praised him to high heaven.

Xue Lan could see that Mo Shen had a lot of things he wanted to comment on. His lips that naturally smiled even dropped to a flat line from holding back his cringe.

“Would you like to sit down, My Lord?” Mo Shen finally decided to shift his attention.

Xue Lan silently hid his small smile behind his fan. His eyes then inadvertently met with Tian Chen who was accepting a new arrow. He quickly looked away.

Mo Shen inwardly applauded Xue Lan’s performance. He was certain that Tian Chen thought Xue Lan felt bashful being caught smiling at him.

His master was truly wonderful.

They had been standing there for almost 15 minutes and he soon noticed Xue Lan’s discomfort. He promptly knelt down on one knee for him to sit on.

Xue Lan grabbed Mo Shen’s shoulder for support as he slowly bent his knee to sit down. When Tian Chen noticed him, he was about to say something but Mo Shen beat him to it.

“Please excuse my master, Your Majesty. He insisted to watch until you finish your practice, so this servant can only force him to sit so as to not damage his legs further,” Mo Shen lowered his head slightly. “This servant will gladly take punishment in his master’s stead.”

Tian Chen raised his hand, “It is unnecessary. We have indeed prolonged Our time in today’s practice.”

He put away the bow in his hands and dismissed everyone. The attendants cleared the equipment and left to prepare his lunch.

Xue Lan glanced at Mo Shen and the other gave him a light wink. Mo Shen stood up while supporting his waist, smoothly bringing him along back to his feet.

He felt like Mo Shen was particularly handsome today.

Not that the demon was ever ugly.

After seeing Mo Shen’s visuals every day, Tian Chen’s face became average at most. The Emperor’s sharp, heroic features that everyone praised about were dull in his eyes.

“If you keep staring at me like that for 3 more seconds, Tian Chen will notice,” Mo Shen teasingly said.

Xue Lan averted his eyes, “Teach those concubines what it feels like to have their eyes pierced by an arrow.”

”With pleasure,” Mo Shen looked at where the concubines left.

Later that night, a flock of ravens would appear above the concubines’ shared palace to feast on the 2 pairs of eyeballs by the roof.

Tian Chen invited Xue Lan to have lunch with him and they went to the nearest pavilion where the meal was all set.

“Honorable Consort Xue, might you be willing to tell Us what is wrong with your legs and how they came to be?” Tian Chen asked as they ate.

“…It is merely a flaw from birth, Your Majesty,” Xue Lan lowered his gaze.

In his last life, he was tortured after he tried to escape back to his country. One of the permanent results was his broken legs. On the day of his execution, the injury became worse since he disregarded them to bring along as many people with him to death.

Mo Shen had already warned him that his injuries would be brought along to his past body and he agreed regardless.

He was ready to not be able to walk, but Mo Shen lightened his injuries somehow.

Tian Chen saw that Xue Lan didn’t intend to talk about it. This man’s life as a prince prior to this might not be as blessed as he thought it was.

“We will send the Royal Physician to see to it after our meal,” he decided.

But Xue Lan’s response wasn’t what he expected.

Xue Lan’s chopsticks stopped their motion and he silently put them down. The expression on his face was complicated and he finally spoke with a depressed gaze.

“Please do not be too nice to this subject, Your Majesty,” Xue Lan forced a smile. “This subject does not wish to accidentally fall in love.”
