Chapter 17: Stars

The red carriage traveled across the streets of Coupitia city. It didn't take much time to reach its destination, the only orphanage inside this city. Inside the carriage, was Asvin Cavias, as well as a young boy called Matthew.

"Are you perhaps afraid? You don't have to be, it's true that there are bullies inside the orphanage, just like I told you before, but, with your spell, Fire Bolt, well, let's just say, that all you have to do is show it to them once, and they won't dare bother you again, ever!", said Asvin to the young boy sitting across him.

Matthew smiled as he looked at the young man before him, he said, "No! That wasn't what I was thinking about, I was just thinking about how I will miss seeing Terria, and Sonia, as for the bullies, I can deal with them just fine!".

Asvin nodded, "Hah! Guess I don't have to worry about you, since you're this confident in yourself, as for that matter, well, you just have to wait about four, or five days a week, before they come visit you, I will also ask the orphanage to allow you to visit our place once a week!".

"Thank you, big bro Vin! And, well, I wanted to ask about who's going to train Terria, and Sonia, in swordsmanship? Will it be you? Or your father? The Fierce Lion, lord John Cavias? I honestly think both are good candidates, since you also proved to be very strong yesterday!", asked Matthew, and then proceeded to compliment him.

Asvin's expression darkened once more, as he remembered the terrible last night, he said in a low apologetic voice, "I am sorry that I didn't arrive earlier to save the other three children, and I am sorry that I didn't stay to save others, it's just that I couldn't leave you three to die there!".

"But also, I was scared for my life, that was the first time I was in an actual battle, I have killed before, but, I haven't gone through a battle, and especially one against Mages, and not just any Mages, but ones from the Black Tower!".

Asvin took a small breath, before he continued, "I was scared I would end up dying, hmm! Do you know about the Star system used by the Black Tower?", asked Asvin, since he couldn't explain why he was scared to fight.

The young boy shook his head, indicating that he didn't know about this Star system. Asvin then started to explain, he said, "Okay, I won't complicate this for you, the Black Tower, gives you a Star numbre to represent how powerful you are, they start from the 0th Star, a member that's new, and is very weak as a Magician!".

"Typically, these 0th Stars, are a little stronger than normal trained guards, and could probably take on more than 5, or more guards at the same moment! Then, we have a First Star, those are the Magicians that are very strong, and are as strong as a lowly noble's Chief Guard! They are also the rank of the two I killed yesterday to save you, and the Manos, well, now they are the Cavias sisters!".

"Anyway, that's not important now, next, we have the Second Star, people at this level, are as strong as me, some of them are even stronger than me, these people pose quite a big danger, and I suspect that the person they sent as a leader yesterday, was also a Second Star, ahm! Are you following so far?".

Matthew nodded, he had understood most of what was said, but didn't get the full picture. What he understood was, '0th Star, are like 5 guards, or, mom, First star, like dad, and Second Star, like big bro Vin, but then, what about the Fierce Lion, and the Green Mage, in what Star would they be ranked?'.

Asvin nodded, then continued, "So, since there were a lot of 0th, and First Stars, there was even a Second Star, I wouldn't have stood a chance against all of them, also, I am not even sure I could win against a Second Star, since I never fought against one, it's only father, who has faced against some of the Black Tower Magicians before, that told me so!".

"From what he said, at my current power level, I am as strong as a Second Star, and since I wasn't sure I would win against the leader of that group, and well, even if I could, it wasn't like I was going to be fighting against him alone, I prioritized saving you three instead, and so, I am deeply sorry for your loss!".

Matthew smiled, as he gently punched Asvin's shoulder. He looked at the young man, and said, "Why are you apologizing? You saved me, Terria, and Sonia! You saved all three of us, you shouldn't be apologizing, you should be hearing my thanks! Thank you, big bro Vin! Because if you hadn't come yesterday, I wouldn't be talking to you now!".

Asvin felt like a heavy weight, that was constantly making him feel guilt all day long, had just been lifted off his shoulder, he finally accepted the young boy's thanks, and nodded to himself. 'I will work to become stronger, and if there is another event such as this, I will make sure to save everyone this time around!'.

The carriage continued forward, until, after about 15 minutes had passed since it went out of the gate belonging to the Cavias family main mansion, it had finally arrived to its destination. Asvin and Matthew got out of the carriage, only to find a servant waiting for the two of them. This was a person wearing normal clothes, and was a worker inside the only orphanage of Coupitia city.

He saluted Asvin, as he said, "Welcome, heir to the Cavias family leadership! I wonder what brings you here today, hmm? Who's this young boy with you?", the man was a little confused, since it wasn't every day that you saw the heir to the Cavias family walk to your establishment.

Asvin smiled, as he greeted the man in front of him, before saying, "Well, this is the reason I am here! His name is Matthew, and, well...", Asvin felt a little weird, and couldn't really bring himself to say that word, and so, Matthew spoke instead.

"Hello! My name is Matthew, and I am an orphan, I lost my parent's yesterday to the Black Tower's attack, I come from Ronia village, nice to meet you good sir!". Asvin was a little surprised to hear the manner in which Matthew spoke.

His father, who had worked as the Chief Guard of a lowly noble before, had taught him to speak fluently, and in a good manner, befitting a young boy. Making him look like he came from a noble family.

The man was also a bit surprised, before he opened his eyes, and looked clearly at Matthew. Only then, did the great, and real shock reach him. He staggered backward, and was close to falling, if it wasn't for Asvin who managed to support the man.

Asvin asked, a little confused, "Is something wrong?". But, only after he asked, did he realize that he had just asked a stupid question. He had gotten so used to the sight, that he forgot that other people would be very shocked by the appearance of such a boy.

The man let out a gasp, as he said under his breath, "Impossible, how could he? How does he have such a... This doesn't make any sense, unless...", the man then quickly turned to look at Asvin who was by his side, and he asked, "Well, is he a noble?".

But Asvin's answer made the man's head tremble even more, it was a shook of a head. 'Hah! I guess the rumors were true then, not only the nobles were blessed by the One Power, there are cases, where commoners like us, are also blessed by the One Power! First, it was the Green Mage, and now, this young boy standing in front of me at the moment!'.

There were many currents of the One Power floating around Matthew, and they whipped strongly, and violently. This made Matthew appear terrifying to a normal person who could see the One Power.

The man finally regained his composure, as he said, "Ahm! Anyway, I heard that you passed by Ronia village yesterday, and came back today with three children, but I see only one, where are the other two, or did I hear wrong?".

Asvin smiled as he said, "No, you heard right, I did come back with three children, but two of them have been adopted into my family, we will send someone to deal with making the thing official tomorrow, and so, the only one that will come to the orphanage, is, well, this young boy here!".

"Please take care of him, he's one of the people I saved, and his sisters are my sisters now, so it would be better for all of us, if nothing happened to him! Like for instance, being abused by an adult, is that understood? And just to warn you, I will be coming to check on him every week, if he complains to me about anything, well, I don't need to remind you who my father is, do I now?".

The man felt his body shrink slightly, as he gulped, when he thought about the identity of this young man's father. "The Fierce Lion", one of the 17 Pillars of the kingdom, he couldn't help but shiver a little.

The man nodded his head heavily at Asvin, who then looked at Matthew, and said, "See, you don't have to worry about living inside here, it's true that my father didn't adopt you, but trust me, he would burn this entire place down if I asked him to do so, remember, he's only a little weaker than the likes of the Green Mage!".

"Anyway, this is it, this is goodbye, hope you feel comfortable here, and well, have a good day!". With that, Asvin mounted the red carriage, and after he heard Matthew say goodbye to him as well, the red carriage started moving, until it slowly disappeared.
