'Almost two days of traveling together, and he hasn't spoken a single word the entire time. All he does is sit around or lie down in the carriage with a gloomy look. He's just making this entire trip extremely uncomfortable. Either way, I don't think I'm gonna get any relationship points for just taking him with me without speaking to him, so I guess I've gotta be the one to start talking.'

"Hey, boy, it's only a couple hours from now, we should be there shortly before sunset", Aurora tells him.

"Great", Echo replies without even moving his gaze in her direction.

'He's not gonna make this easy, is he? Ugh.'

"So, you're still don't want to tell me why you're even headed for the capital?", she asks.

Silence.

"Nice, you seem to really appreciate me helping you get there.", she says ironically.

Silence.

'Fine, no talking then, you stupid br-'

"It's not like I'm not grateful for you help. I just...", he pauses, and sighs, "I just got a lot on my mind right now. And my reason for going there is personal, so I won't just tell anyone who comes along and asks."

Aurora is left speechless for a while. Just when she thought he really was just some ungrateful, stupid boy, he drops this sentimental explanation for his behavior on her. How is she supposed to be pissed at him now?

'This boy better not just be making things up so that he doesn't have to talk to me.', she thinks to herself.

"Alright, no talking about your reasons. But I do wonder, do you even have a place to stay or money to rent one? I mean, you didn't even know if you were heading the right way, and with the way you look, I wouldn't exactly assume that you're rich.", she wonders.

Echo rises from his sleeping position and leans his back against one of the chests on the carriage, sitting upright.

"What are you talking about? I'm just gonna ask someone if I can sleep over at their place for the night.", he replies nonchalantly.

"Why do I always come back to thinking you're stupid?! Do you really think someone would just let you sleep at their place for free? Most people wouldn't even give you a free ride!", she replies, aggravated by his ignorance.

"Are the people of the capital really that greedy?"

"Greedy? It's not greedy if they don't wanna do something they get nothing for in return. Who would do that?"

"Well, in my village we always let travelers stay the night for free, and we even feed them with our best meat!", he replies proudly, but his expression suddenly turns grim again as he slumps his shoulders a little. "We had always done this, anyway."

'He sound depressed. Did something happen in his village? Is that his backstory? That could turn out really interesting, I haven't had many interesting backstories yet, and the way he slowly reveals information, it's so exciting!', Aurora thinks to herself happily. 'Best not to overdo it with trying to get more info.'

"That's great for you, but the people there are entirely different."

"That's too bad. I'll just sleep on the streets then, it's not that cold right now anyway.", he decides.

"If you want to get chased  down by the guards, that's a great idea", she mocks him.

"I'm starting to get the feeling I'm going to dislike the capital even more than I expected. Since you know so much about it, why don't you tell me how I'm supposed to stay there?"

"Normally I'd tell you that you're a fool for going there in you're state, without any knowledge or connections. Actually, stretch that, I'm gonna tell you now: You're a fool."

"Thank you for the insight!", Echo replies sarcastically.

"But, you're in luck. I can let you stay at my place, but I expect you to do some work for it.", Aurora offers him.

"Why would you let me stay at your place? What are you planing?", he asks suspiciously.

"If you're not gonna tell me your reasons for going to the capital, I'm not gonna tell you mine either. You can decline of course, but I wouldn't bet on anyone else offering you a place to stay."

"Alright, I'm gonna stay at your place for the start then. But I'm telling you already, your acting seriously suspicious. I'm gonna go back to sleep now, so wake me up when we've arrived."

"How can you sleep so much? Except for eating and drinking, you haven't done much else since you joined up with me."

Silence.

'Wow. Well, no matter, I think my relationship with him is improving. Too bad we only have levels for abilities and stats, and none for relationships. That would make it way easier.', she ponders.

Meanwhile, Echo lies in the back with his eyes closed. But he's not sleeping. Far from it. He spends his time focusing on the Mana flow inside his body, trying to get more and faster control of it, and the jolting carriage is perfect for increasing the difficulty. He has to use every chance he gets to improve, or he'll never catch up to the summoned.
