I went to bed really early, mostly out of frustration. Why can't they just be happy for me? I get it that they want to tease me, but this is difficult for me. Does Kenji really like me? Was he serious about the date? And I still don't know why mother Ima didn't just tell me what was about to happen, when I saw her at the temple.

At breakfast, father reminded me that he had selected two personal guards for me. Yes, apparently I was originally supposed to select them myself, but were out of time. Mother made sure that they were women, blending in like close friends, but always there to protect me.

After breakfast, Nanami and I were in my study room, waiting for my new personal guards to arrive.

I sat at my desk while Nana was standing next to me.

There was a loud knock on the door. "Enter!" I said.

Then a bear-kin and a kitsune with white fur entered my study. They both saluted and the bear-kin said "your personal guards have arrived, princess. How may we be of service?"

I replied "alright ladies, close the door and then be at ease." After closing the door, they both stood in a more relaxed way.

I then walked towards them, stopping right in front of them. "Relax!" I softly said while giving them my warmest smile. Both of them smiled back.

Good, first test passed.

"My father has selected you two to become my personal guards. Are you willing to do this job, or......"

"Yes ma'am!" they both said at the same time.

I smiled. "Good to hear. Okay, you first. Forgive my asking, but are you perhaps bear-kin?"

"Yes, princess, indeed I am. My name is Tomoko. I have always been the shortest at home, so I can understand your confusion. Ah, and my specialties are stealth attacks and hand to hand combat. Not so good with weapons though."

"And you, may I have your name?" I asked. She noticed me staring at her fur.

"Yes, princess. My name is Minako. I am a Kitsune, but white fur is normal in my family. My archery skills are above average, but I still need to train a lot. Good with daggers too, but not any other weapons or close combat so far."

"Good. Nice to meet the both of you.  Hmm, do you know each other perhaps?"

"If I may, yes princess. We are friends. We decided to come to the capital together. To be selected here, both of us at the same time for the same job is a miracle!" Tomoko said.

"Ladies, it is important that you both call me Greya. Not princess or something like that. Unless of course we are in a more formal setting. The idea is that we appear to be friends, no, I really want us to become friends. But please be there when I need you, okay?"

"Yes Greya!" Minako said, while Tomoko nodded fiercely.

"If I may," Nana waited until I nodded, "princess, they still need some dresses for when they accompany you in a more civilian setting."

"You mean when they follow me to the temple or into town?"

"Indeed, it would be bad to show everyone you have guards with you. It might give you an advantage if people thought they were only commoners, pardon the comparison."

"I see. But casual dresses will not be enough. I will talk to my mother to have them receive proper dresses. They are my new friends after all." I said, all smiling.

Then I addressed my new friends "ladies, this is Nanami, my servant and one of my best friends. Follow her instructions as if they were mine. Continue your training and do your best to protect me. I still want the both of you to practise together in close combat, with and without the use of daggers. I expect you will need those skills soon." They nodded fiercely, with a huge grin on their faces.

"Alright then, I expect you to take turns in guarding me. Sometimes I will need to have the both of you with me. I will try to inform you in a timely fashion, so you can rest properly. Any questions? No? Your guard duties will start tonight at sunset. Try to enjoy the festival. You are dismissed!"

The two guards bowed with a smile and then left us alone.

I spent the afternoon at the temple, where I was able to heal a few people, and discuss work with Kasumi.

The evening was spent walking with Mizuki in the palace gardens. A welcome walk that cleared my mind of negative thoughts and worries of things to come.  Finally a rather uneventful and relaxing day.
