Usually these ads would have a little [x] icon, however small and obscure, that would always be there. He was pretty sure it was a legal requirement, yet this ad had none. He looked all over the static image of the logo; he checked every corner, but there was nothing to indicate a way to close the screen.
Ben pressed the home button to exit the game; he decided he was done with it for the night. He glanced at the clock again and sighed, wondering what to do to pass the time. He was extremely tired, so it couldn't be anything too complex or boring. He browsed his phone as he came up with a solution.
He remembered downloading a bunch of movies and shows so he could have a common talking point to bridge gaps in relationships.
To be honest, he wasn't really a fan of most media; he mostly played phone games during slow periods of work because he had nothing better to do. In his own personal free time, he would research business trends. He tried to get into forex and crypto, but unfortunately, he got in at the wrong time. He deeply regretted not investing in the budding market of crypto in the early 2010s. But he knew it was his fault for not taking the opportunity. If only he had been as passionate about scam-*cough* business back then as he is now.
But anyway, due to this goal, most of the media he consumed was either pretentious filmwork or things that appealed to the lowest common denominator. He didn't want to watch any hipster indie films right now because they would almost certainly put him to sleep.
He yawned again as he browsed the collection of perfectly legal copies of films that had been downloaded to his phone through non-criminal means. He looked for something simple that required minimal thought as he searched through this catalog.
Eventually, he came across a movie that fit the bill, something he had planned to watch just to fit in—arguably the first movie to kick off the "Marvel" craze. You could say that the Hulk movie was the first, but it was made before the bastard rat bought Marvel. Anyways, Marvel was a really popular thing for a while before they oversaturated the market with superhero movies.
Ben hadn't seen many of their movies, his knowledge of them only pertaining to the bits and pieces he had seen as clips, or trailers that he had been subjected to. He thought he might as well try and catch up in case one of the "phase 5" or "phase 6", or whatever "phase" the company was in right now—actually had a "good" movie. He was bored anyway and had nothing better to do.
Ben searched through his pockets, pulling out a pair of tangled-up earbuds. He spent a good 30 seconds or so untangling the cord before plugging it into his phone. He quickly checked the buds, noticing a small r on one of them, so he could put the buds in the correct ears, though it rarely made a difference with these cheaper products.
After putting the earbuds in, he looked around sneakily, checking to make sure there weren't any more crones to tattle on him, before hopping on the counter to lay down. His back was killing him from sitting on the stool for so long. He was going to disinfect the top anyway, so he didn't think it was a big deal. Ben got somewhat comfortable and finally pressed play on the movie.
"Good choice," Ben mumbled, complimenting the use of the ACDC song "Back in Black." The song went well with the scene, which took place in a militaristic setting. He chuckled at some of Tony's one-liners before the one soldier kid asked for an autograph, which unfortunately coincided with a bombardment by terrorists.

Ben was startled to hear a loud booming sound. Because of the film's influence, his first thought was an explosion, but he used logic to figure out it was just thunder outside the building. He sighed as the rain started coming down harder, thinking about how he would have to bike home in such conditions. He preferred biking, not because the DMV had screwed him over because of his lack of paperwork, nor because he was cheap and didn't want to buy gas, but because of the exercise and freedom it gave him compared to a car... as well as the money saved by not having to buy gas.
However, in such conditions, a car would definitely be preferable.
He didn't realize he had distracted himself from the movie until he noticed it was at the scene where Tony was being held hostage with a sack over his head. Thunder bellowed again, followed by a flash of lightning out of the window. Ben looked on in shock as the power of the building went off.
He quickly paused the movie and tabbed out of the video player, trying to switch to a flashlight app. Unfortunately, he managed to open the game he was playing back up, and due to the darkness, his thumb pressed the download button without meaning to.
"Fuck," he said aloud.
He would have to do a virus scan later.
He tabbed out, this time actually opening the correct app. He flinched as he kept hearing thunder every few seconds while he made his way to the storage closet where the circuit breaker was. He used the phone with its screen pointed outward to light the way. He began hearing a howling sound as lightning struck again not far outside of the building, giving Ben a brief look at the raging wind outside.
"Why the hell did the weather get so shitty all of a sudden?!"
He was truly confused, as it was only drizzling earlier when the lady came in, but now it was like a full-on hurricane. Ben glanced at the breaker and flicked the tripped circuits back on. The room was once again bathed in light.
