A few days later, when Liz got tired from looking for “the door”, she went to the dining area to have lunch. Sheena came again with an old maid. She looked reluctant as if the old maid forcibly brought her there.

Liz withdrew her legs in the sense of self-defense when she was sipping her soup. Unfortunately, it did not seem to have any meaning.

The old maid, in a strong yet firm voice, “Liz, I heard that Sheena’s medal has gone. It was a precious gold medal that she had when she had an audience with the king.”

It came to Liz’s mind the time Lloyd went to their village to pick up Emilia as the candidate. She was sick and tired of it.

“It was in my bag, but now it’s gone. I desperately searched for it, but I couldn’t find it. So, when I looked back into my memory, I remember seeing someone leave my room. It was someone who had white hair. You’re the only one with white hair…I’m not doubting you, Liz! It’s just a medal from the king…” Sheena complained in a thin voice.

She had this bad feeling at the lunch table. There are so many people watching rather than confronting her about it alone. Perhaps she wanted it where everyone is paying attention.

“Speaking of white hair, so does the chief priest.” Manon, who was having lunch at the table beside, quietly said.

“Chief priest…Well, but not half.” exclaimed the candidate sitting across from her.

Sheena’s cheek stiffens as if she were humiliated.

“But I certainly saw Liz! It’s not a lie!”

“You saw someone with white hair, not Liz?” Manon asked in a matter-of-fact tone.

Not only Sheena’s cheek, but her whole face distorted.

The old maid stood in front of Sheena. “Sheena said that she saw her! Liz must have stolen it!”

Angry maids buzzed in the dining room.

Liz let out  a breath and looked at Sheena. Without blinking, she continued to stare at her with her red eyes.

     “…What is it?”

“I understand.” Liz told the anxious Sheena.

     ‘What?’

The young maid, who was also the one serving in the dining area, was surprised to see Liz. That young maid, who had been present a few days before, did not believe that Liz had deliberately set out her foot on Sheena to make her fall. No one has exactly seen what happened since they are always looking after the candidates in the temple. They know that the candidates’ character is not everything.

In particular, the maid knew that the character of the person is clearly shown through their attitude towards the person below them. The candidate’s position in the temple is, of course, higher, while maids are at the bottom.

Liz is different. She is not amiable, but she has never been arrogant. She also speaks politely to the maids as well as properly thanking them. Even if one does not show a smile, their inner feelings are coated in every part of their words.

There are absolutely differences between the nobles and the people who’re used to commoners. However, some commoners used the maids, as if they had been mistaken for candidates or of their original personality.

     ‘but…’

But Sheena is also a saint of Colorado. She knew what she’s done in Colorado, and how she usually smiles and behaves.

Especially the old maid who’s protecting Sheena, who came from the neighboring district next to Colorado. During the war, Sheena had helped her relatives. She heard them talking excitedly, “She really does look like a saint.”

The maid doesn’t think that Sheena’s lying though. In other words, she doesn’t know.

The maid was holding her breath while watching the scene, She exhaled as Liz spoke, “I understand.”

What did she understand? Liz looked determined that her red eyes were glowing. when she was wondering. It’s a color that is likely to suck you in. Deep red everywhere.

Suddenly, she noticed that Liz’s sleeves and dress were rustling by the wind. The maid looked around. The window is open yet there’s no wind nor breeze. No one’s hair or clothing was being softly blown. Liz’s white cheeks have become more transparent. The air around her was quite different from the usual Liz.

The candidates gasped. Manon’s eyes were wide open, staring at Liz.

“What is this? Wow … ” the maid murmured as if fascinated. They don’t have magic, but they work in the temple. They’ve seen the priests’ magic so many times already. Still, it was divine enough to be fascinated.

In the midst of everyone’s attention, Liz’s red lips slowly opened, “The medal is in Sheena’s room. It’s in the drawer of the mirror stand.“

Sheena was clearly upset by the revelation.

The maids were in disorder, buzzing.

“In Miss Sheena’s room? She always locks the room. So it seems possible.”

“Yes, I know. I have that key with me…Then you mean that Sheena had misplaced it herself?”

The gazes of the maids pierced to Sheena, who was about to deny with fright plastered on her face.

“Well, let’s go and check it now. I’ll follow you.” Liz said quietly.

“I’ll go with you.Why don’t we all go here?” Lloyd, who was standing by the doorway, laughed happily.

Inside the tumultuous dining area, Sheena bit her lips with frustration and regret.

     ‘She looks like this, too’

The young maid was surprised. Sheena had a sinister look which was so different from the usual gentle and tender Sheena. Her smile returned as if she noticed that she let out a strange face. Still, it’s far from her usual expression.

“…No, it’s fine. If you say so, I do feel like I’ve placed it in my drawer. It seems that I was mistaken. I apologize for troubling you.” Sheena bowed deeply. Her hands were clenched tightly into fists, her nails digging deeply into her skin as if blood would flow out.

“I’m glad it was resolved.Well then, I’ll be going.” Lloyd said with a smile while Liz gave out a big sigh, she went out of the dining area with him.

Liz went to the archives with Lloyd.

As they entered, Liz noticed the papers piled up high on the table where Lloyd would sit and do his work. It looked funny.

“I feel that the papers haven’t been decreasing since I last saw them.”

Lloyd must have worked overtime to do paperwork.

“Yes? It must be your imagination, is it?”

     “It’s not.”

     “—it’s more so.”

Lloyd sat down in his chair, shoving the bundle of papers on his desk carelessly away, his hand was on his chin, “The priest who had been to the monastery where Emilia was, returned the other day.” he said.

     Liz leaned forward.

“He said that Emilia certainly was there, just like in the letter. He also asked the others and people who worked under there, but they all answered the same thing. So, when he asked Emilia to see him, she reluctantly agreed to see him through the peephole of a room. She said she wants to train herself to make amends for all her wrongdoings. So I tried to look into it.” Lloyd stared at Liz.

“Emilia—I believe it was she, was so far away that her face couldn’t be clearly seen.  She wore a cloth veil over her head. However if I didn’t doubt it, I would’ve believed it to be her.

This is also thanks to the portrait I showed before I left. Well, she didn’t clearly show up—”

     “It’s not Emilia.”

After all, Emilia isn’t in that monastery. It’s Sheena. She’s Sheena in this temple—

“It seems to be true that Emilia and Sheena are the same person. At first, when you told me that, I was half-convinced.” Lloyd said.

     “… Lloyd believes my intuition?”

     “No, not at all.”

     “…”

“It looked more interesting. Well, the result is good, isn’t it?”

‘The lowest.’  Liz looked at him coldly.

Lloyd turned to Liz, his expression became serious, “The fact is, I asked the chief priest to take the letter. Nevertheless, the head declared that Emilia was there. He told a lie to the chief priest and then to the temple. I wonder whether he had unfathomable confidence or whether he has a large shield to back him up.”

     A huge shield, large backing—

“I think it’s the duke of Igner.”

“He’s someone who’s quite known. But he’s probably not the only one. And most of all, the one who changed Emilia’s face. There’s no magician who can use such forbidden magic…” His eyebrows raised as if he realized something.

“By the way, a few days ago the chief priest had sent all the priests for a meeting. If you find or notice anything in the temple, report to the chief priest immediately.”

     “What is it?”

“Well, the other priests questioned me, but I didn’t give them any details. I wonder if the chief priest himself doesn’t know, it felt like that.”

“Yes, Thank you.” Liz breathed out.

“What are you going to do now?” Lloyd said, his chin on his hand.

“Let’s poke into Emilia, There must be a snake in the bushes.”
