Chapter 14 – Scholarship Students Meeting

When I arrived at the classroom that was no longer in use, there were already people waiting for me. These were the 5 that did not pass out due to my magical power, as well as Headmaster Ludio.

“Oh, its Theo!”
“Everyone has already arrived I see. I’m sorry for asking for something annoying, Headmaster.”
“I don’t mind. Its quite acceptable for people who are capable to group up together.”

What I had asked the Headmaster for earlier, was to gather and talk to the students who did not collapse due to the output of my magical power. I wanted more information on everyone, and above all else, I needed to ask them an important question, so I was glad to see everyone grouped here.

I walked to the end of the classroom and sat down respectfully, and with that as a signal, Headmaster Ludio started to speak to the group.

“The main reason for gathering you today was for everyone to get closer with one another, as I was saying to Theodore, in order for the future you to do their best as while I would like to educate you all individually, I am unable to do that.”

“Sorry, I’m not exactly interested in that”

Although Shaula said this coldly while looking down at her fingernails, Headmaster Ludio brushed it off, while still smiling.

“Oh don’t say that. Everyone that is gathered here is a scholarship student. Here, let me hand you this.”

From his breastpocket, Headmaster Ludio took out 6 gold-plated emblems. Through the complicated patterns engraved, and the silver glint that comes off it, even an amateur would be able to tell that it was made of a precious metal.

“This is a metal called『 Magin 』  (Magic Silver). It contains a special magical power, and it requires a very skilled worksman in order to process it. I received it back from students which had already graduated a few years ago, but as you can see it is as good as new. This metal is also very expensive—”

Headmaster Ludio continued to give his explanation while handing the emblems out to everyone. His explanation continued to tell us about the privileges granted only to the scholarship students.

“Now this story is over. This is only the first day so let us start by introducing ourselves, shall we?” Then, from you with the red hair sitting in the front row, please”

“Hah!” (Sound when saluting)

The red-haired, fearless young man saluted as if he was a trained solider, and then turned to look at the people sitting behind him.

“My name is Keith Lermit. I am the eldest son of the Lermit family who has inherited the power of the Holy Flame for many generations. As a result of the examination, I was able to safely become a scholarship student. Due to being one that is well versed in both magic and swordsmanship, I believe I am a good opponent for you all to have practice battles with. Please treat me well.”

After applauding to a greeting that was as serious as it could get, the others followed along suit with sparce applause. Next, was the fox beastperson with the golden ears. The girl leaned over while sitting in her seat.

“Hello, my name is Roca Kolelight, and as you can see, I am a fox beastperson. As I have also entered as a scholarship student, I am confident in my physical abilities, although not for magic. I am ready to take anybody on at anytime… kuwa—-.”

After speaking in a very dignified tone, Roca was seen to yawn and shake out her tail in a much less dignified manner. I guess she’s tired.

Next was the white girl sitting in the seat to the left of Roca. However, this girl was twirling her white hair and staring out into space, seemingly not listening at all. In response to this, with a smirk Headmaster Ludio said

“Shaula Brunage, please give a proper greeting as you will be sticking with these guys for a while.”
“I just need Roca, and that’s all… maybe also another cute girl.”

A very relaxed person I see. It seemed everyone else also had the same observation as nobody seemed to retort. Headmaster Ludio shook his head, and then gestured for the next student to start. The girl stood up in an energetic manner while exclaiming

“Yes! Yes! Name’s Liz. As you can tell, I am indeed a beautiful elf, so everyone make sure to treat me well! Even more so as everyone is a scholarship student! There’s not many chances to get friendly with such a talented and beautiful elf girl! Hey, you!”

She glanced at me and winked. Yep, yep, cute.
Then Shaula opened her mouth.

“Is a question ok?”
“What is it?”
“Are you a virgin?”

It felt as if the place froze over. Perhaps this was the first time she had been asked. However, with the tenacity of a god, Liz laughed and responded in a playful manner

“Hmmm.. What do you think? I don’t know of a male that would leave such a beautiful girl as I alone, you know…?”
“Well that’s fine, I’ll just check tonight. If you’re pure, then I’ll make love to you a lo–.”

Shaula was suddenly cut off as a long tail hit her head and sent her through the classroom wall. It seemed that the tail of Roca, who was sitting beside her, had got a direct hit in.

“Liz, you don’t have to take what that idiot says seriously.”
“Wow… merciless.. is that ok? Is she alive?”
“She’s as much an idiot as she is sturdy. She wont keel over from this much.”
“Ufufu… I feel the love from Roca… fufufufu” (TL Note: Masochist much?)

Shaula, who could be seen buried in the wall, was soaked in blood while grinning. She is a disappointing person, however seems fine as long as she is silent. Headmaster Ludio then gestures for the next student. It seems he has ignored the recent development.

The named Dragonkin boy was sat in the last row of the class, with his feet resting on the desk infront, while reading a grimoire.

“Julian. Dragonkin. That’s all.”

The self-introduction given really tells us about himself in as small a time as possible. It really shows his character. Suddenly, Keith, the only person in the very front row stands.

“You guys! Are you even trying to be serious here? This is a sacred study hall you know! Don’t you think as scholarship students you should be a bit more serious here?!”
“Whatever…”
“I’m not interested it that… I mean, its terrible to even be in a classroom with a male, let alone one such as you. Just you try touch Roca with your disgusting fingers while in my sight. I dare you.”

Julian and Shaula responded in quick succession, only adding to Keith’s frustration.

“I didn’t even know that I would be made a scholarship student… I only transferred here. Well, its not like I can’t be friends with you though. You should feel honoured.”

Roca was being Roca and continued to display her arrogance.

“Well, lets just all calm down. As Ryuu- I mean as Mr. Ryuu was saying, we should all get along.”

After Liz said this Keith scratched his red hair and sat down in silence. I can’t really seem to see any motivation from anyone else either.

“Well then. The last student, please introduce yourself.”

While I was stunned by the sudden shift in topic by Mr Ludio, I stood up. At that moment all of the students who seemed to have no sense of unity gave a quick glance at me.

“Umm… My name is Theodore. I also want to get along with everyone as much as possible. Nice to meet you all.”
“Yes! Yes! Nice to meet you!”

Liz was seen clapping and applauding.

“Umu umu, I also want to get along with you, nice to meet you.”
“Theodore, I don’t mind if it’s when it’s convenient for you. Fight me again. I won’t lose this time.”
“Hmm? Well if we are fighting Theodore then I also want to request a rematch! Let me return the humiliation that I felt then back at you!”

Two enthusiastic people seemed to have booked me in for a match, leaving me with no choice but to vaguely say something along the lines of “next time, sure”.

Shaula stuck out her tongue and turned away from me as soon as her line of sight met mine.
Julian also glared, but quickly went back to his grimoire.

Leaving that matter aside, Keith, Roca, Shaula, Liz and Julian really do seem to be the scholarship students. I truly do want to get along with them, as they are kids who may come to subdue me in the not-so-distant future.

“Now, as the self-introduction is over, do you all have any questions?”

Silence. As it seemed that nobody had anything to add, I asked the thing that I had been curious about since the start.

“Then I have a question. When I graduate from this school, I will be a soldier, but how can I become a hero from there?”

The eyes of everyone in the classroom turned to me again. Well that’s to be expected after all, it is the most coveted spot that everyone cares about.

“When you say hero…”
“Its just that. In the Empire, you would enshrine a particularly excellent person as a hero and subdue the Demon King of the neighbouring country of the Tenebrae Demon Kingdom!”

Once again, it was silent.
Hmm? Did I say something wrong here? No, but it is something that I truly am curious about.
Hurry and come to me Hero. I’m ready to go all out on you. How about a welcoming party? We could even have a banquet before fighting.
Even if you don’t have that much talent I’m sure that I can help you become a hero myself. I mean, that is what I’m half expecting to have to do anyways.

“A hero… how long ago are you talking here?”

Julian, who had hardly spoken said in a dismal tone.

“How many years you say…”
“Its been over 500 years since a hero was dispatched from the Empire. I mean, wasn’t the story that he never made it back?”

“Yes, maybe he didn’t come home, but are you going to leave the demon king? Isn’t it dangerous? Is everyone ok with that?”

I said this to cheer him up a little, but the reaction was not great.
It was Roca who opened her mouth first.

“A demon, huh. I know of the country to the west of the Empire, but nothing will happen even if we were to leave it alone.”
“I mean, the Demon King? What even is that. Is there even something like that for the demons? I mean its already been 500 years hasn’t it? Wouldn’t they be dead already?”

Shaula, I’m right in front of you. I’m not dead. Although that did just deal major damage to me.
I then went to Keith, who seemed to be the most serious of all.

“How about it Keith? Don’t you yearn for subjugation?”

“Oh, uh… Well it’s true that the Emperor and the Tenebrae Democratic State fought each other, but that was 500 years ago. Since then, there have only been some small skirmishes at the border, but there hasn’t been any major war, right?”
“That’s for sure”

Huh. That would explain why it was so boring.

“In such a situation encouraging a hero to challenge the demons would be a wasteful act. Rather, the problems of other countries are what worry me. It’s even more important how the northern Zenan Dragon Kingdom, which we have been fighting for a few years ago, will move in the future.”

Um.. The Demon King is not just a threat to the Human race you know…
I turned to Liz.

“Well I agree with Keith-kun too I guess? It was only 100 years ago that Tsehute Aria, where our elves lived, formed an alliance with the empire. While there were some diplomatic relations before then, there were a lot of conflicts, and there are still quite a lot of people in the empire who dislike the Elves unfairly, even though we are at peace. So I’m more concerned about that compared to the demons.”

I finally turned to Mr Ludio, who answered with an indescribable look.

“Well, should be said has already been said by everyone.”
“I mean, hasn’t the hero been taken out many times though? Is there no need for revenge or anything like that?”

“Like I’m saying, that way of thinking is old. What does it matter if some hero was defeated 500 years ago? I mean, if it was something like your family dying I would understand, but..”

“n- no”

This is not good. Everyone’s stopped making sounds.
And then Roca comes in with the final blow.

“On the contrary, Theo, do you want to subdue the Demon Lord?”

No, I don’t want to subdue it, I just want you to come try and subjugate it…

Julian laughed softly.

“Surely, it wasn’t since Hero was 500 years ago that he won the first place in the three tests?
“Really? I didn’t know there was such a record. Does Theo want to be a hero? If so, I will support you. You are strong. If its you, I think you could.” Says Keith.

“Surely, even if you are enshrined as a hero right now, the opponent to fight is probably the Zenan Dragon Kingdom. Some people, who are actually called great heroes who have made great achievements in the fight with his country, are also here.”

“……Enough……”

I sunk back into my seat, akin to a withering flower that had withered and died.
