She looked at the item for bid on stage and while it looked like an extremely expensive necklace that was made of gold and diamonds, it was still only a piece of jewelry for her.
"You sure are spending a lot for this thing," she commented and Gael's grin widened, making him look even more dashing.
"I sure am. It's for you," he turned to her and winked.
Knitting her brows, Samantha almost slapped the smirk on his face but she balled her fist and stopped herself. "Why would you do that? I don't want that thing! I hate flashy pieces."
Despite the high initial bid, someone else outbid Gael. "Forty-eight million," said an old man who was a few rows behind them — she sighed in relief.
"Fifty." Gael bid again, making Samantha's eyes bigger. She thought that he would stop if she told him she didn't like it.
"You're crazy!!! Stop bidding!" She said in gritted teeth, trying to make her voice low so that only the two of them could hear.
"This is a charity, Ms. Kim and this is my money. I will spend it however I want." He concluded before he turned away from her.
Samantha scowled in her head as she clenched her teeth. Why was this man being so difficult? However, no matter how she cursed at him in her head, he was still right; it was his money. Even so, she did not like that he was spending so much especially when what he said replayed in her head, '...It's for you.'
"Fifty-two," a familiar voice of a man was heard from the other side of the room. The voice of the man whom Samantha was very much aware of disturbed the debate that was going on in her head.
As soon as she heard it, her head automatically looked to his direction wherein she saw Daniel Cho who had just raised his paddle after making a bid.
Looks like another man was just as crazy to get this expensive necklace.
But as much as Samantha wanted to stop Daniel from spending his fortune, though she knew that it was not going to make him poor at all what with everything he had, something else caught her eye — rather, someone who was sitting so close to him.
There was another woman next to him who had a long hair, slim figure and had really red lips, not to mention, her eyes were looking at Daniel in a very sticky manner. Samantha wanted to gouge the woman's eyes out but she had to force herself to remain seated. The woman looked a little familiar but Samantha was sure that it was the first time that she had seen the woman.
Out of the corner of Daniel's eyes, he saw a movement and when he looked at Samantha's way, he saw the disappointment on her expression. Their eyes only met briefly before she looked away and he already knew what was on her mind yet there was nothing he could do at the moment but focus on the bidding.
"Sixty million," Gael said calmly as if money was nothing to him; the current bid was already the same as the necklace's value.
"Sixty-five." Daniel Cho immediately got the upper hand, earning approval from the crowd.
"Please stop," Samantha gently held Gael's arm to refrain him from bidding again. He raised a brow and questioned her, "And why would I listen to you? Just because I'm playing with your ex-husband, you want me to wave the white flag to let him win?"
"Are you only doing this for fun? Because if you are, this is such a waste of money." Samantha countered. She hated what was happening because it's becoming a bidding war between the two men and yet Gael seemed to be enjoying it a lot.
"Even if I was wasting money... it's my money, not yours and so you have no right to stop me, Ms. Kim. Not unless you become my wife, otherwise…" Gael raised his paddle before the auctioneer called the final bid, "Seventy."
Gael just went over the value by a lot of zeros, making the crowd gasp and gossip with each other.
Daniel wondered why Gael was adamant in getting what he wanted for the night but whatever reason it was, it did not stop him from bidding some more. "Eighty-five."
Samantha's heart raced as the two men's ego build up so high in the sky that if she attempted to look up, she was afraid that her neck would snap. She looked at Daniel and saw the woman whisper something to him with a smile and in return, he clenched his teeth but nodded and crossed his arms.
She could not figure out who the woman was but by the looks of it, Daniel seemed to listen to her. Just who the hell was this woman?
"One hundred million dollars." Gael firmly said and a whistle was heard from the crowd. He looked at Samantha and saw her glaring towards Daniel's direction; she had not even heard the latest bid. He chuckled at the sight before he leaned in and whispered something to her that made her blush.
Just in time, Daniel saw what happened and he became uneasy. He disliked how Gael was so close to her while all he could do was sit from afar and just watched the two of them.
"One hundred million dollars going once, going twice… sold to Mr. De Luca," said the auctioneer.
Everyone stood up and clapped their hands as they acknowledged how wealthy he was. Gael was invited to the stage to receive the necklace and he was asked by the host, "Mr. De Luca, you seemed to be very eager to get this piece of jewelry tonight. Would you mind sharing the reason behind it?"
Gael flashed a smile and looked at Samantha's direction, "As much as I'd like to reveal, let's just say that… it's for someone special."
The crowd was awed by how controversial his answer was.
Another man was feeling sour the moment that he heard his response.
"Seems like this special someone is very blessed to receive this precious necklace from you. Thank you very much for your generosity, Mr. De Luca." The host responded and Gael went back to his seat.
Samantha did not like the way he looked at her knowing that Daniel was just there in the same room as them. She would have already punched him in the face if there weren't people around them at the moment but she could not draw any attention to them so she could only glare at him.
"Don't look at me like that or else I will start to think that you're in love with me," Gael spoke nonchalantly as he sat back down, making Samantha's jaw drop to the floor with how gutsy he was.
"As if! Why would I-"
"This is for you," he interrupted her as he handed the box.
Samantha looked at his hand and was even more confused about why he was giving her something so expensive. "I already told you, I don't want it."
"Maybe so, but you need it." He opened the box, revealing the striking piece of jewelry inside it.
Samantha marveled at how beautifully it was made. The design was intricate and she could imagine that it would look magnificent when worn. It was definitely precious but it was not something that she would want for herself. "Why would I need this?"
Gael stared into her eyes and wished that he could put the marvelous necklace on her. He believed that it was a piece that would suit her beauty but he knew that if she would learn who owned the necklace, she would probably despise it.
He patiently waited until Samantha stared back at him before he told her, "This is Lavro Yanovich's necklace.. You need this, Samantha."
