While on the way into the office, Seulgi was thinking fond thoughts. She was thinking it was about time to take a vacation. Jeju Island is a popular place. So was Hawaii. Maybe she would try something different and go to Australia. The beaches there are supposed to be world class. She had been working on her English, so there should not be too much of an issue with communication.
She thought about asking Nayeon to join her, but that might put a big crimp in the daily business operations while she was gone. Maybe she should ask Wannie next time they meet up. That should be tomorrow. Maybe not, she doesn’t know Wannie that well yet. She still might secretly be an axe murderer for all Seulgi knew. Chuckling to herself, put her lunch in the breakroom fridge and took her bun to her office.
She emptied the relevant things out of her briefcase onto her desk and set it aside. Booting up her laptop she continued the absurd mental movie of Wannie in Australia chasing sharks with an axe. It was Seulgi, so it did not always have to make sense.
She opened her email and scanned for important things first. The first thing was that the yet unnamed project was now named: Kim. The Kim Project was an official project now. It also elevated all emails about this to a higher level. There was even an assigned due date that the project had to be finished by. Seulgi and company were not directly assigned to the project, but they were on the periphery so had to remain informed.
It was better to be informed about what was going on anyway as they would inevitably be dragged into some part, or even parts, of the project. For warned is for armed. And as her group of miscreants was all proactive, it was better to anticipate what might be coming their way.
Seulgi did a quick run through of the weekend’s emails. She flagged the important stuff and read them as needed. Everything else could wait. There were a few changes in the projects that were already being worked on. One major and several minor changes were needed. Why an entire project’s report font had to be changed she didn’t understand, but neither did she really care. This was not the first time she read an email about a silly to an outright stupid thing that needed to be changed in a project. A project’s report needed to be in an entirely different font? Someone had way too much time on their hands. She made notes of these changes to be assigned to the appropriate people for later.
They had other projects they were working on as well. So, it was going to get busy again. She spent time prioritizing what needed to be done this day. She assigned things to be done. She did not assign any priorities because she trusted her group to choose to do things intelligently.
In the beginning, she had assigned priorities to the tasks that she issued but quickly found that it was not only unnecessary but counterproductive. She may disagree with their choices occasionally, but sometimes they knew things that she didn’t. She had yet to have an unsatisfactory answer as to why they chose to work on Project X’s problems over Project Y’s.
Once she was caught up on the important things, she started reading the rest of the emails. Someone had something to sell and offered to sell it to someone at work before putting it on the open market. There were several birthdays coming up. She needed to get a card for one of them. Also a few work anniversaries. Some things were interesting, but most were not. About 2/3rds of the emails ended up in the recycle bin of her mail client. The rest were actually relevant.
After checking the printer's power, ink, and paper, she then tried to print the assignments for everyone. Nothing printed. So, she rechecked everything. Everything physical was correct, so it had to be a software thing. This had happened before, so she checked the printer properties, she saw five jobs in the print queue, but nothing was coming out.
She opened the services tab on Task Manager and went to the print spooler; it was stopped. She restarted the service and a moment later, the printer started spitting out the print queue. She remembered what the tech had said and done on a prior service all for the printer not printing.
She nodded in satisfaction at her technical acumen as people started to trickle in her door. They all chatted about their weekend adventures. Or misadventures as the case may warrant. After all, the Terrible Twins were always up to something. However, this time it was Yeji that had everyone in stitches from laughing too hard. Granted, it was semi-lurid and not at all appropriate to retell in this story.
Everyone was present and ready to start the meeting to begin their work day. Knocking on her desk to get everyone’s attention, she began the meeting.
Seulgi’s meetings were ran unconventionally. She actually let others talk and listened to them. She accepted the good and bad news with equal aplomb. The good news was celebrated. The bad news was worried over by everyone to try and find a fix. What was unusual was everyone was actively encouraged to problem solve. Even the new people. You never knew, someone might have run across a solution that they had not thought of. Some of the suggestions were straight forward and helpful. Some of them were deliberately ludicrous, usually from Yeji or Nayeon.
Yeji was usually pretty quiet and reticent, but when motivated, she also had an impressively subtle and wicked sense of humor. Everyone eventually found this out just after they found themselves the butt of her humor. The truly amusing thing was that she and Nayeon had a cordial war going on with who could pull the best joke or prank. Amazingly, Yeji was winning. Nayeon was too upfront and brash. Yeji was more subtle and wicked. No one was safe.
Not even Seulgi. She seemed to be their favorite target. Fortunately for the knuckleheads, Seulgi was super tolerant and just let most things slide. Except for when she didn’t and she gave back as hard as she received. If not harder, depending on what they chose to tease her about. It was rare, but Seulgi could, when properly motivated, trounce everyone in the room when the jokes started flying.
Yeojin’s eyes nearly popped out from shock the first time she observed this. Much to everyone else’s amusement. Everyone liked to play Shock The Newbie whenever they had the opportunity.
