Chapter 3: Chapter 3: A New Home or Prison?

David stared out of the helicopter window as it raced across the sky. He looked down at the destruction with wide eyes. Every city or town that they passed was completely obliterated. He saw hordes of the infected on the ground as they appeared as little ants and some as big cockroaches. 

 

That monster that he had seen with the many eyes still made his skin crawl. It was like something out of a nightmare. What the fuck was that?! He thought over and over again. That was no animal. Just what was this virus capable of doing if it could create a 10-foot-tall monster?! 

 

As the day turned to night, David saw that some of the other scientists were having a hard time falling asleep. Many of them would doze off for a moment then snap awake with a loud cry. He had no intention of sleeping and did not think he could truly sleep again after witnessing the infected.

 

His mind kept wondering if Jenna was alive and safe. Even though the big tall bastard had said that their loved ones were probably dead, David still hoped. He refused to imagine that his wife had transformed into one of those deformed creatures that he had seen.

 

“We are approaching the facility,” one of the pilots said. A soldier nodded and looked at the scientists with a blank expression.

 

“Where are we? What facility is this?” Bradley, a young diagnostician, asked the soldier. The soldier did not respond but instead stared at him blankly.

 

David looked out the window and all he could see were trees. It took him a moment to see several black buildings in the middle of the forest. It was surrounded by a walled structure with what he imagined as electric wire on top. There was a helicopter landing pad on several of the buildings. Many helicopters were parked on them.

 

The helicopter began to descend and finally docked on the building. One of the soldiers swung the door open and pointed his gun at the scientists. “Get out! Let’s go!” 

 

David and the others hopped out of the helicopter and were led to a door. They headed down the stairs until they came to another door. The soldiers led them to an elevator bank and one of the elevators opened. “Get in!” He shouted at them. 

 

They all hurried in and looked at the soldiers who had their guns trained on them. The tension was high in the elevator and David felt like if he moved an inch that he would be gunned down as well as the others. 

 

The doors opened and they were marched out and down a hallway to a large conference room. Waiting for them were their fellow peers as well as the tall man and other soldiers. He looked at them with a smile that was not warm and welcoming. 

 

“Glad you can join us,” He said. “Gather round and listen up.”

 

Everyone huddled together and looked at the tall man and soldiers in fear. It was quiet in the room except for the heavy breathing of many of them. 

 

“You are all employees of Quonium and many of you have been working for our wonderful organization for many years. Many of you have forsaken friends and family in order to be a part of the many great things that Quonium has done for this world. This is more than a job. It is your duty,” The man said. 

 

“My name is Major Gabriel Nox and you all will now report to me. As you know the world has gone to shit and we are trying to understand what the fuck happened and how to best stop the shitshow from continuing. That is where you all come in!”

Nox walked out in front of everyone which made many of them recoil from his looming presence. He still had a small smile on his lips that was so menacing. “You all will be working around the clock to figure out what this virus is and how to contain it.”

 

“What?” Bradley asked. “I don’t understand. I just want to go home.”

 

“This is your new home and please do not interrupt me again,” Nox said in a calm voice. Bradley shut his mouth and stared at the tall man fearfully.

 

“You all will be living here as you work. There will be no time for any fun or leisure activities. You will all be spending every second of your time in your little labs working away like the good worker bees you are,” Nox said. “Any substantial questions?”

 

There was a moment's silence. Everyone looked at each other with anxious expressions on their faces.

 

“What if we refuse to work?” Mary spoke up. She was a pathologist that had trained David many eons ago when he first started at Quonium.

 

“You will be punished,” Nox said with a grin. “Trust me, you don’t want that to happen.”

 

There was a large silence in the room as everyone took that in. David knew that Nox was not joking. They would be hurt or worse if they refused to work. 

 

“How did you know we were at the facility back in Westford?” Mary asked.

 

“We have cameras in all of our facilities as you well know. We saw you lot in the lab. It took us some time to get mobile in order to gather you folks and others from around the country,” Nox said. “You are very lucky that Ms. Raylen made it a high priority to gather all of the scientists or at least the ones that were still alive in the facilities to this new base of operations.”

 

“There are others here already?” Mary asked Nox.

 

“Yes. They are already hard at work,” Nox said with a grin. “You all will be just as hard at work like them soon but first I am going to show you something. Follow me.”

 

Nox stepped out of the room and the soldiers raised their guns at the scientists and motioned for them to follow. They all hurried out behind him. The tall man had a big stride as he walked. They walked down a long hallway and passed many doors on both sides. 

 

Nox came to a door and swiped a keycard at the pad next to it. The door opened and the lights turned on. David and the others let out a cry of horror as they looked at several of the infected that were in various cryo chambers.
