"Now what?" Selvo suddenly realized that even his newly reached Materialization State was not helping him deal with the powerlessness he was currently feeling.
When he first learned that their backer was one of the great families, Selvo was already imagining all the ways he'd enjoy himself freely in the future.
But knowing his personality, his father had already warned him to stay within his limits, at least till the whole matter of swallowing the Safaira family was resolved.
Although he felt vexed, Selvo knew better than to anger his father. So he decided to stop, or at least tone down, his activities.
But one day, as he was roaming across the city, he came across a party of mercenaries. It was like any other party you'd found in Nulis City. Though what attracted his attention to that party was a beautiful girl—one like he had never seen before.
She was so charming that Selvo had a hard time believing that he had missed the presence of someone like her in his own city. But he soon concluded that she must be an outsider.
That didn't matter, though. What he wanted was to get a hold of her.
So that's what he did: he contacted the Giro Gang and made arrangements for the girl's capture.
Even the thought of his father's angry face, had he found out about it, didn't put off his enthusiasm. All the repercussions were left to be dealt with later. Besides, what's the worst that could have happened?
The girl's family will come demanding justice? Well, who's going to tell them about it? No one! It was his city. He could do whatever he wanted. So what if they came? He was feeling more unbridled than ever now that his family had established connections with a giant from the capital.
But as he was happily anticipating Nedar's call for fetching the girl, his father came barging in his room.
Fearing disturbing the guests from the capital, his father's voice was not loud. But only Selvo could feel how much anger was suppressed underneath his calm voice.
What was worse, for the first time in his life, his father talked about ousting him!
If it was any other time, he would have simply scoffed at the warning. How could his father just give up the only son he had raised with such efforts? So many resources and time were put in to make someone as uninterested as him reach the Materialization State.
It was all for the future of the Handler family. How could he simply abandon his precious son just for the sake of punishing him?
But not this time!
When he heard his father's words, Selvo was genuinely terrified!
He knew that, given the potential benefits they'd receive from the Sorneo House, his father was more than capable of birthing and raising another son.
Actually, he didn't even need to birth another one, as Selvo was rather sure that his father probably already had some other children hidden somewhere. A bit of resources from what they'd gain would be enough to raise some like him, or maybe someone even better.
That's why Selvo did his best to ask for forgiveness. After finally placating his father's anger to some extent, Selvo decided to take care of the matter the instant his father left.
But as he was arranging for a team to leave with him, a person from the Giro Gang arrived.
Selvo received the messenger, who told him about the gang leader Nedar's invitation. Furthermore, he was also asked to come alone.
Although doubtful about the request, Selvo still agreed.
Thankfully, his father had already called his bodyguard and the guards. According to him, they also deserved some blame.
Taking the chance, Selvo quietly left the premises after intimidating the guards he met to keep quiet.
As he followed the messenger to the gang's place, a faint uneasiness couldn't help but appear in his heart. He was feeling restless, as if his troubles were not over yet.
When he finally heard the truth about the origin of the girl he had casually ordered to be abducted...
Selvo knew he had screwed up really bad.
And now, as he looked at Nedar's back, the only person who knew the real extent of the trouble coming his way, Selvo couldn’t control the uneasiness he was feeling.
Sweating profusely, Selvo reiterated his question, "What else is there, Nedar?"
After keeping silent for a while, Anom finally turned around. Looking at Selvo with his eyes narrowed, he said in a serious manner, "Her friends are already looking for her everywhere inside the city."
"So?" Isn't that the normal response to a kidnapping? Selvo thought.

"The thing is, when they realized that the chances of them finding her were looking thin, they subtly hinted about their origins," he said. "Although it'll be hard for the people here to believe that someone from a great family would get kidnapped in such a small city, the temptation of a hefty reward just for providing information is enough to move many small groups."
Before Selvo could hurry him again, Anom summarized, "The point is, it won't be long before your father finds out about this and connects this to the kidnapping we conducted." He then looked at Selvo's pale face and asked, "What do you think about that?"
Selvo's breathing turned hurried as he barely let out a reply, "Then we have to hurry and get rid of her."
"Get rid of her?" Anom asked, appearing astounded, "You want to kill her?"
"What?! No!" Selvo almost screamed, "I'm not foolish enough to kill someone like her." He then said slowly, "I mean, let's just set her free, like, just dump her somewhere where others can find her."
Anom stared at him for a second before nodding.
Just as Selvo was about to breathe out in relief, Anom spoke again: "Looks like you still underestimate the people from the capital, young master Selvo." Anom shook his head. "They won't just let anyone leave after messing with them. Even if we let her go, they undoubtedly won't stop their search. Just that the target will switch on the kidnappers—us."
"Why are you so sure about that?" Selvo asked uncertainly.
"I'm not." Anom shrugged. "But what do you think your family would have done if somebody did the same with you?" he asked. "Would they have let them go?"
Selvo was speechless. Of course they won't let go of the perpetrator even if the person came begging on their knees.
"Oh, yes." Anom raised his head, acting as if he'd just remembered something. "When I was questioning the girl in her delusional state, she also mentioned something about her family."
Amidst Selvo's nervous stare, Anom rubbed his forehead as if trying hard to recall.
"I got it," Anom said. "Lance. That's the name." He then looked at Selvo, only to find him staring at him blankly.
"Hey, dude- young master?" Anom realized that he was not staring at him but was instead just staring blankly at nothing. Only after Anom shook his shoulder did Selvo come to himself.
"What happened, young master?" Anom asked in a concerned tone. "Don't tell me you know about them."
"We're finished." Selvo muttered. "We're finished for real this time!" Lowering his head, he grabbed it with his hands before muttering, "There's no way we can deal with it if those military people are involved. Fuck, we can't even use your gang as a scapegoat. Those people will end up finding me one way or another. We can't even escape from them."
Does this guy have a personal feud with this gang or something? Why does he keep talking about making them the scapegoat? Anom was speechless. He was sure this guy's words would have made the real leader cough up blood out of anger. Fortunately, Gamus had already relieved him of that fate.
Anyway, Anom still had to continue with his act.
"Young master?" Anom called out to Selvo, only to get no response.
The guy was pulling his hair while rambling idiotically.
Did he completely lose it? Anom scratched his head as he realized that this guy probably knew more about the Lance family for him to be this scared. He was also curious, as that girl, Kristin, didn't go into much detail. But then Anom looked at the guy, who seemed to be on the verge of breaking down out of panic. Helplessly, he could only clear his throat and...
"YOUNG MASTER!!"
"Whaa?!" The shout made Selvo jump, as he ended up with his bottom on the floor. He stared at Anom in a daze before finally asking, "What happened? Why are you shouting?"
"Uh, could you please stand up first?"
As Selvo stood up, Anom didn't give him time to think about anything else as he directly asked, “From your words, you seem to know about this Lance family.”
Hearing the name again, Selvo's eyes were filled with fear and hopelessness, but he forcefully nodded. "I know about them."
Seeing Anom's gesture, he could only continue, "They are part of the faction that is closely tied with the royal family. After all, most of the famous commanders and generals who have achieved great achievements came from that family." He then gritted his teeth before sighing helplessly.
"That's not all," he continued. "The current commander-in-chief is also from that family; he's even the brother of the family head. They're too powerful for us to escape their hands."
Selvo once again sighed as he himself came to realize what a stupid mistake he had made in a seemingly casual manner.
"That's good," said Anom.
"Huh?"
