Owe You A Life  (1)

Today felt longer than usual.

The bell indicating the end of nighttime self-study just rang and Qin Yuan had already left the classroom in quick steps, heading to the dormitory with big strides.

When he pushed the door open, the light was on and Ruan Qingmu was already sitting at his desk. Seeing him enter, he also didn’t look unhappy but slightly smiled as a greeting and lowered his head to look at his books again.

Qin Yuan stealthily glanced at the books on his table. This time it was a different textbook, not an English one but a Chinese textbook.

Did he truly… want to get good grades in both English and Chinese exams and wasn’t just randomly making conversation?

He silently entered the bathroom and walked out after he finished washing up.

The nighttime self-study ended at half-past nine and the dormitory’s electricity would be turned off at half-past ten. After all, the sophomore year wasn’t very stressful. The students who returned to their dorm at this time would rarely study but tended to chat and play around until bedtime. Some secretly set up mahjong tiles behind closed doors, some gathered together to watch movies, and most would go online and play games.

The ones who really wanted to continue studying usually were the senior year students, who would stay inside the school building and wouldn’t come back at this hour.

Qin Yuan sat beside Ruan Qingmu and turned on his desk lamp.

The dormitory’s fluorescent light was placed in the center of the room while the desks were at the side. If they read only by relying on the ceiling light, there would be shadows falling on the books, making reading difficult.

It was much better after turning on an additional light. The desk lamp had a simple design and there was even a tiny screen on the bottom showing the time. It emitted a soft and warm light when it shone from the front.

Qin Yuan absent-mindedly looked at his book, but he couldn’t help but glance sideways out of the corner of his eyes.

Ruan Qingmu didn’t look at him at all. He simply stared at his book completely focused while flipping through the pages of the book once in a while.

His movements were quick and at a balanced pace.

Qin Yuan made a silent estimation in his heart and suddenly noticed something.

The time interval between Ruan Qingmu turning the book and his usual speed of reading a book actually seemed to be similar.

After a long time, Ruan Qingmu slightly stretched his body. He stood up, went to the side to pour a cup of water, and sat down again.

The moment he sat down, he seemed to be stunned for a while. He slightly tilted the corner of his eyes and glanced at the desk lamp.

After some more time, he suddenly stood up and entered the bathroom.

When he returned and sat down again, he finally let out a sigh. He turned to look at Qin Yuan and there was a gleam in his black eyes.

“You can directly place the desk lamp in the middle. It doesn’t seem to trouble you to move it one inch at a time, but I still feel tired for you.”

The expression on Qin Yuan’s face stiffened, and he turned his head. “I…”

The electricity was abruptly cut off without any warning.

The fluorescent light on the ceiling and the small desk lamp in front of their desk went out simultaneously. Qin Yuan’s pupil glistened in the sudden dark like the surface of a calm night lake in a valley.

Suddenly, his deep voice rang out. “I’m sorry.”

Ruan Qingmu: “…”

He seemed to be hallucinating, wasn’t he?

The boundless darkness seemed to give people courage. The opposite youth’s voice was deep and low as he said, “In the future… it’s better if you bring your crutches. You won’t have to suffer as much if you somehow get punished.”

Ruan Qingmu looked at him and his voice was softer than usual. “My leg is fine, really. I’m just pretending to be crippled.”

Qin Yuan stubbornly shook his head. “You didn’t even go for a re-examination.”

Ruan Qingmu laughed. He didn’t dwell on the topic and only nodded his head. “Okay, I won’t let myself be punished again later.”

“My attitude was bad during the day. Don’t take it to heart.” Qin Yuan said with difficulty, “I thought that…”

“Understood.” Ruan Qingmu interrupted him. “You don’t need to explain.”

He knew that the person before him actually wanted the best for him. It never changed in the previous life or this life.

But from the moment it started, their standpoint was already too far apart.

Without a good start, they couldn’t help but fight each other every time they encountered one another. They had even gambled and fought each other to death many times in the past.

After separating, sometimes he would feel indignant and rage when he recalled this person, but sometimes he would also feel lost and regretful.

Both of them silently climbed to their beds and lay down.

After a long time, Ruan Qingmu’s phone faintly lit up, then quickly went out again.

After a moment, it lit up again,

Qin Yuan suddenly said, “It’s already so late. Until what time are you planning to play on your phone?”

Ruan Qingmu got out from the thin quilt covering his head. “Oh, it’s still bright? I will set the screen darker.”

Qin Yuan suddenly lifted the mosquito net, grabbed his hand, and flipped the phone screen over.

“… Are you crazy?” After a long time, he said in a muffled voice. “Are you going to study hard without food and sleep?”

His phone screen showed the interface of an English word app.

Ruan Qingmu snorted. “Qin-shaoxia, you don’t seem to understand me – I’m the type of person who never goes back on his word.”

Qin Yuan looked at him firmly without knowing what to say.

Ruan Qingmu casually waved his hand. “Enough. I will switch my sleeping position in order not to disturb you.”

As he just wanted to change the direction of his pillow, Qin Yuan pulled at him.

“Let’s make an agreement first. Until what time do you plan to stay up studying?”

Ruan Qingmu yawned. “How will I know? I will naturally go to sleep if I’m sleepy and can’t hold on anymore.”

Qin Yuan jumped down from the bed, took something from the desk, and climbed up the bed again.

He pressed the button with a click and the small desk lamp unexpectedly lit up again, lighting up a small part of the bed.

“Eleven o’clock. I will turn off the light when the time comes.” He casually groped for an exercise book and leaned against the wall with the opened book in his hands.

Ruan Qingmu was stunned and picked up his phone. “No need, you can go to sleep. I’ll turn it off immediately.”

The warm orange light shone on the side of Qin Yuan’s smooth and clear face. His eyelashes lowered as he looked at the book on his knee. “I also need to read a little longer.”
