After hyper dissecting my emotions and actions, probably in an unhealthy manner, I went out of my room to Chloe sitting on the living room floor the following day. I walked over, taking a seat next to her as we looked out the window to the sun rising. She sat quietly with her knee to her chest and a candy bar in hand, chewing slowly in her purple nightgown.
“Are you better now?” she asked, glancing over at me.
I nodded, keeping my eyes forward. “Yeah, I just needed some alone time. But, sorry, it was immature,” I said, setting my forearm on my knee. “I need to grow up.”
Chloe nodded with a smile. “I understand that feeling. No need to apologise.”
“Thanks for being understanding.”
Chloe meekly scooted closer, leaning her head on my arm. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about the elf thing. You were so accepting of my other bloodline that I feared it would be too much. It’s not too much, right?”
I turned towards her slightly, and she lifted her head, gazing into my eyes. “That stuff does not weigh on my opinion,” I replied as she averted her stare to the floor. Chloe shyly moved some white hair behind her ear and smiled. I put my finger under her chin, returning her gaze to mine. The only place I wanted her eyes were on me—oh, this was escalating too fast. The logical part of my brain was shutting down quickly.
“Thank you,” she said with a smile that cracked a little, and I saw her eyes tear. “I’m glad I met you… I would like to be part of your life—”
I don’t know what came over me. I knew it was a wrong decision that would end in heartache, but my mouth went towards hers and our lips folded together as she grabbed onto the back of my neck, pulling me closer. This didn’t feel forced, which most of my intimate interactions with May were. Instead, it felt good, and one kiss multiplied into more before she was soon on her back.
The kissing became more demanding as our tongues met, and my hand drifted over the nightgown curves feverishly. My eager touch is soon beneath the silk, running over her soft bare skin, exploring. Impatience began to set in as my hand wandered down Chloe's side toward her thighs. It would be dishonest to say I never fantasised about her and the fact it was no longer a dream meant this was only ending one way. Chloe’s hand drifted toward the band of my sweatpants, but she hesitated, tapping my side as I pulled away, holding myself over her. The mixture of embarrassment and arousal on her face just made me return to her lips before she pushed at my chest with both palms. We are both breathing hard for not taking one second to deliver oxygen to our already distracted minds.
“Are we going to do it here?” Chloe asked, putting her hands over her face. Her shyness was endearing.
“Did you want to go to my bed?”
“Um, if you want?” she mumbled into her palms.
“What do you want?”
Chloe opened her fingers, staring at me nervously from in between the gaps. “We’re going to your room to have sex, right?”
I paused, taken aback by her straightforwardness “Yeah, probably.”
She nodded shyly. “Okay, just checking. Cause I definitely want to.”
Unfortunately, there is a knock at the door, putting this on pause. “Shit, get dressed fast,” I said. Then, jumping up to another knock, I rushed over. Whoever it was, they were impatient. I got to the handle and prayed it wasn’t May.
I opened the door to Covic. “Cyrus, my friend, we need to talk,” he said, pushing his way in. He walked into the centre of the room, where a bra and thong sat on the back of the couch. Covic slowly turned his head towards me with a raised eyebrow.
I rubbed the back of my neck, breaking eye contact with him. “Damning, I know, but my purity is intact.”
Covic shook his head at me in disbelief. “Do you get off by turning women down?”
“Yes.”
“Are you serious?” Covic asked.
I shrugged.
Covic put his hand over his mouth, squinting his eyes at me. “I am unsure if you’re joking.”
Chloe walked out in a shirt and jeans. “Hey,” she said, waving, but Chloe stopped abruptly, realising she didn’t put her hat on.
“Hello, we have met. Anyway,” Covic said, not acknowledging the fact she had feline ears. “I yelled at May.”
“Why?” I asked with theatrical confusion.
“She is dumb, very dumb,” Covic said, leaning on the couch’s backboard. “Like they dropped her as a child dumb. This would explain the stutter—”
“Covic…”
“I’m sorry that was uncalled for, but she got me fired up, man,” he said, sighing.
“Should I leave?” Chloe asked, motioning for my attention.
Covic glanced over at me and slightly nodded. “Yes, you can go in my room,” I said as she quickly came over, embarrassed, grabbing her garments.
After Chloe left, Covic looked over at me. “So, May is a little xenophobic,” he said, shaking his head. Little was an understatement.
“And how do you feel about her?” I asked, crossing my arms, and Covic’s eyes dropped to my shoulders.
“First, you have no business being this buff,” Covic said, grabbing my arm and squeezing it. “There is no way you have the time to be this yummy—”
“Please never use the word, yummy, again.” I interrupted him.
“Anyways, good, she’s hella cute,” Covic replied, folding his arms “Mr. Reed, I find all things beautiful, if you know what I mean.”
“So, you’re okay with her?”
Covic patted the couch, motioning me to come over and lean on it with him. “I want you to do what makes you happy.”

“I feel you give that advice to everyone.”
Covic laughed. “I give that answer to people I care about. I would support you if you wanted to fuck a Kairyu.”
We both laughed weakly, staring at each other. There was a long pause before I spoke, “Royal Kairyu women are kind of attractive.”
“Right!” Covic said, hitting me on the arm. “You saw one in the textbook, right?”
I burst out laughing. “I am glad we agree on this. Wasn’t sure if I should say it.”
“Speaking of textbooks,” he said, as his face showed worry. Covic was aware of the date May went on, and we both knew things would be awkward in class.
“I don’t care,” I said, waving my hand in the air as the door was knocked on again.
Edwin didn’t wait for me even to leave the couch as the door opened. He walked in with a folder under his arm and a grin on his face. “The instructors will be here in the next couple of months,” Edwin said, striding over and handing me the green folder. I opened it to discover a stamped citizenship paper, a passport, and an ID. I pulled out a copper card with Chloe’s name on it. “Owning a bank account makes things less odd.”
“Hello, Mister Pierce,” Covic said, and Edwin gave him a slight nod before returning to me.
“I also put one in there with your name. Unfortunately, I can’t have you spending ridiculous amounts of credits in my name,” Edwin said, putting his hand out, “Mine, please.”
I walked over to get my wallet, and gave him the card. “Thanks for doing this.”
Edwin gave a small laugh. “Look at the other paper before saying that.” I glanced down at what looked like a schedule. “I am removing you from May’s classes. We just do not have time for you to play ordinary student anymore. You and The Divinity need to learn and be around each other as much as possible,” Edwin said, keeping quiet for a moment to gather his thoughts. “Meaning… Rachel is going to live in your spare room for a little while,” he finished, and I understood his pause from before. That was a big request. It took him a whole couple of hours to get Chloe’s paperwork—this wasn’t an equal trade.
“Is this a favour?”
“Yes.”
I let out the most prolonged sigh imaginable as we just let Covic hear this entire conversation. Edwin and I had a recurring problem with that, just going off on private topics. But, at this point, I didn’t see a reason to stop; Covic had heard a lot already.
“Okay, but why?”
Edwin cleared his throat. “I need you to make her trust you with her life. I need you to be able to sway her opinions. This was not easy to negotiate with the church. We need her on our side for the future.”
I squinted my eyes at Edwin, tilting my head. “Okay?” I said, not liking what he said about the future.
“I want you to be able to make her disobey the church,” Edwin said, letting something else serious out.
I know I said okay like it was a question, but I had grasped the point. After releasing yet another sigh. “Sensitive subjects are being discussed.”
“Yes, they are.” Covic waved, walking towards the door, “I will let this discussion slip my memory. Later, Cyrus. We’ll finish our conversation later.”
The door closed, and Edwin gave me an intense glare. “You need to make sure she likes you,” Edwin pleaded. “This is one of the biggest things you can do for me. If you succeed here, I will be indebted to you for the rest of my life.”
“I understood the first time.”
“But please, for the love of God, don’t take it too far. Even though your ages are relatively close, it would look wrong on the Archon Domain if you and her in the future—we want to stay away from the accusations of anything inappropriate.”
“Edwin, that is no worry, seriously. You want me to be an older brother. Got it.”
He nodded. “I am not worried,” Edwin said, putting his hands behind his back. “We will break the cycle of all chaos,” he said with confidence.
Everything was coming together, and Edwin was proud. And proud he should be, he had found The Divinity, Darkness and gotten the runic scrolls to trap the Demon Lord, which he was working on translating with my help. I could probably use the tattoos to my advantage. The idea was to activate them by simply gathering anima in the location. This seemed like cheating, but natives don’t have elements.
“The artist is on the way too,” Edwin added, putting his hands in his pockets, “then we can start the inking—I hope taking you out of May’s classes soon does not upset you.”
“No, I have something important to do. Saving people is a higher priority than seeing May.”
Edwin seemed a little taken aback. “I am shocked—but glad.”
“We are going to stop the Demon Lord and this future chaos—but how did you get the church to agree to this?”
“Put simply, I followed my request with the most incomprehensible explanation ever; with a lot of big words and rambling about the tablets. I think the Grand Priestess grew annoyed with me and just agreed,” Edwin said, and I laughed.
Edwin smiled at me before quickly taking the opportunity to grab Chloe, who had barely left my room. His enthusiasm was annoying, especially after the colossal favour he asked. I had actually done him a favour.
He handed her the folder, and Chloe meekly took it. "What is this?" she looked back up at him.
"A new life," Edwin replied, putting his hand out towards the door. "Shall we go to your new apartment?"
"I will stay here"—I sat down on the couch, emotionally drained… again—"I need to study. I've not been going to classes."
Edwin paused. "We are going to talk about that later."
I rolled my eyes. "Yes, Dad.”
