Chapter 2: A dragon, a troll, and a college student walk into a bar, part 2
Something is wrong. Aleri is cheerful, and Darius is not looking at me like I am a piece of gum stuck to his boots. Not that they have gum in Fantasy Land, mind you. Or, toothpaste. I'd kill for toothpaste.
Anyway, we are before the Lich's lair. All of us are decked in the standard adventuring gear. Me? I am a mage, so, I am just in gambeson, and some pants, with the knee caps protected by knee-high boots.
"Let me take point," Aleri says, and then winks at Darius. Which is strange, seeing as mostly he winks at me.
"Sure, make sure no traps get us," Darius told him, and then moved to fall in step with me.
"Don't you think it is nice we have a rogue? I mean, seeing as you are yet to learn quick heal?" Darius whispers in my ear. My knees go weak, and he actually steadies me. He licks his lips, and my mind becomes a pile of mush.
Is my luck finally turning around? Is Darius going to agree to become my lover? Or… wait, is the troll trolling me? He did stay behind, while I walked up to my room.
My eyes narrow, as Darius just shrugs. I suppose that Aleri looks a lot more heroic, while he leads us. I decide to let the game unfold. See what these two managed to cook up, while I was asleep.
Level one: skeletons. Of course, what was I expecting? As I blast a skeleton to kingdom come, I notice that Aleri is shooting a lot more arrows, than usual. Huh, just when did he learn quick shot?
Darius wields his blades made of fire as expertly as always, but my eyes go to the troll, who is shooting the skeletons, before they can reach me.
I mean, what is the gambeson for, but for the time when I get no support? Yet, I feel oddly touched, that he would go to such lengths.
Level two: Undead spiders. So, this Lich is old school. I mean, it is almost like I am playing a game. That is a thought I get all the time, in this world. There are fantasy creatures all around us, and I still think it is one big game.
But, when can I win and go back? And, if I go back, will it be like a ghost? I did die, after all. As we make our way through level three, which is undead goblins, of all things, I see the end of the chamber.
There, in a coffin, is the Lich. Wearing all sort of rotten fabrics, and looking like it can't move.
"Wait, both of you. Let me kill it from here," Aleri says, and Darius places a hand on my chest.
"Just watch, little human," the dragon all but purrs. So, I do so. Aleri shows off an impressive Overdrive shot. He has never been able to do so, before. I looked at Darius, who looked to be… eye-fucking Aleri. Ok, what the heck?
"Confidence is sexy, don't you think so?" Darius asked me, and then walked to the Lich, to finish it off.
Ok, I don't like this. Will the Casanova dragon set his sights on the troll? I mean, why now? The two were a party, long before they found me. So, why now?
Aleri then comes by me, and places a hand behind his neck. He chuckles, and then opens his eyes.

"How did I do?" He asked me, and I breathe a sigh of relief. For him, nothing has changed. But for me… well, Darius has been ignoring me, and doing just about everything that moves, and has more muscle than I. I don't want Aleri to be just another notch in the dragon's belt.
"You did great. Do you want to get some drinks later?" I ask him because I feel the trap around my ankle. In a way, I know it is the sign of an asshole to want someone, only after someone else sees interest in them, but I don't care.
"Sure, I am paying," he told me, and then moves to take point once more. By the time we move to the corridor we came through, Darius is done looting the Lich's phylactery.
"I guess we did good?" Darius says with a shrug. "So, drinks later, huh?"
"Just me and Julius," Aleri says, and I blink at him. "You and I can drink some other time."
"Oh, no. Don't let me be a bother," I said, not wanting for Darius to be mad at me. I guess, I am a true simp.
"What, do you think Aleri will just wait for you for the rest of his life?" Darius finally snaps. "Just because you don't like how tall he is, or his nose?"
"I didn't say that," I tell him, but he storms off. Yet, I have something more urgent on my hands. I look at Aleri, and see that his head is bowed.
"Oh, buddy, don't be sad," I tell him, as I close the distance between us. "I mean, I would love to get drinks with you later. Your nose doesn't bother me in the slightest. And I like tall men."
"Really?" Aleri asked, but didn't lift his head.
"Let me prove it to you," I told him, and then moved to give him a peck on the lips. Hm, his lips taste like gingerbread. I wonder if I were to kiss him…
The next thing I know, I am in his arms, and he is lowering me in his grip. I let him deepen the kiss, and find that he is a rather good kisser.
Many years from that day, when I am old and gray, I would sit with Aleri on our porch, and we would laugh about it.
If the younger me had known that all it would take to find the love of my life, was for a dragon to show interest. And, well, for my guilt to be triggered, then I would have slapped the person saying it.
I guess, I am only human, with human faults. Good thing, that the right person played me.
