Chapter 39: The gift
During King Damian, and King Consort Alek's, five-year anniversary, little Allyn gets them a dragon egg. Now, he is no longer a toddler, and he really wishes to gain a dragon.
And yet, his parents fear for him.
Day 1:
I gifted my folks the dragon egg, and then rushed out. I bet they can get it to hatch. Furthermore, I mean, dad is a dark lord. If there is anyone that could make the egg hatch, then it is Alek.
Damian can place it on a golden silken cushion, or something. He has a knack for ceremonies.
Day 10:
I went to see how the egg is doing. I petted it for a while, and spoke to it. This is different from that sword that I got conned into buying. For one, it holds a great and powerful dragon. For another, it hasn't been stolen yet.
Fingers crossed that the dragon will hatch before my birthday. I want to feed it some cake…
Day 33:
Today, I asked Alek why the egg hasn't hatched yet, and he changed the subject. I narrowed my eyes, and went to ask Damian the same question. He sent me to my room with a book about three little pigs. Something Alek wrote for him.
Simps…
Day 100:
I am beginning to worry that I have been conned. The dragon egg stays on its cushion, and doesn't so much as twitch. Back in the orphanage, at times, mothers who expected children would be permitted to stay. The babies in their bellies kicked like nobody's business. Why is my dragon not kicking?
Day 101:
I gathered my guards, and then stormed out of the castle, and towards the market. The merchant must have conned me. Did she even sell me a real egg, or did she sell me a figurine?
When I get to the market, her stall full of dragon eggs is gone. Well, nobody runs away from me! I vanquished two mythical beasts, and I will vanquish a third!
Day 102:
Dad and Papa won't let me go after the witch. They say I am too little, and will get myself killed. I just nod along, and then go to the adventurer's guild.
I put forward the quest to get the villainous merchant, and pay with dad's credit card. Serves him right.
Day 103:
Ouch. I thought that I am past this indignation, but I was not. Dad spanked the living hell out of me. I can't lay down on a bed, or sit in a chair. Papa Damian is not very compassionate towards me, at this moment.
He has been lecturing me about the value of money for the past two hours. He told me how he grew up in poverty, how he had to enter a competition to get to where he is now.
Yeah, as if I didn't know! He finishes with taking the egg off its cushion, and then handing it to me.
"It is time for you to bury the egg, Allyn. It has been dead from the start," he tells me, his voice stern. I scrunch up my nose at him, and march towards the garden. Not feeling like a second spanking.
Day 104:

I dream that I am flying. High in the sky, on top of a dragon. It is a big red beast. This very morning, I went to the grave I dug for the dragon, and placed a hand on top of the soil.
I don't know whether I am mistaken, or not, but I could swear that I felt a heartbeat.
Day 200:
I spent the night out in the garden. The merchant hasn't been found, and the adventurer's guild gave dad a full refund. I bet Alek is happy about that. I frown. If I had a dragon, he would have taught me how to fight.
I would be a dragon knight, similar to how it happens in his stories. But my dragon won't be dumb, like the ones in his stories. My dragon would be able to talk.
I pat the soil once more, and weed it. Nothing is permitted to take residence over my dragon incubator patch of the garden. Nothing.
Day 201:
I feel a tap on the window, and see, a small lizard on the other side. I jump up and down. The lizard gets scared, and runs off.
Yet, I know where to find it. I go to the garden, and see the dug-up patch. The dragon has hatched, and even managed to reach the surface! What a smart dragon!
"Valeric, come out here. I won't harm you. I bet, we can steal some bacon for you," I urged the dragon. A small head pokes from a rose shrub, and then the little lizard runs up to me. I scoop up the newly named Valeric in my hands, and then rush to the kitchen.
There is this thing which is strange about Valeric. He is white, and not red. I really hoped that he was red. Like in the dreams.
Oh, well.
Day 300:
Valeric is already as big as the castle. Now, both papa and dad remember that he was a gift for them. That makes me wonder if they won't take him away from me.
The dragon is a gorgeous beast, but he can't talk. Still, I love him to bits. Yet, with them dropping hints that he is theirs, and not mine, I feel dread pool into my stomach.
Day 301:
They took him away from me. My baby. My dear and confused dragon. They build him a perch up in the mountains, and left him there. Do they not know that I need to read him a bedtime story, before he goes to sleep? That he likes his pork chops at exactly five in the morning?
Just why did my parents betray me like this? I sobbed into my pillow for the past two hours. Only the threat that they will take my TV as well, made me stand up, and resumed my empty life. I can't believe that it has almost been a year.
Did the merchant know I will be this hurt when she sold me the egg? That my soul will split in two? A part enduring in my meaningless husk, and a part trying to give warmth and love to poor Valeric?
I bet she did. I bet she did it on purpose. But I will grow up, find her, and then feed her to Valeric.
I do so vow.
No matter how King Damian, and King Consort Alek tried to keep their son on the straight and narrow, they simply couldn't account for the fact, that he was a damaged soul.
Perhaps, if they had left the dragon at the castle, none of this would have happened. Yet, they did not. Out of love for their son. And so, Allyn got roped into a grant adventure.
But this is a story for another day…
