On a gloomy Christmas Eve night, a well-known gravedigger named Nate trudged through the cemetery with his shovel slung over his shoulder. The wind howled through the bare trees, sending shivers down his spine.

"Bloody hell, I hate this job," Nate muttered to himself, trying to ignore the eerie feeling that had settled over the graveyard. He had been doing this job for so many years that his fingernails are never clean of dirt.

Rustle!

“Huh?”

Suddenly, he heard a voice from behind a nearby tombstone. "Hey, mate, can you give me a hand over here?"

“Huh!” Nate turned to see a strange man in a long coat and a top hat, holding a lantern in one hand and a shovel in the other. He looked like he had just stepped out of a Victorian horror novel.

"What are you doing here?" Nate asked, warily approaching the man.

"I'm the Christmas Eve Gravedigger, mate," the man said with a grin. "I've got a job to do, just like you."

"But this is my graveyard," Nate protested. "I've been the only gravedigger here for years."

"Not tonight, mate," said the Christmas Eve Gravedigger, his grin turning into a wicked smile. "Tonight, the dead rise, and I'm here to make sure they stay in their graves."

“What the hell are you talking about?” Nate’s eyes widened in fear as the man began to dig up a freshly-filled grave. "What are you doing?" he asked, trying to keep the fear from his voice.

"I'm just doing my job," the Christmas Eve Gravedigger said, as he tossed a rotting corpse onto the ground at Nate’s feet. "Now, are you going to help me, or are you going to be next?"

“Huh!” Nate stared at the corpse in horror, his mind racing with trepidation. He knew he had to get out of there very soon, but he was frozen with terror.

"Well, mate, what's it going to be?" the Christmas Eve Gravedigger asked menacingly, his shovel dripping with mud and filth.

"I-I can't do this," Nate stammered, his voice shaking like silent thunders. "I-I quit."

"Oh, I'm afraid it's not that simple," the Christmas Eve Gravedigger’s eyes were glinting in the darkness. "You see, once you've been chosen, there's no turning back. You're stuck with this job for eternity."

"But I don't want to do this," Nate protested, his fear turning to desperation.

"Too bad, mate," the Christmas Eve Gravedigger said with a cruel laugh. "You made your choice, and now you're mine. Forever."

“No! Please spare me!” Nate tried to run, but it was too late. The Christmas Eve Gravedigger lunged at him, his shovel raised high. The last thing Nate heard was the sound of his own screams echoing through the graveyard as the Christmas Eve Gravedigger claimed another victim.
