Chapter 14: Work enthusiasm

Lu Xin considered seriously, it’s not really reasonable to call the police because of this right?

It’d be even more absurd to use the gun in this situation, he’s not a lunatic.

The only option left is to call Mrs. Chen, but Lu Xin felt reserved. Though she was stern when telling him the precautions, wouldn’t it be a little ridiculous to call your boss because of another job?

He pondered for a while and without any other ideas, he called the only number on the phone.

The call was quickly received and the voice on the other side sounded calm but subtly nervous.

“Uh, sorry Mrs. Chen for calling… But I’m in a sticky situation here.” Lu Xin said in the most polite manner.

“What’s going on?”

Lu Xin heard faint movement over the phone as if everyone around her stopped moving and working.

“So… I’ve been leaving work on time and patrolling around the streets, and my company used that as an excuse to dismiss me.”

Lu Xin who was tensed up by the atmosphere over the phone said.

The other side was still as silent as ever.

After a while, Chen Jing said,

“Patrol?”

“Yeah. To see if there are any sort of psyche creatures wandering about. I didn’t use any of my work to do that but the company still fired me because the chairman wanted to give the job to someone else…”

“So you called me because of that?”

Chen Jing sounded weirdly relieved.

“…Yes.”

Lu Xin answered carefully.

Seemingly having a lot to say, Chen Jing sighed slowly and said,

“Hang on for a bit.”

It will be sorted right? She even told me to wait.

Lu Xin waited patiently downstairs while enjoying his cigarette quietly.

“Can you let me go playing with them like how I would play with my toys?”

His sister asked after appearing out of thin air, crawling around him hastily and distorting her body more than usual. Her hair was hung down covering most of her eyes only to make the seeable part brighter.

“Oh brother, how they dared to bully you. Should we go kill them all? Mom will be delighted to do this for you, I think dad will as well!”

“…”

Coincidentally someone was walking past, so Lu Xin had to pretend that he couldn’t see her and turned his face to look at the legs of a passing woman.

Around a minute passed and Lu Xin suddenly saw the chairman running down from the stairwell, behind him were two flustered figures. The chairman wiped his sweat off earnestly and saw Lu Xin who was smoking by the road, he ran towards him hurriedly and grabbed his hands,

“Oh, Lu why didn’t you tell me earlier?”

Lu Xin didn’t know what the chairman was talking about, so he just let him hold his hands.

“Why didn’t you tell me you knew director Liu in technology from the main city?”

Lu Xin still didn’t know what the words meant, he didn’t know any “director Liu”.

The chairman saw that Lu Xin wasn’t talking so he kept on speaking with a big smile,

“Director Liu just called and he said he liked your work ethic, they even prepared a transportation project for you specifically. The president even called me to keep you! So sorry about the interruptions, hahaha… Come on, let’s go back, I’ll treat you to a meal tonight!”

He still didn’t know what to say, but apparently, his job was kept.

The two young figures behind the chairman stepped forward. One was the daughter of the chairman who wore a pearl shirt and didn’t look too happy. Her eyes are always on the top of her head and she treats everyone in the office with a bossy attitude therefore everyone calls her “princess Qing”. The other one was Lu Cheng who stole his job earlier.

Lu Cheng shook Lu’s hand eagerly with a fake smile,

“Sorry, brother Lu! I really didn’t mean to steal your job…”

“Don’t worry, I understand. In a world like this, it’s only natural that something like this can happen to anyone.”

Lu said and quickly withdrew his hands.

Lu Cheng aggressed further when he saw that Lu Xin wasn’t mad,

“Can I be in this project as well then, brother Lu?

Lu Xin stared at him.

From their behaviour, he could guess that it was a big project that was proposed, and there should be a lot of bonuses if they were a part of it.

So he answered soberly,

“Nope.”

His smile froze in place.

The princess by his side also seemed like she was going to explode, but she didn’t know much about Lu Xin so she could only roll her eyes.

Anyone with any sort of connection with the main city is people you shouldn’t mess with.

After Lu Xin confirmed that he was going to go back to work, the chairman walked back to the workplace tremblingly with the two. Lu Xin’s satellite phone rang the moment they went back, it was the person who sorted his issues.

“Done?”

Lu Xin tapped his head lightly, but realized the person he was talking to was over the phone,

“Yes!”

“Great.”

The silence lasted a while and it was the person on the phone who broke it,

“Do you really need this job if you’re working for us?”

“It didn’t say on the rules that I can’t have another side job…” Lu Xin answered timidly.

Hearing her sigh again over the phone made Lu Xin feel like he was giving her trouble.

“If you’re really that enthusiastic about the job, I have something for you to do.”

She kept the phone on hold and went to talk to someone else,

“Remember how I had one of the technology companies give you a transportation job? Use this opportunity to build a relationship with the boss of the “Quartet” transportation company. Just go and observe and call me if there are any issues.”

Lu Xin was surprised and somewhat happy at the job request.

The director even began to hand out jobs, this is good!

“Why would there be any issues?”

“According to our intelligence, the company had been involved with at least 7 or 8 deaths. I need you to go check whether they were simply murders, or something else.”

“7 or 8 murders?”

Repulsed, Lu Xin asked,

“What if they were murders?”

“If they were just murders, it’s fine. Just withdraw swiftly.”

She stopped for a while and added after the pause, “If it’s something else, report immediately.”

“Wait so it’s fine if it’s murdering?” He knew what she meant, but he couldn’t help but feel a little anxious about the job. He asked after thinking carefully, “Is it dangerous?”

“Depends, the danger will still exist whether it’s a contamination or just a case of murder. But I  would not be worried considering your abilities.”

She continued while smiling, “There will be a reward no matter the result of the investigation.”

Lu Xin accepted the request and went back to his original workplace after all the shenanigans. All his stuff was back in place, including the pennant.

The surrounding people including the lady next to him stole gazes at him one after another, after which they quickly went back to work.

He sat for a while and went to Lu Cheng’s station.

Looking at him panicking, Lu Xin said, “I’ve given it another thought, do you want to help me with this project?”
