Tyler

After I was caught red-handed, Tegan and I went back to grab our things from the cafeteria before heading home. I felt terrible for leaving my omega with the impression of a ram n’ scram; I hadn’t even caught her name. But Tegan had given me that vibe, and I didn’t want to make it more uncomfortable for her. Because if she hadn’t interrupted us, I would have definitely had at her again.

On the couch,

Against the wall…

My sex drive went nuts in that dean’s office, my primal beast making the most out of the opportunity.

It was a quiet bus ride back, the once talkative Tegan being relatively quiet. And just when I was getting her more comfortable around me, too. I had to expect that was awkward for her, having walked in on me like that. And once we made it through the front door, I quickly understood that she was voluntarily giving me the cold shoulder.

Was she upset with me?

Bann was still at work, possibly doing some overtime. Because by the time we walked in, it was already six pm.

That highway traffic was brutal.

While I didn’t mind sitting on the road for a bit, it looked like Tegan did, eager to peel herself away from me. I could tell, she marched down that door and went right to her room. But, what the hell did I have to feel guilty about? Tegan and I weren’t dating. And we weren’t mates. Even if it was obvious she had a thing for me, nothing could happen between us. At least, not right now.

I was also under the idea that alphas could have as many omegas as they wanted. Did she think that she’d be my first? Or had she expected me to wait for her to be of age?

I’d be stupid to continue trying to make sense out of this, ignoring the background noise in my head telling me to apologize for something I shouldn’t feel bad about. If something was scratching at her, it was up to Tegan to approach me about it.

I left the living room for my bedroom as well, so I could get washed up. The smell of sex was still on me, on my skin, on my clothes. I stopped just as I swung my shirt over my head, looking over to the bags of clothes Tegan had brought me sitting on my floor. I went and emptied those bags up, pulling off the stickers and the tags, and tossing each article of clothing on the edge of my bed. Including the clothes I had on, right after I took the note my omega gave me from my back pocket.

I took a shower then started a load of laundry, with nothing but a towel around my waist. Shit, I needed to go back to my apartment to get more of my things, but the Kinterras won’t let me out of their sight.

Down in the kitchen, the smell of dinner lured me to the other side of the island, Tegan still trying her best to avoid me. I wasn’t about to play this little game, taking a seat on the stool, noticing she was wearing something slightly more revealing, while keeping to her goth aesthetics—a fishnet crop top and some curve-hugging leggings.

She gave my chest a passing glance, hiding a blush while she ran cold water in the coriander stuffed with pasta shells.

Still… nothing?

Well then, I guess she wouldn’t mind me pulling out that note my omega gave me and typing those digits on my phone.

“So, she’s going to be your first mate?” Tegan asked me under her breath, her voice so soft, it was almost like she didn’t want me catching her question. I prompted my head up, looking at her as if I had no idea what she was talking about. I gave her that confused stark look, when deep inside, I knew where that question was coming from.

So I chuckled, tucking my phone away, giving her my undivided attention. “I don’t know, I mean… I don’t even know what her name is.”

“Hmph, how very alpha of you. Typical,” she sassed, sticking her nose in the air. “You know, you two were so loud, I could hear you two blocks over,” she said bitterly. “You’re lucky the Lotus pack wasn’t around.”

“Oh, I already ran into them.”

“What?” she said, turning the faucet water off.

“Yeah, it looks like that omega I was with is associated with them.”

“What!” she cried. “And you screwed her? Do you have a deathwish?”

“Well, no, not like that. I mean,” I sighed. “When I told you I had to go to the bathroom, I lied.”

“Oh yeah, I gleaned that,” she said, with her hand to her hip and that sharp glare biting at me.

“I caught her scent, it was so strong. It couldn’t have been a coincidence that I noticed her in my class, in the library, and then again at the cafeteria. She wanted me too, and I was craving her bad. So I went looking for her to satisfy my itch, and that’s when I bumped into Blake.”

“Blake?”

“The same guy who I was fighting last night. But that girl, she was standing in between us. I was hiding behind that wall, because she clashed with him and his betas first. They didn’t pick up on my scent, and I couldn’t pick up on theirs. Maybe I was still developing, or maybe her scent was stronger, I don’t know. But I didn’t complain, because I was in no situation to fight him. Not right now… not yet.”

She dropped down her hostility toward me, that anger turning into worry. “What happened after?”

“He was handling her, saying that she belonged to him. It felt like she’d been brushing him off for a while the way that conversation was going. Luckily for me, he had other business elsewhere and left her in that hallway.”

“And then?”

I grinned. “Well, you know what happened after.”

“Tyler, you know that she’s in trouble now, though, right?”

My smile waned down. “What do you mean?”

“The Lotus alpha had his eyes on her before you did! And you seeded her. Which means that your scent is on her now.”

“Yeah, maybe until she washes up.”

“That’s not how it works. You claimed that omega. She belongs to you now. You can either make her your mate or keep her in your collection of females for breeding. In both those cases, she is in danger because she is part of your pack now. And you already know how the Lotus feels about the Sire Wolves.”

My voice shook. “Tegan…”

“Tyler, it’s your job to protect her now. Her life, and the life of your unborn child is at risk.”

I shot off my seat worried. “She knows the rules better than I do, right? Why the hell would she just give me her number and not explain her situation to me?”

“I’m getting that my dad left out the details of the post breeding process,” she sighed. “I am not sure why she wouldn’t insist on going back with you. Maybe she thinks she can avoid Blake. Or maybe she thinks that you’ll fight him to keep her.”

“What?”

“If two alphas want the same omega, it’s a fight to claim that omega.”

I narrowed my eyes on her. “Why would she expect me to fight that guy?”

“Because you claimed her, Tyler! And he’s after her. Weren’t you listening to a word I just said?”

“Oh, I’m listening, all right, but I’m not understanding.”

“What’s not to understand? You made it clear to me that she’s been getting harassed by that guy. She sees another alpha on campus. She gets that alpha to claim her, and now she has a free cage match between the alpha she hates and the alpha she’s using to beat down the alpha she hates!”

“It’s not like that…”

“How do you know? Do you know for a fact that she wasn’t using you?”

I paused, bringing my head down and musing.

“That makes the most sense to me. And if that’s true, then I wouldn’t mate her. Heck, I wouldn’t even let her inside the pack.”

“That’s cold-hearted…”

“Not if you’re thinking about the well-being of your pack. You don’t want a girl with that selfish mindset around your family.”

“She has good intentions, Tegan. I could… feel it. When we kissed, I…” I stopped, looking up to her to see the subtle regret lingering on her face while she waited for me to admit that the girl loved me. I could tell I was hurting her feelings somehow, so I hit the gas, and made an excuse to head back to my room. “Hey, I need to phone my boss at work. Been missing for a minute. Staff’s probably worried about me.”

“Um, well, okay… sure!”

It was a lousy excuse, because I didn’t give two shits about my job. But I wanted to make sure that my omega was okay. So I pulled out my phone and texted that new nameless contact, already anxious for her to text me back before I even sent the message.

‘Hey, just checking up on you… it’s Tyler.’ I might have come off as a worried nut, but after what Tegan had said, I had my reasons.
