Tyler
Monday night. My adrenaline ran high. I had to shake it off, just like my body had shaken off the abuse from Bann a couple hours ago. By now, I’d gotten used to it, being able to heal without even thinking about it. That feat would come in handy once I crossed Stephan of the Moonlight Wolves, and may give me that edge I desperately needed. As for the game plan? It was very vague, and I’d like to keep it that way. There was no point in staging a damn thing when we had no idea what to expect. Alice had mentioned being at the club twice, so I had a sloppy layout of the warehouse in my head. And even then, that was hard to work with without knowing how many bodies would be in there—neutral, friendly or otherwise.
Why give ourselves a headache strategizing? It would only stress us all out if our expectations backfired. So I washed up, got dressed, and slapped on some cologne to mask my scent. I wore something clean without being too loud—a black fitted turtleneck thermal with some matching jogger harem pants. The outfit didn’t exactly scream gothic threads, maybe more streetwise compatible than anything, really. But it was black, and I wanted to blend in.
I planned to catch Bann before heading out, leaving the girls upstairs to go fish for him down the first floor. He had his bedroom door wide open, so I knew he wasn’t on the second floor, and by the looks of it, he wasn’t on the first floor either. “Bann?” I called out, searching all over the place for him, before I went to the den, noticing the sliding door blinds partly open.
And out on the patio, my hard-bitten uncle Bann, sitting on the bench smoking his cigarette.
I snapped the door back, welcoming myself in, before shutting the cool air out again. He didn’t bother turning his head to me, engrossed in his fumes, looking at the details of his sculpted backyard. He seemed unbothered, closed off, but the air around him wasn’t as tense as I’d expected it to be. After our fight, I’d thought my uncle would be less relaxed, a bit more hostile being around me. Not to say this unsettling silence wasn’t putting me off though, my ass taking to the floor so I could formally address him.
“Hey.”
“Hey.”
Heh, yeah, pretty straight forward. I had to impose anyway I looked at it, opening the floor with a straightforward apology. “Sorry things got a bit ugly.”
“As most fights do, lad.”
“You didn’t think I’d hit you, huh?”
“You got lucky, mate.”
I chuckled. “All right, I’ll take that.” Amusing how he said that with a straight face, too. “I’m not sure if Tegan told you but, we are heading out tonight.”
He finally turned to look at me, pulling his cigarette from his lips. “Out where?”
“Van Pier.”
He huffed, that renowned cynical grin stretching out on his face. “I take it that fight really got your juices flowin’, yeah?”
“Actually, it was Tegan’s idea to kick her birthday outing to the curb so we can go after this guy.”
“And what does Tyler think?”
Was a bit strange that he addressed me in third person, but I could tell my uncle was unsure about the early side quest, in contrast to the vibes he was giving me last night. Regardless, it was an appropriate question, where I was eager to give him an appropriate answer. “I’ve never planned on killing someone before…” I said, turning my head down, looking at my nervous thumbs fiddling over my folded hands. “When you’re raised with a certain set of mortals and ethics, it’s hard to steer away from that. You know, twenty years of being human. Heh, even that’s not easy, you know? And then, one night, you have an entire new set of principles to abide by. Almost like, dressing myself in a different persona. I mean, I remember what you said. That it’s all about survival. These packs, these shifters, out here to take everyone you know and love. It’s a turf war, it’s a dominance race. It’s a… werewolf thing. I feel like I have to relearn being me again.”
“No, just a better version of you, mate. Don’t get me wrong, I get what you’re going through. It was a hard choice for your father to make, but Madelyn was adamant about raising you normally. Even though your father made it clear that he was against it. You were too young, sheltered all your life to even know any different. He had a plan to homeschool you and keep you protected. Trust me, Tyler, your mother was willing to do everything it took to keep you out of the pack. She’d heard too many tales. And shit, I’ve seen too many things. I’d never hold it against her, but her choice years ago led to this moment today. Either way you slice it, you were bound to find out the hard way.”
“I’m actually glad she chose the human path. It allowed me to live away from the common threat.”
“Temporarily of course.” He smiled.
I snickered. “Right, because once my uncle found me, it was game over as far as escaping threats was concerned,” I jested, Bann taking it lightheartedly. “Speaking of threats, you’ve never told me what your Hengi was.”
“It should be obvious, shouldn’t it?” he said frankly. “How else can I walk around without being detected?”
“You mean you can mask your scent?”
“Aye. Helps me keep my nose down and outta’ trouble. I’m glad I had reached that point in my alpha career. Made it easy for me to blend in with humans. And it’s a good thing too, because when I was dethroned, I wasn’t allowed to touch my brother’s omegas.”
“Wait a minute—”
“Heh, don’t worry. Your mother Madelyn was never mine. She was a more recent addition to the pack.”
My eyes saddened thinking about how hard it must have been for his own brother to snatch up his wives. “I’m sorry about that, Bann.”
“Why be sorry? It’s how the shifter world works. To you, it may seem selfish or ludicrous, but to us, it’s the lifestyle. And my former mates found a better leader out of it. So, how could I stay upset with your father?” What he was saying didn’t match up with his tone, feeling like Bann was putting on a show for me. Regardless of tradition, he was still entitled to his human emotions, Bann quickly trying to hide that dark look on his face before he changed the topic.
“Oiy, speakin’ of which,” he said, reaching over the back of his collar with his good hand. He unclasped a necklace, a Cuban link chain from his shoulder, passing it over to me. “Ali gave it to me, so I could eventually give it to you when the time came. Why he had me hold it for him is a different story.”
I took his offer, the expression on my face both stunned and grateful.
“Five mm, not too bold, not too flashy. Sterling silver, made to last. Top grade. Don’t worry mate, it won’t kill ya.’” He chuckled, probably noticing the skeptical look plastered on my face as I hesitatingly wrapped it over my shoulder.
“Thanks for this, Bann.”
“I kept it with me, close to heart. I expect you to do the same thing, Tyler. Something to remember your old man by, yeah?” He got up, prompting me to do the same. My uncle gave me a full hug, a dose of medicine I had no idea I needed. It was the last hug I wanted from my father but never got, the reassurance that everything was going to be okay. I had to stop myself from being too invested in these buried emotions of my past, Bann reminding me of Dad in more ways than I was willing to admit. “I’m proud of you, son. Stay safe out there. You have a big job tonight,” he reminded me, pulling away to look at me head on. “Keep your eyes wide open, keep your girls protected, and make the kill.”

Words of wisdom from a seasoned werewolf. I could tell when he talked that he had a few experiences under his belt, both good and bad. There was no question in my mind that my uncle knew what he was talking about, the advice being spot on without me having to even second guess myself. And the fact that he was proud of me was a confidence booster.
This mission wasn’t a simulation or training—this mission was real, as real as it could get.
I went back inside, through the den and to the kitchen after he’d mention taking a walk. There, I saw the two girls coming down the stairs just as I came in, both of them looking as stunning as ever. Alice contrasted Tegan and I, dressed in this blue spaghetti strapped fairy mini dress with an underbust corset. While Tegan stayed true to her gothic apparel, wearing a chained latex black halter crop top over leather shorts in fishnets.
I would never get tired of seeing her in fishnets…
“Are you sure you’re not cold wearing only that?” I said, the question directed to the both of them.
“I embrace the chilling evening autumn air,” Tegan said, falling into this eerie poetic character. “It brings life down these goosebumps blooming in my skin.”
“All right. Settle down, Shakespeare,” I teased.
“Aww! I feel left out!” Alice chimed. “The both of you are wearing dark colors! I’m gonna stick out like a sore thumb!” She pouted. “But I don’t have any darker clothes. Oh!” she said, turning to Tegan. “Tegan, can I borrow some of yours?”
“I’d like to but, if it isn’t obvious, my clothes may run a bit tight on you. Especially in the, ehem, bust area…”
“It’s all right, babe. You don’t have to dress like us to go out. Besides, the blue that you’re wearing is already on the dark side.” I walked up to her and gave her a gentle kiss. “Just go get a light jacket.” I smiled.
“Okay!” she beamed, then dashed back up the stairs.
“You look great tonight. The both of you, really,” I complimented, turning my gawking eyes over to Tegan.
“I look good every night,” she countered cheekily.
“Heh, yeah, you’re right. Good enough to eat,” I growled playfully, scooping her up by the waist. I caught her off guard, but it didn’t take long for that face of hers to shift from startled to awfully tempted, my metal omega caressing my face before she pressed her lips gently into mine. “It’s a shame,” I purred, “that I won’t get you all to myself tonight.”
“You’re being mighty greedy today, Tyler. You had me all to yourself this morning,” she reminded me. “Besides, the night is still young. We’ll get some alone time after, remember?”
“Mmm, but I can’t wait. I want you now…”
“Hey! No starting the fun without me!” Alice said playfully as she went back down the stairs, Tegan turning to her flushed.
“He’s the one who pounced on me!” she cried defensively, getting a chuckle out of me.
“How are we planning on heading out?” I asked.
“In style! Let’s take my car!” Alice suggested.
I nodded. “That’s fine. I’ll drive us there.”
“I call—”
“Shotgun!” Alice blurted, interjecting Tegan.
Tegan slumped her shoulders defeatedly. “Fine, but when we are heading back, I’m sitting in the front!”
“Fair play!” Alice said, before my hip started to vibrate.
I pulled out my cellphone, taking a few steps away from the girls to answer it. That same unknown number was calling me. This had to have been the third time by now. I caved in, shooting a ‘hello,’ to where the sending end immediately terminated the call and hung up.
Odd…
I didn’t linger on it any longer than I should, turning back to the girls, where Alice happily handed me her keys.
